For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

It's actually a pretty good MG for a beginner, I feel. One of the RGM-79C kits makes a pretty easy one also.

I think the most fun MG I've built is the GM Sniper. It's really well articulated, comes with some okay accessories, and is ripe for customizing.

Can a noob get some help please?

I'm trying to spray a topcoat on my model, but it's too thick and won't spray properly. I don't want to dilute it because it's meant as protection.

Do I need a different sized needle for this?

I'm using an Iwata Eclipse with 18 psi.

What topcoat and are you not thinning at all? Most topcoats made for airbrushing like mr.color, tamiya, vallejo, etc are made to be thinned before spraying.
>>
>>15766412
Vallejo polyurethane varnish. Before the label was ruined in a spill I distinctly remember it reading that it could be airbrushed directly without diluting.
>>
>>15766388
You dilute to make it thinner and spray lighter, you don't want it thick but don't want it thin, what gives?
>>
>>15766437
Acrylic isn't the most durable of paint and is prone to damage. So I would like to avoid diluting it with thinner if at all possible for the strongest possible coat.

I'm just asking if someone with more experience knows if a different sized needle will help with flow problems when spraying a thicker liquid.

>>15766424
Thin it like you would paint, or at least add a few drops of water. You really do need to thin that stuff but it can look great when finished.

Make sure to let the parts sit for like 3 days minimum if not 5-7 though, even if its dry to the touch. You want that stuff fully cured but its reasonably durable in the end. I use mr.color nowadays for topcoat but vallejo used to be my go to before I got into lacquers.
>>
>>15766449
You can control how much you thin it so it flows but doesn't coat too thin. Thinning is all about finding a ratio that suits your needs.

Is it less popular than I think? It always seems to get a lot of people voicing their love for it.
Or maybe we're just a vocal minority since the only kits for it are the sad high grade and various expensive, unavailable and inaccurate third party kits
>>

It's huge and complicated. I'm sure it's been planned for release for a while, they're just trying to make it work with all of the features expected of MG/RG kits.

I'm pretty sure they gave up on making it a master grade. Although since it seems like their engineers are always stepping up their game, maybe they started working on it again. an air compressor. You could also buy air cans, its cheaper if you just want to try it out, but the cost will add up.
>>
>>15766994
>What do I need besides the airbrush and paint?
a compressor might help. And a spray booth
>Paint thinner? Airbrush cleaner?
Airbrush set ups are very expensive. If you need to ask whether or not you need thinner it might be a waste of money for you.
>What brand of paint should I buy?
paint is generally paint, just don't get cheap crap, and you're better off buying a suite of general colors and mixing to match your needs rather than buying super expensive model paints that are pre-mixed to very specific shades
>What type of thinner?
The type intended for the type of paint you have, thinner is just chemical solvents, there is no difference between brands
>How do I know I'm getting the exact shade I want?
spray on some spare plastic (that has been primed the same way as what you intend to paint) and if it's not right, mix other colors in. You're rarely going to get exact shades out of the bottle, you have to mix and experiment

Howdy folks, /awg/ from /tg/ here. I've been pondering making a new modern styled 1/144 Gunpla wargame. Decided to put together a trial rule set and wanted some feedback on it. This is literally "we're brain storming right now" tier rules. Wouldn't mind some feedback since you guys are the people who would be playing it.

There will be co op on the way. Want to make it so builders have a reason to get their gunpla off the shelf even if they have no friends to play with.

https://pastebin.com/QexevFye
>>
>>15767034
I've been wanting to do this, my army is ~1/3 complete.
>>
>>15767065
To play a Gundam wargame?

There's a couple of rule sets out there but they're pretty old now. I wanted to do a more modern one where the base rules are simple but the models are complex.

Once I get rolling there will be army bonuses like if you take the white base crew the Gundam will become more accurate to represent Amuro piloting it.
>>
>>15767034
I think you should come up with a general equipment list and provide stats and points costs, and let people apply those to their models, rather than even trying at the impossible task of statting every mobile suit individually. Not only would the latter approach be simply doomed to failure, no offense, the former allows for customized kits and kitbashes to be played. Also, AP is a fine enough system, but you should either make it a fixed value or have some other rules for generating it, because then you have things like, say, grandpa gundam being just as mobile as the 00 gundam because they're both close combat mobile suits. Different movement speeds - based on frames and equipment - would be great. Also pilot stats/skills since newtypes are a big thing.
But all of that is speaking in terms of expanding it going forward. In its current limited scope, the only things I would say are wrong with it are the lack of any differences in survivability and ability to evade fire.
>>
>>15767003
For a first airbrush, I'm buying the cheap dual-action brush/compressor combo on Amazon.

>>15767009
>If you need to ask whether or not you need thinner it might be a waste of money for you.
I have plenty of money, don't worry about that. I was wondering because I thinned paints with water when I (attempted) painting 40k minis.
>paint is generally paint, just don't get cheap crap
Would Games Workshop paint work? I have quite a bit of that shit left over.
>>
>>15767099
>thinned paints with water
Depends on the setting-er, paint.

>Would Games Workshop paint work?
I can be sprayed, but it has terrible durability, so I wouldn't recommend it. Also you will end up using 2-3 pots worth of paint on a single HG, so you might not have enough.
>>
>>15767111
An OP guide told me to, I swear!
>>
>>15767099
With paints go with Valejo. They're pretty good.Auto air color can work too. And research your paints as to how to thin them. Water is mainly kinda a shit way to thin paints.
>>
>>15767034
Too tired to think clearly right now, but off the top of my head, I would do more to differentiate the suits. Different movement rates, armor, evasion, ect. Part of what made the Gundam, The Gundam, was that it could turn faster and out accelerate Zakus by a wide margin. If you were going for a more Build Fighters approach, then you could use a point build system similar to GURPS for customization, or Mekton Zeta if you're one of those GURPS fearin' anons.
>>
>>15767087
>Once I get rolling there will be army bonuses like if you take the white base crew the Gundam will become more accurate to represent Amuro piloting it.
That might be a bit tricky to do, since there's clear distinctions between early OYW Amuro and post-Black Tristars+Newtype awakening Amuro. Also, with aces in general you're going to run into a lot of powerlevel wankery, ESPECIALLY since you're allowing AU aces (Can Paptimus beat Haman? Would Yazan be able to VIOLATE Aida?).

I notice the feet and legs are unchanged, I think would be the hardest parts to remake. The legs have 3 dimensions of curve, and the feet need basically a total remodel if you change the leg armor proportions.

I've been doing middle removal to thin the kit, and it surprises me the kit you posted didn't go that way. Even more surprising when considering he remade the rocking portion below the main chest piece. I thinned out the chest piece and head and they turned out nice, but I'm not sure if I want to fully commit to the project.

Might want to do some videogame logos, since some HGUC suits (like the Striker) originated from there. Have you done an AoZ logo yet?
>>
>>15767098
Did you check the Dom's profile? It has a high mobility AP that it must use to move. I can do similar things with 00.

Evading VS armour is a difficult problem to fix. I don't want it to become 40k with to hit rolls, then armour rolls. I can always represent good armour by denying an opponent a dice or more. That way vulcans simply can't hurt a tanky MS ever, but a bazooka will still have 1 shot to hit it. I think it's a different enough mechanic and while a fast MS can still be taken down by a lucky shot a tanky MS simply can't be no matter how well you place the shot.

Newtypes will have to come at the squad level. They're very hard to really stat because Newtypes are so poorly defined.

>>15767142
As much as I enjoy customisation I'm not trying to write a custom MS rule set. I want this to be playable without autism and having to reference things constantly. Once you learn your MS's weapons and abilities that's it done. I don't want someone deathscythe 00 Quanta custom needing 6 different stat sheets. My idea is you could just grab models off your shelf, put them on the table and then you can immediately play. That's why MS carry all weapons G Gen style.

>>15767150
Aces will get a bonus to them or their crew mates rather than a power level wankfest. Yazan will have better melee (maybe bonus AP for melee attacks), Amuro is more accurate, Char is harder to hit. Take the 1 defining ace power and that's what they get.

Thank you for the feedback guys.

>>
>>15767192
> I'm not trying to write a custom MS rule set.
Which is also good. I'd rather have a wargame then Build Fighters honestly.

One way armor can work is a simple penalty to your damage roll. Another is for armor to negate a number of successes per attack. Say if you roll 3 successes, armor 2 will negate 2 of them.
>>
>>15767192
>To hit rolls on profiles as displayed as (2/3) with the number of hits needed followed by the number of dice rolled. Your target number will change depending on modifiers.

Maybe its because I'm tired, but I can't for the life of me figure out what this means.
>>
>>15767204
I'm torn between removing dice and just negating a roll. My instinct says to just remove dice, it's a "feels good" armour effect to me. It would also allow for a critical roll of all 6s still hurting.

>>15767223
As should be Are. (2/3) means you need 2 successes and you roll 3 dice.
>>
>>15767239
Ah, so when making your attack you roll three dice and if two or more equal/exceed the target number then the attack hits, yes?

I hate to shill, but one of the variant rules in GURPS could help. Armor values are converted to dice. One die of armor will completely negate one die of damage. In your case, a 6 would always penetrate, regardless off armor.
>>
>>15767260
Yep.

That might get a bit weird with the parry mechanic. The defender would be rolling more dice than the attacker. I like the idea of removing the dice best, I think I'm going to go with that as a unit ability.

Costs Bandai less to make while they can charge more because it's "premium," so it minimizes their costs while maximizing their profits, and their bottom line grows and their investors' pockets get fatter while the hobby grows more and more expensive and inaccessible.

Seriously, who the fuck came up with the concept of painting everything anyways? It's ridiculously expensive and easily the most elitist thing you can do to a hobby.
$100 at least for an Airbrush, another $100 at least for a compressor.
Then you need to buy a $30 Respirator and $15 replacement cartridges.
Alright, now you're ready to paint. Well, you're not because you need to set up a paint booth (at least $50 to deal with the hassle of DIY, more if you want an easier to handle product)
Alright. You're finally ready to paint. Wait, you need masking tape. That's another $5.
Okay. You need paint. That's another $5-10 PER COLOR and will only last you so long. But you're not done yet, you also need thinner. That's another $5. And primer. That's another $10. Don't forget the various clear and top coats. Probably a good $20 for all of the coats you need.
So you're looking at $400 give or take, but I'm probably forgetting a whole bunch of shit that you'll remind me is VITAL to painting, so by the time you're ready to start painting your $15 plastic kit you've spent $500.
>>
>>15768338
you know your kits will still look great with some panel lining, dry brush edge highlighting, and some flat coat from a spray can, right?
nobody's holding a gun to your head and telling you to airbrush paint every model. Especially if you're not giving them custom color schemes. Painting the parts the color they already are is pure autism if you ask me.

If you snapbuild everything you're building the kits themselves way quicker and spending more money on that instead.

>>15768312
They do try to sell paints that are pre thinned, vallejo air and minitaire paints are both designed like this. And they still need a bit more thinning to airbrush nicely.

>>

The thing about technology is that it gets cheaper over time. It might not be reasonable now, but there'll be a point in time where it's reasonably affordable to produce kits with perfect 1:1 color separation and accuracy.
>>
>>15768366
painting will never be obsolete because a good paintjob is multiple layers that all work together to fool the eye about scale. while you can do multiple colors on a part, you'll never get many super precisely placed, negligibly thin layers on the surface.

go to an IPMS show at least once in your life to see what proper scale model paint jobs are like. it is art, developed by honing your skill over years and years. if that's not your thing then simply go do your own thing instead of bitching at others about your own inadequacies.

I got a 20 dollar craft airbrush for kids at a local hobby/craft store, it came with propellant cans and an entire set of paints (14 colors). It is acrylic so you don't need a paint booth, I cut a piece of cardboard box and do it right outside my back door on the concrete.

There are starting points with airbrushing just like every other hobby where you can trade quality of tools/paints for accessibility so you can learn. The very nature of an airbrush lets even a shitty airbrush throw down a very fine thin coat.

I'd be willing to bet that the only people who could tell my paints weren't done with a better airbrush/paints were the handful here who actually paint and do it at a high end. Meaning 90% of the world looks at it like you do.

Been painting kits with it for a few months, and in that time with the money I've saved I bough a respectable airbrush (neo iwata) from the same craft store with a 40% off coupon on the internet, next month I'm buying a nice compressor. I'll still spray acrylic though for now, but i'm experimenting with cheapo enamels for washes and color separation.

Most of your attitude is your own internal negativity keeping you back, and your ego confronting it to protect you by attacking the people you dislike because they are doing what you are not.

They could be easily mistaken for a 2005 kit with quality and color separation stickers. Looking at the revive RX it is clear that even on the lowest, cheapest off the shelf kits they can now put out great quality.

I caved in and bought the RG unicorn even though I'm only interested in the unicorn mode.

Not sure if I'll paint it or not though, I generally never paint kits in their original colors but on the other hand the white fits it.

Can't really speak to the God, but the only real points the colour separation was dodgy on the Shining were the calf plates and shoulders being all red with blue and gold stickers, and the chest vulcans being blue with no sticker at all (should've been cast as one piece with the yellow chest vents in my opinion). Frankly, given the sheer amount of extras that come with it (pop-out core lander, alternate head, alternate clear hands, 3 beam swords and a huge shining finger hand) and the fact they incorporated the super mode transformation into it really well, saying it's an '05-tier kit just for those few bits of weak colouring seems a bit like taking the piss.
>>
>>15768671
>Doesn't even have (best) Unicorn Mode
Why would I want that?

Help me Anons. I just made my first gunpla ever, RG Strike Freedom (cuz it was on sale) and loved it but now I am worried that HG models will feel low quality to me. How bad is the downgrade from RG to HG? I live in a fucking rural country and importing models costs a lot making not on sale RGs pretty expensive.
>>
>>15768696
not much, in terms of quality. Just parts.

So basically, if you want the same feel of a RG, get Master Grades. That's essentially what RG are. Master Grades in High Grade scale
>>
>>15768685
But I've built kits from 1998 that come with cool gimmicks like that. Not at least molding the super mode parts in yellow underneath, the big ass stickers for his ankles, calves, shoulders, skirt, etc, the giant hand is ok, but doesn't really look too good. I can respect others may like it and included as a gimmick but for me the super mode parts make the difference. Things I like on him are how well balanced he is, his great leg movement, the movable forearm armor, the replacement face shining finger parts, and the actual shining fingers color/plastic is imagination-inspiring. Having built all the kits I have though I'm a little disappointed to see random garbage suits I know aren't popular get better features, accessories, and quality than it since it's an MC suit.
>>
>>15768685
I wouldn't call the color separation on the calves/shoulders dodgy, I'd call it outright janky or ghetto.

Put cement between the pieces. Squish together with clamps or rubberbands. Remove them after about 30 min and use the hobby knife to scrape the edge and take out the runoff. After a few hours sand gently until it's flush.

If you're doing it right after you apply cement it should ooze out when you squish them together. This is what fills the seam. You scrape stuff off before it's done curing because if it hardens on there it could cause new stress marks when removed and just makes for more work otherwise.

If you don't wait until it's fairly far into or done curing before sanding, the softened plastic will get smeared around, gunk up your file/sandpaper,etc.

All in all it's super simple but I'm trying to save you the common and easy to avoid mistakes.

Left is before, right is after seam removal.

You just have to resize the image. A few seconds in ms paint. If you're brush painting I suggest thinning your paint and building it up in multiple layers rather than all at once. You might not get an airbrush finish, but you'll have a nice even coat. Any kind of weathering and topcoating can dull the brush marks down. Modelmaking Guru on youtube has a great build series on just doing brush painting.
