I enjoy reading about the setting. I just wish the art direction was handled better.

cartoon was pretty awesome (first experience with battletech), learned about the tabletop and VR system much later.
mechcommander's was pretty good (never played 2 though).
>>
>>15759641

won't that make battletech even more "generic" by comparison?

How so? Its pretty silly to have arms and hands, and then not use them.

I like it a lot, but the tabletop really looks way too complicated. Megamek is a god send. The setting is interesting, if sometimes goofy or absurd.

It makes me sad the creators of Battletech and Studio Nue worked together for the Japanese release of the game, but in the states everything is fraught with legal shit due to Harmony Gold.
>>
>>15759701
>>15759694
Tabletop game has rules for those, if the players want them. They're also used a lot in the fluff for non-combat purposes, like looting supplies.

Also for using your opponent's discarded arm to beat his head in.
>>
>>15759570
Fun wargame, the plot is still broken due to Dark Age, CGL are comedically inept at everything.

>>15759570
Fun but horribly written universe handled by an absolute freak circus of a company which went under and was replaced with yet another freak circus of similar or even greater proportions.
>>
>>15759641
They do use them. In the tabletop you can punch and kick other 'Mechs, grapple, haul post-battle prize wreckage, and do shit like pick up a tree or blown-off limb and club another 'Mech over the head with it. There are also dedicated 'Mech melee weapons like hatchets that are designed to be used in melee combat.

The problem is that melee combat has been impractical in the games due to coding limitations (read: the programmers were too shit to actually be able to program melee combat). But the new BattleTech game by HBS is going to change that.
>>
>>15759714
It's not complicated. You just keep rolling on the tables for a while.

They may do a pretty shit job at running a company in general, but the way they handled the Jihad ultimately turned out really well in the end (especially considering the pushback that the whole affair had initially received when it was first introduced), and the Interstellar Players books are some of the best BT sourcebooks written since the 80's. I have my issues with CGL but it's just not fair to say that they haven't done ANYTHING worthwhile.
>>
>>15760102
The problem is that none of the novels or games depict this

>The problem is that melee combat has been impractical in the games due to coding limitations

Mechwarrior games have always been a discount tank arcade game. They weren't about modelling the setting, just continuing the genre along with whatever works as standard tank arcades (which were oh so popular in actual arcades) fell out of fashion by then.
>>
>>15760109
The games barely depict the tabletop at all, so that's not a complaint and the novels are all crap. Wolves on the Border and the Jade Falcon Trilogy, those are the four good BT novels.

You're both wrong. The only good book is Far Country.
>>
>>15760109
The tabletop game has rules for that, too. They're optional though, since it just adds another level of complexity. For example, you have to design a weapon made specifically to be handled in that fashion since it's disconnected from the 'mech and can't utilize the internal ammo storage, heat sinks, etc.
There's also rules for having the cockpit in the center torso instead of the head, etc. with their own advantages & disadvantages.

Who cares about the novels or the vidyagaems. Also this: >>15760110

I love battletech/mechwarrior but HATE the fanbase. Most of the fanbase is 40-50+ year old farts with old man money to burn and no common sense. They are part of the reason why the series is so dead.

Also Mechwarrior:Online sucks a bag of dicks. Its a fucking terrible game run by an awful company. And now the same guys are making Mechwarrior 5, and just re-using all the same 3D models in it that they made for Mechwarrior Online. Alot of the models in MWO are fucking awful. Like abysmally bad. They fucked up so many classic designs its not even funny.

There are new ones being made but they're all reserved for superior Nihonjin and shit.

Steel Chronicle pods.

Virtually none of these are commercially sold so we're shit out of fucking luck even if you do own the VR headset and HOTAS that all of these require by default.
Likewise, there's a massive amount of people trying all sorts of things with marrying giant robot cockpits and VR because it's a match made in heaven. However, these are Japanese were talking about. Gaijin like us only ever use VR to create simulation of shitting around Paris as a bird, or to make crappy Youtuber videos.

Why would you carry a clunky projectile weapon in your 'Mech's hands that adds yet another variable to accurately hitting your target, when you could instead just point your arm, torso or even head at your target and fire?
>>
>>15761203
I could see it being used for on the fly loadout changes, but Omni-pods and the whole concept of weight in the game really limits that.

I tried to play MechWarrior Online today.

Is it just me or is the game really... bad?
>>
>>15766678
It's not just you.
>>
>>15759647
Sadly, that is quite true. There's a lot of very vocal people that want things the way they've always been, even if the original idea is impractical.

For example, there are people currently on the MWO board asking for ranged weapon hardpoints on the legs for some mechs because the original layouts in had them.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of this guy that ran the computer room at this day camp I went to showing me Battletech and introducing me to mecha, tabletop and PC gaming at 10 years old. Saying up money for a joystick to play Mechwarrior 3 and TIE Fighter showed me the value of hustling actually.

Thanks computer room guy.

Where should I start to get into the Battletech novels?

>My biggest pet peeve is mechs that have hands, but don't use them.
All mechs that have hands use them in Battletech, it's just in the shitty video games that they don't.

There's a weird disconnect between the MW games and the tabletop source material.

MW game fans think that Btech is nothing but tanky, clunky, massive plodding machines that run at a snail's pace and can only "jump" with the aid of thrusters.

In the actual Battletech setting, melee and melee weapons are a thing, handheld weapons exist, mechs can jump unaided, and pretty much everything not a heavy or assault class mech moves like a fucking Gundam.

Actual Battletech is anime as fuck, it's only the gamefags and plebs who think otherwise.

>All mechs that have hands use them in Battletech, it's just in the shitty video games that they don't.
>There's a weird disconnect between the MW games and the tabletop source material.

You're forgetting the part where the expanded rules of the setting also try their hardest to remove this because reasons.

Like, they propagate with the fact you can shoot off a mech's hand and then beat him to death with it. Or pull out a tree.
Then they make official rules that say these hands are unusable as fuck and no mech in existence could hope to pick up a tree, let alone such a thing as an arm.

As mentioned a few times already in this thread, the setting is simply handled by a bunch of drooling idiots.

U wot m8
The 'expanded rules' (TacOps?) have all sorts of dumb luchador shit you can pull with melee. Intentional falls onto other mechs, grapples, moving prone, dragging mechs, uh... chain whips to tangle other battlemechs, sniktbub rules, I dunno, I can't remember anything else without actually pulling up the .pdf.
