I enjoyed 7, Zero and Frontier, Plus is okay, II is forgettable but inoffensive and Delta is the only one I'd say is outright bad personally; though Delta probably has the best first episode of any of the sequels. Still, SDF is the best to me and none of them ever surpassed it.

Frontier is great, easily the most likeable cast. 7 Is fun too despite it's flaws.

Frontier is good, I actually think its one of the best. Because, good soundtrack, good visuals, nice song, good female lead (sherly), loads of connectivity between the previous series. Yet the plot does leave something to be desired its still enjoyable. A lot of really good scenes. It has some weak points but it does a lot things well.

I'd say Frontier comes closest to capturing the greatness of the original, though even it's a ways off.
The other sequels are all pretty lacking.

The original is among the worst of them all.
The animatiom is puke inducing, the songs are all crappy, Minmei a shit, the arc in post-colonization with the rebeling Zentradi is horrible and easily seen for the cashgrab tack-on that it is.

It is not unwatchable, but Macross has come a long way since then and improved a great lot.

Length really was 7's greatest enemy. Nowhere near enough story to warrant almost 50 episodes. Loved the over the top premise but novelty fades after ten episodes and plot never really takes off.

II has some good bits mainly in its visual designs but the plot is forgettable.

Zero is kind of dumb.

7 would be more endearing if it were maybe half as long.

Frontier was mediocre but I liked it, Delta I couldn't even finish.

The original show was definitely the high-point of the franchise. That doesn't make some of the others not worth watching though.

They're all good after the original :^)

It's just that Plus was the best of the best, with 7 being the second best.

When you look at it from any other angle in fighter mode, it turns into a complete mess.
Battroid is alright though, looks like a sleeker VF-1.

ive never seen macross and im curious to give it a shot. since i saw that shit meme mashing up september with some idolshit from delta, i looked up a bit it and i thought it was fucking retarded having idols sing to get rid of aliens, but then upon trying to find out more about the series (i.e looked it up on wikipedia) i found out that the entire series has idols and playing music to aliens in it. how prominent is music-related shit in macross?

Its use is pretty clever in the original show, basically as a psychological weapon. It's not just music but all manner of cultural concepts that the Zentraedi don't know how to react to.

And then Japan being Japan instead of trying to do something different they double down on the idol shit in later installments though Macross Plus does something interesting with it.

i haven't seen delta but i have enjoyed the rest of the series to varying degrees, save for zero

I just hate how it has 4 engines and vertical stabilizers placed in the center of the airframe. The appeal of VF's for me is the jet fighter aspect, and the VF-2 just isn't airplane-y enough for me.
I also dislike the YF-29 and YF-27 for this reason, they're just way too busy for their own good.
