I think it's worse personally, mostly because I hate the "destined lovers" bit it inserts where Sheryl and Alto meet as kids and Sheryl falls for him. I think the TV animation already set up a good dynamic between the two of them to explain why they fell for each other, with Sheryl falling for Alto because he's not overwhelmed by the glamour of her fame, while he falls for her because she basically forces him to open up by her extroverted nature and forwardness (something that also forced Ranka to stop being so shy). There's some cool scenes in the movies, but I prefer the TV animation overall.

I'd say they made it less ridiculous personally. In the first episode Walkure are active participants on the battlefield, hopping around saving lives and getting up close with the enemy while directing drones and jumping atop the VFs. After the first episode they mostly just sit inside a bubble singing and feeling both very disconnected from the battles as well as a lot less ridiculous. The first episode felt very energetic and silly, but executed well and with a lot of promise. The next few episodes were decent but by episode 6 or 7 I remember I was already feeling quite bored and only really felt somewhat jazzed again by the show at episode 12/13. The show never lived up to the promise of the first episode to me though, and got less ridiculous over the following episodes, not more.

How exactly do the Frontier moves "fix" the original series? All they do is remove all the good bits from the show and replace them with more scenes of Sheryl being a slut. Pacing is awful too.

I don't think any of the cast were redundant. They all fulfilled their own unique roles. They just weren't developed past "background character" level, and its entirely the fault of the direction the show took in the second half.

It'll be good if they make Mirage and Hayate the teacher and student respectively. I miss those kinds of relationships in mecha animu and Delta gave off some of that pretty well for the first few eps before they botched it altogether.

It's not the biggest cast ever, but I do think it's too big for it's own good personally. Last time I made that observation someone said it's roughly the same size cast as Frontier, which isn't really true.

Frontier had 3 main characters, (Alto, Sheryl, Ranka), 5 secondary protagonists with some focus (Ozma, Kathy, Luca, Michel, Klan) and 3 villains (Grace, Brera, Leon) and maybe 2 unaffiliated characters with some focus (Birler and Ai-kun). It had other characters like Nanasai, Canaria, Jeffrey Wilder, bridge bunniers, Howard Glass etc. but they had no focus or characterization at any point. That's 11 to 13 characters total, and the vast majority of focus was always on the main trio.

Delta by contrast could be said to have 4 main characters right out the gate (Hayate, Freyja, Mirage, Mikumo), 6 secondary protagonists (Kaname, Makina, Reina, Messer, Arad, Chuck), 8 villains (Heinz, Roid, Keith, Bogue, Theo, Xao, Hermann, Cassim, Grammia) and 4 somewhat unaffiliated characters (Berger Stone, Wright Immelmann, Laurie Maran, Lady M). Again, there are more characters like Ernest Johnson, bridge bunnies, Chuck's family, but those ones have no focus. It's cast is 22 characters to Frontier's 13, over half again as large and I think the strain shows. It is possible for a show to have a bigger cast, sometimes with fewer episodes, but it takes a deft touch to write each of them without wasting screen time and I don't think Delta had that. Even the main focus tended to forget Mirage and focus on Mikumo, but only characterize her as "mysterious" and leave off actually developing that till the show was 3/4's done. The fact that it's exploration lead to a complete wet fart of a reveal didn't help either.

One thing I really don't get is why Mikumo was made her own character, rather than folding her character in to Mirage, or more appropriately Freyja, since tying the mystery element of a character in to the main plot and the main romance just seems more sensible.

Macross Delta the Movie better bring back Yoko Kanno. The show's ost was mostly hit or miss. Some tracks are good but most of them were forgettable. Kanno must return.

I did like the orchestral pieces, like A.D. 2067, and Rhapsody in C Minor but the BGM was definitely weaker than Frontier.
Overall, Teddyloid did a pretty good job, but Kanno is a legend.

You know I think delta would have really done better using Bodacious Space Pirate's shtick of three episodes of plot, three episodes of focusing on characters, three episodes of plot, etc. Maybe it's just me, but I felt like it juggled a larger cast better, and was more consistently good instead of fucking crashing and having to make up filler for twelve episodes.

This. One of the reasons Delta sucked is because they decided to add drama and politics to the conflict. In SDF Zentradis were attacking Earth for seemingly no reason. Yet people liked Milia, people liked silly spy trio. In Delta authors tried hard to explain why windies started the war, but people hated them. Imagine if Bogue challenged Reina to duel, lost and then married her. Imagine if those twins tried to spy on Walkure, but then became idolfags and deserted. People would like those characters.

Macross has always been light hearted, so if it has an identity crisis now it always had one. SDF included the almost complete annihilation of humanity, but was so light hearted in tone for much of the show a lot of people don't even remember that happened.
