Age old question: Would the series have been better if Kamina hadn't died?

I think it would. Nia was a non-character and I'd have liked to see the consequences of Simon learning that Kamina was actually a coward deep down

For one, the movies are more condensed on the unimportant/barely important things
But they have new fight
Like, in the series each of the generals are dealt with separately and have several episodes to them.
In the first movie all three generals attack at the same time.
Also the second movie changed a lot in both small ways and bigways

Great show that introduced me to the mecha genre as a whole. Without this show, I wouldn't have experienced so many other great mecha series and met so many fun people. So, yeah, thank you for that.

Well, if Kamina never died, he would keep hiding the fact that he was secretly a coward for the rest of the show, which means that Simon wouldn't be able to develop into the badass he is later. I think episode 26 shows this the best.

Buuuut I did, Smith's death is what drove Noriko to be badass. If you're talking about Kazumi's breakdown in episode 5, that happened AFTER Smith died.

Smith's death wasn't the only thing, it was a culmination of factors. Either way, Noriko had long since learned that her idol was not what she was cracked up to be. Kasumi was acting like a jerk from episode 1. That's why Noriko had to take it upon herself to become someone who could pilot Gunbuster. She was too distant from Kasumi and didn't have anyone to turn to.

And Kamina was never a jerk so there's no comparable reason Simon would start to lose faith in him without a specific scene where he reveals his cowardice. Which isn't likely to happen given that Kamina basically crawled back from death just to help Simon beat Thymilph. Kamina was a cool bro to Simon from episode one and never stopped that (unless your name is Clawshrimpy), with the only possible thing he wasn't nice about being that he was making out with Simon's crush; but Simon's crush on Yoko was quite clearly just that, a crush and he'd have gotten over it regardless of Kamina's fate and whether he met Nia. When Simon found Lagann, Kamina urged Simon to use it even though Simon tried to give it to him, when Yoko was pushing Kamina to take Lagann Kamina refused and put Simon's interests first, when was scared Kamina put aside his own fear and acted like he wasn't so as to inspire Simon because he wanted Simon to be greater than him. If Kamina hadn't died Simon would just keep standing in Kamina's shadow and trying to emulate him, and Kamina would keep trying to make himself worth of that adulation and aspiring to greater feats to deserve it so that he'd always be the one who was the greater of the two.

First movie: all generals attack at once. They combine their mechs to create DoTenKaiZan.

Second movie:

When LordGenome makes the big drill and gives it to Simon, every separate mech is Tengen Toppa'd. They later combine into Chou Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Chou Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is that huge blue flaming Kamina you probably saw in SRW Z3. In the final part of the battle, Simon fights the Anti-Spiral hand-to-hand, instead of piercing him with Lagann's drill (Lagann throws Simon at the Anti-Spiral).

You don't understand how narrative works if you think that's what'd happen. Simon would figure it out one way or the other. Probably at some point when Kamina thinks he isn't around or when a situation comes up where Kamina can't keep up the facade and finally loses hope. Either way, they wouldn't keep the status quo regardless if that's the direction they wanted to take it.

The narrative was that he didn't have to, because Kamina died. There is no further narrative, because anything else is not narrative but modelling on wishes for the sake of imagination. It's fan fiction, and fan fiction doesn't follow narrative, it follows whatever you wish. Also, if Kamina doesn't lose hope when he's literally dying and Simon has given in to despair, then he's not going to lose hope.

This whole conversation has been speculation to begin with, you don't need to repeat that to me.

And yes, I did find the whole thing about him saying he was actually cowardly absolutely idiotic because not once did he actually show signs of that being the case. Nonetheless, in this scenario, I doubt there would be any choice but to touch upon that.

He viewed himself a coward because he couldn't face danger as a child when his father did. He overcame fear for the sake of Simon, but he viewed himself as a coward still because he couldn't overcome fear for his own sake, only that of others. It's not an unreasonable view frankly, and despite the crazy silliness of Gurren Lagann as a whole, his view of himself is rather grounded.

What were people's thoughts on Gurren Lagann's design and its other forms (Arc,Super Galaxy, TTGL, and Super TTGL)?
