> Godzilla movies fans mistake for being great cinema
>>
>>15748598
Yeah Destoroyah is bog standard Heisei schlock. The emotional ending blinds everyone from the boring characters and typical Kawakita effects.
>>
>>15748620
>The emotional ending
Still, the rest of the Heisei films didn't even have that much. Only Biollante had an interesting story but almost no monster fights as a result
>>
>>15748598
Vs. Destroyah is great and it's obvious people like >>15748620 are just nitpicking it with personal issues.
>>
>>15748598
Terror of Mechagodzilla is great though.

Shut the fuck up. It's garbage. The effects have the basic suits that are stiff, the characters all disappear halfway through the movie to watch the fights on a huge ass monitor, sparks are going off everywhere, the soundtrack has the awful Destoroyah theme, and every reference to 1954 isn't utilized well at all.

>>15748640
GMK should go into the flawed territory, and Ghidorah should be in the good territory. It's not as good as Mothra but it's above Mechagodzilla. Ghidorah 1991, Ebirah, and Son of Godzilla are respectable enough.
>>
>>15748640

>King Kong vs Godzilla isn't on here but Godzilla vs Hedorah is

This infographic is trash, I love Biollante but I know it doesn't belong there either.
>>
>>15748716
Yeah King Kong vs Godzilla is underrated. It's effects have aged the worse out of most of the Showa films but it's a good comedy.

Why not? Besides, you need something there to appease the Heisei fans and Biollante is the best thing that era offers.
>>
>>15748736
Not him but for a lot of people it doesn't tie all of the story threads together.
>>
>>15748640
That's a surprisingly complete selection, you have every Era represented. I would say it's a nice way to start the franchise and get a solid idea of the different periods.

I personally don't like the Heisei era, but like >>15748736 said, it's a nice entry in this era alongside Ghidorah.

Barring the last twenty minutes, why is Destoroyah a great movie?
>>
>>15748736

>awful sound effects(cars skid on dirt)
>poor casting (like that super spy manlet)
>good vfx
>amazing music(though ifukube thought it was too western sounding)

I do agree it's the best heisei, but it's a really mixed bag of a movie. Going to re-watch it soon anyways.

It took me three sittings in two different days to finish watching the first Godzilla movie (1954). Kept falling up asleep, but I'm going to blame a full stomach and afterwork exhaustion for that.

Was pretty good, but incredibly deppressingly SAD. That eyepatch guy really got the short end of the stick.

Guess I'll have to follow it by the 1955 sequel,..but honestly I can't wait to get to the Heisei (vs Mechagodzilla) parts.

Megalon being horrible at being a terrifying giant monster was hilarious. Horribly clumsy bastard hopped around everywhere and lost a fight with a broken dam. JJ was goofy as shit too, they probably should have tried a show with him instead of a movie, but I guess that'd just be Zone Fighter 2.

It's the best good-bad goji movie, really. I'm still genuinely entertained every time I see it. Can't say the same for Gigan.

What's with the hostility towards Godzilla vs Gigan? The characters are cool, the climatic battle (aside from the unnecessary stock footage) was entertaining, it has an awesome collection of Ifukube hits, and the aliens are among the best in the series. It feels like a Golden Age film without the budget.
>>
>>15751977

Too grim-dark for a Godzilla movie about Godzilla fighting a cyborg space chicken in an amusement park.

And the re-used stock footage was bad. BAD. The fight could've been okay but the stock footage was too much. I'm glad it didn't bother you and you could enjoy the film but it was too much for me.

And the aliens were okay. There's way better showa aliens that aren't just creepy businessmen.

>And the re-used stock footage was bad. BAD. The fight could've been okay but the stock footage was too much.
I'll readily admit that stock footage is a crippling issue. Like the switching between night and day without much regard for continuity and the notable difference in fight styles. The fights in the older footage was a lot more energetic. Sticks out like a sore thumb. And most of the fight took place during the day, so why not set the final battle at day? I would like to see someone edit the recycled scenes out.

Makes me wish there existed a version of Godzilla vs Gigan with a decent budget. I thought the movie was entertaining even despite the strange tonal shifts (or perhaps in part because of them), but imagine if Godzilla and Ghidorah got new suits, Ghidorah didn't look like dogshit when he's flying, and if they composed an original theme for Gigan. Heck, maybe even actual alien designs instead of enlarged living cockroaches.

"To start things off, this is the Godzilla that has grown on me more than any other, Jun Fukuda's "Son Of Godzilla." I'll be honest, when I was a child, I despised this film. I always considered the titular son of Godzilla, Minya, as annoying, irritating and made Godzilla look uncool. But as I've grown old, there was a child-like naivety to Minya that made me smile and I soon realized that he added much more to character of Godzilla than ever before.

As I grow older, the more I appreciate and love "Son Of Godzilla." Which is odd, considering that it is the most light-hearted and comical Godzilla film. Then again, this does make it more endearing and relatable.

On a far-off deserted island, a group of researchers have been running weather experiments for months, while also avoiding the large mantis' running around the island. But when one of their experiments goes wrong, thanks to unnatural brain waves interfering with their equipment, unbearable heat and radiation is sent upon the island, mutating the mantis to giant size and able to find the source of the brain waves - an egg containing a baby Godzilla. Before the mantis', nicknamed Kamacuras, can kill the baby, the adult Godzilla shows up to reluctantly raise his adopted son to become just like him."
>>
>>15752972
"What I love the most about "Son Of Godzilla" is how it evolves the character Godzilla, by actually giving him a character. Before this film, Godzilla was just a monster - a living atomic bomb that could not be stopped and would fight any other monster that got in his way. But now, he has another life to worry about besides his own. And he intends to make his kid into another version of him, a cold, uncaring, unstoppable creäture of destruction.

But over the course of the film, even Godzilla begins to realize that Minya is not like him. Minya doesn't want to destroy other living beings, as he seems to avoid fighting Kamacuras, and wants to make friends with the humans on the island.

Suddenly, Godzilla has to stop being a monster, and become a mentor. One of the best scenes in the film is when Godzilla has to teach Minya how to properly roar and use his atomic breath. After Minya lets out a loud shriek, rather than his usual donkey-like noises, Godzilla nods in possible approval, but I don't think even he is sure what to think.

The same theme is shown in Godzilla. He is not just one creäture now, but the example for future Godzilla's'. He has to sacrifice his own needs and desires, so that his race can survive passed himself.

All of this culminates in the ending, which I hold as the best ending in the Godzilla franchise. After defeating a giant spider, Kumonga, that nearly killed Minya, a massive snowstorm has fallen upon the island. With the temperature dropping rapidly, it is becoming too cold for anything to survive. Godzilla has enough strength to leave the island, but Minya is too weak, as he stumbles in the snow, reaching for Godzilla's help.
>>
>>15752972
>>15752975
"I won't spoil anything else about the ending, other than this is one of the few scenes that reduces me to tears. Sad scenes in cinema rarely make me cry. But incredibly happy scenes where everything works out perfectly give me the biggest smile and tears of joy. The ending to "Son Of Godzilla" is one of compassion, sacrifice and pitch-perfect character development.

It is like watching a father realize how much he cares about his son. That he loves his child more than he loves himself and he would do anything to keep that bond alive. No matter what happens him, his son deserves to live his own life. This is nothing short of breath-taking and heart-warming.

The fact that any scene between two actors in rubber suits while being covered in thick snow makes me feel emotional is true test to the power of "Son Of Godzilla."

"Son Of Godzilla" is certainly the most unique and beautiful film in the Godzilla franchise. Complimented by a vibrant color scheme, great use of its island setting and a joyful score by Masaru Sato, this film is gorgeous to behold and listen to. Minya is adorable in his child-like innocence and curiosity, and gives the film the emotional punch that it needs. The monster fight scenes are tense and woven into the plot without feeling forced or unnecessary. Most importantly, this film gives Godzilla a heart alongside his awe and power."

Here's a smaller version of this guy's thoughts. He ranks it as his second favorite Godzilla, behind Mothra vs Godzilla and ahead of Gojira.

"You’re probably wondering what this film about Godzilla’s son did that makes it better than “Godzilla.” It makes me emotional. This is no easy task. To my knowledge, there are only two films that are able to make me burst into tears: “It’s A Wonderful Life” and this film.

This is also one of the few Godzilla films that gives Godzilla an actual character-arc. It makes out to be more than just a monster, but a character with flaws, wants, needs and emotions. At the beginning of the film, he starts out as a heartless and uncaring monster. By the end, he is willing to sacrifice himself for his adopted son. To make me care about something like that shows the strength of this picture. This is made even better when you realize that it is being conveyed by two guys in rubber suits. Stunning.

Also, this is probably the most well-written Godzilla film. Every scene has a purpose, with every action sequence having a reason to be there. The monsters have a bigger reason to be here than to just smash buildings and trample people and the human characters don’t feel like superfluous additions to spout exposition. In fact, the humans are funny, well-thought out and have some tense moments where they are at each others throats.

Above all else, this is a fun movie. It does exactly what I love most about monster movies: Making me smile. That’s probably the biggest reason why I put this one ahead of “Godzilla.” Because as good as that film is, it does not make me happy. “Son Of Godzilla” is a blast to watch, whether it is making you laugh, exciting you with suspenseful action sequences or pulling at your heartstrings. "

Alternatively there's this opinion:

> Wanna know what it looks like when the bottom falls out of a movie franchise? Because it looks like Son of Godzilla, the eighth film to feature Japan's most beloved giant monster and the first for which I have absolutely not one blessed thing to say in its defense. You can probably guess the reason why from the title: the process of domesticating a giant, city-destroying metaphor for nuclear weaponry was finally completed in 1967, when he was given a little daikaiju toddler to nurture. I don't know if this inherently means that the film has to suck, but in practice that's exactly what happens, especially given that profoundly insipid scenes of big Godzilla teaching little Minilla (that's the ugly fucker's name, officially, though it never shows up in dialogue) how to breath radioactive fire, or fight other kaiju, or roar, take up approximately three hours of the 86-minute film's running time.

> The real problem here isn't the impoverished storytelling, though. You won't get very far with daikaiju eiga if you need a rich human story that ties in well with the monster action every single time. Honestly, it's not even the desire to make this a friendly, fun, children's movie, since there's an unmistakable thread of matinee movie silliness in all but the most absolutely grave and grim giant monster movies. The great problem of the film is that the filmmakers so clearly didn't give a shit, didn't have the resources to give a shit, and didn't have anything worth giving a shit about. This is a monumentally lazy movie, never more glaringly than in the climactic fight with Kumonga, suspended by black wires that show up with unmistakable clarity in virtually every shot that the spider appears in. Effects director Arikawa Sadamasa didn't have the resources of his great predecessor, Tsuburaya Eiji, of course, but there's such a thing as trying, and that's in short supply in Son of Godzilla.

> Having already gone the "big and wacky" route with Ebirah, director Fukuda Jun doubled-down on trivial nonsense here, making every moment as breezy and light as possible, and in the process completely eradicating any dramatic stakes whatsoever. Even when Minilla is surrounded by three giant mantises with razor-sharp claws and nightmare teeth, there's not the remotest sense that he's actually in danger. The human characters are visited with such indifference and blandness (only Kubo emerges with any kind of presence, and it's the kind that comes from frenzied over-acting) that we don't care about them to begin with, and even if we did, the monsters are more of an inconvenience than a danger, absent the spooky early scenes where the Kamacuras skitter around at night.

> Worst of all, though, are the monsters. Not simply that their battles are indifferently staged; one expects that. But they look like crap. Kumonga is decent, I suppose, as giant spider puppets go. But Minilla is an ugly little irritating troll and Godzilla! - oh Lord, save me from having to remember what they did to my dear Godzilla! The name of the game, never forget, was child-friendly straight down the line, and that means a round Godzilla face with big eyes, skinny build, all his pointy ends blunted. This I can swallow, though not with any enthusiasm to speak of. But the chintziness of it! It's the most vinyl-looking Godzilla yet, and the eyes look like giant plastic orbs. Minilla may be hideous, but Godzilla looks like a costume you could by in any corner shop, and this I could not forgive were the movie actually decent in anyway. Coming as merely the crowning point of awfulness in a film that tells a lousy story poorly and dumbs-down an already simply concept to the point of complete triviality, it all leaves Son of Godzilla too flimsy and pointless to bear.

>because Jet Jaguar couldn't carry his own feature film
Was he supposed to? For a Ultraman knockoff it always struck me as odd that he is so lacking in abilities and gimmicks. He can grow and fly, which are the bare minimum, but they didn't even bother to give him special moves or a finisher of any sort. Compare him to say, Zone Fighter.
>>
>>15755214
It's a giant monster that turns into equally vicious smaller monsters on land and could potentially deoxygenate the entire ocean just by living in it.

> "Godzilla vs. Megalon was originally planned as a non-Godzilla film, a solo vehicle for Jet Jaguar, which was the result of a contest Toho had for children in mid-to-late 1972. The winner of the contest was an elementary school student, who submitted the drawing of a robot called Red Arone, which superficially resembled both Ultraman and Mazinger Z. The robot was renamed Jet Jaguar and was set to star in Jet Jaguar vs. Megalon, which pitted him against Megalon. However, after doing some screen tests and storyboards, Toho figured Jet Jaguar would not be able to carry the film on his own, either in screen appearance or marketing value, so they shut the project down during pre-production. Nearly a month later, producer Tomoyuki Tanaka called in screenwriter Shinichi Sekizawa to revise the script to add Godzilla and Gigan. To make up for lost production time, the film was shot in a hasty three weeks. The production time totaled at nearly six months, from planning to finish."

No, she's pretty standard. It's her son Leo who has a bunch of insane powers and can just make forms up each movie. By the end he split into hundreds of tiny copies, time travel and has armor that can tank Ghidorah's attacks like they are nothing.

I'm talking the classic 50 meter tall Godzilla. I miss when he was smaller. I almost wish they'd make a godzilla movie set in the 1960s. Like a period piece but done with modern tokusatsu effects similar to Shingoji.

Kinda like the millennium films but actually set in the 60s. I dunno, i just really miss smol Gojira and i'm sad we'll never get him again now that Goji is so big in all his new incarnations

I prefer his appearances in Ghidrah and Monster when he was a frantically moving dragon with a bell-like voice. He got stomped in DAM, looked ragged and barely mobile in Vs Gigan and Zone Fighter, his modern shriek is annoying, and his Final Wars iteration is painful to look at.

>Where did the praise for 84 come from?
People fell for the serious = good meme. Return of Godzilla is to the Cold War what Gojira is to post-WWII Japan, Vs Hedorah is to the rampant pollution of the early 70s, GMK is to the desire to forget the past (sins of WWII), and Shin Godzilla is to Fukushima. However, it dropped the ball in the execution department with its dullness and lackluster characters. Has a nice OST and atmosphere though.

I don't know, what I like about this movie was his links to the themes of the Showa's movies. Mainly because I feel the Heisei and Millennium era failed to be more than just fun.
GMK is great, but I feel it's the weakest of the Kaneko's films, and I think the gamera trilogy is a more suited watch for an eva fan.

Shin on the other hand is constantly referencing former movies and theme, and actualising them with the Fukushima incident.

Whether you prefer GMK or the Gamera trilogy is up to you, I prefer the characters on the gamera's films, but I really like the idea of a Godzilla as a grudge from victim of war crimes.

Anyway Shin got the gimmicky directing of Anno for sure, and it does give the movie an appeal for eva fans, but the whole pseudo-ufologist subplot both in eva and gamera, as well as all the kaiju fights of the first half of Eva makes (see pic related) me associate the two more than eva and shin.

But yeah Eva draws huge influences from the classical Showa stuff as well I might be mistaken.

So I just saw Mothra vs. Godzilla (64).

It was pretty fun and silly, but I seriously don't get why it's considered a staple of the showa era and is given such high praise.
>>
>>15763629
It set the bar for what the typical Godzilla formula is, since the only ones that came before it were King Kong vs. Godzilla and the first two, which had almost ten years between them.

Also you have to admit the effects were pretty solid. They improved on their compositing from the last film and Mothra is a marvel. The humanitarian message is really heartfelt in this one, too. It all adds up.

>>15763629

The characters are charismatic and their struggles engaging (among the best in the series), Akira Ifukube perfected his scores here, and the monster action is finely crafted and unique. Outside of the original film, this is one of the few movies where both people who enjoy Honda's sensibilities/aesthetics and the people prefer the titular character being treated with (almost) complete gravity and seriousness are served well. While it's light-natured, it doesn't fall into outright camp. It also features one of the more popular Godzilla designs. After this film and Monster Zero the technical quality of these films would be on an inconsistent decline for a decade.

Does anyone saw the Italian colorised version ? Any thought ? Any links to get it in not shitty VHS rip quality ? All I found was this http://rarelust.com/godzilla-1977/ but the subs and the video are shit.
There is some kind of teaser in good quality on youtube (see pic related) but not the full film.

I love the music tho https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OyWqoB82lE

What do you hope for in the next live-action Japanese Godzilla movie? What monsters, characters, setting, music, narrative, director, etc? Do you want more CGI or would you prefer going back to the basics?

Just a wild guess.
The statue they're building is 2m.
The building they chose to advertise Goji is over 200 meters.

It's probably too much, I think a reasonable is estimate is around 120m.

> In 1992 a young filmmaker named Shusuke Kaneko lobbied to direct Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992). Producer Shogo Tomiyama shot him down, opting for an in-studio director (Takao Okawara). Fearing he would never get a chance to direct a kaiju movie, Kaneko eventually accepted the task of reviving Daiei's Gamera franchise.

> At a fraction of the cost Toho was making their Godzilla films, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995) was an unprecedented success. As late as 1997, every single one of Toho's 1990s Godzilla films had failed to garner interest from overseas distributors. The studio had been under the false impression that the only way to reach a broader, international audience was to throw more money at their films. Meanwhile, Kaneko's Gamera was given immediate State-side distribution, theatrical screenings and praise from even western critics. The result left egg all over Toho's face.
>>
>>15771010
Daei went bankrupt nonetheless, plus the gamera's films were in part produced by Toho, see the logo at the beginning of the movies.
>>
>>15771109
They distributed, nothing more. Every theater in Japan is practically owned by Toho.
>>
>>15771256
So the succes of Gamera bring more money to Toho, from there perspective, it's a good things that those films exist. There is no concurence between the two franchise.

Plus Godzilla Vs Mothra did earn a bit of a succes in japanese theater too.
>>

>>
>>15770405
Godzilla straight up destroys Tokyo's then new tax towers, and he kills Shindo, a former Imperial veteran who prospered off Japan's new wealth that was brought upon economic arrogance and exploitation
>>
>>15771010
When the first Heisei Gamera film released, Toho was embarrassed by how much more better it was than their own movies despite being made with half the budget. They gave Kawakita a smaller effects budget too since they thought he could do the same as Higuchi. He obviously couldn't.
>>
>>15771388
Shin was thicc, anigoji is bara.
He's also not a carbon based life-form, a unique trait among other gojis.

Has this ever been subbed?
>>
>>15771885
The Millennium got off to a weak start and Toho was on the verge of shutting it down early. They turned to Kaneko for help and he gave them the highest grossing Godzilla movie of the era. Also the most acclaimed in years at that point. Then Toho returned to business as usual before putting their faith in Ryuhei Kitamura and boy did that backfire.
>>
I watched Shin Godzilla in the cinemas finally this week, and it was great. Really enjoyed it.

I want to get it on blu ray, but apparently there's problems with the BD version to do with the subtitles?
>>
>>15771944
No idea, but the 1994 Yamato Takeru film did get subs however.
>>
>>15773024
Any idea where I should start looking for it? I've been waiting for that one forever.
>>
>>15773081
Generally one could try to find it on Piratebay or the Kickass Torrents mirrors.
>>
>>15772129
Well GMK's performance is clouded because it was double-billed with Hamtaro, which was the first time they did that, so it's unclear how many people came to show their kids Hamtaro and how many actually cared about Godzilla.

Also Toho asked Kaneko to come back, but he was already starting work on To Sing of Love, so they fell back on Tezuka.
>>
>>15772550
American Blu? I haven't noticed any problems.

I was just thinking after watching it again that I'd like to see a scene where autismo girl and the rest of the team statistically figure out how many of their dicks she can suck in an hour while Decisive Battle plays in the background.

Anyway, post webm's.
>>
Why do people like Showa It's not as if though I hate Showa, there's just legitimately nothing interesting that it can offer me.
I just can't sit down and watch a hour of extremely formulaic and objectively bad acting and writing with little to no hook besides "hey im watching old thing this is neat i am so patrician". I'm not enough of a masochist to subject myself to that and I don't care enough about the opinions of others online to try and gain their approval by pretending that I think Showa is in any way actually better than any Heisei.
>>
>>15775033
is this just the spicy new meme or are you the same troll/ autistic kid in every thread?
>>
>>15775033
But Showa is better than Heisei. Heisei was made to sell bandai toys, the showa films actually have something to tell.
>>
>>15775419
Dudes been posting that in every toku thread, its either the original guy and he is truly the most autistic person on the planet, or someone posting it as a meme, either way I dont think anyone truly dislikes showa Godzilla as a whole. If they do, I feel bad for them.
And Heisei is fine as well. No need for stupid era war in a Godzilla thread because each era has its awful movies and great movies
>>
You know Final Wars may be one of the weaker films. But its just so balls out insane and fun that I just love it.
>>
>>15775431
>each era has its awful movies
Such as?
>>
>>15775988
Just my opinion here, But showa has Godzilla raids again and son of Godzilla, Heisei has Godzilla vs Mothra, and Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla. Awful may have been too strong a word, but those are the movies I enjoy the least. Each of those movies have elements that I enjoy, but overall are not good movies.

And I've seen the millennium series the least so I can't really comment on them as much
>>
>>15776261

For the millennium series I'd say Vs Megaguirus is the bad apple in the bunch
>>
>>15776261
Son of Godzilla isn't even bad at all. Everybody only bitches about superficial problems like the suits when everything else is just as good as the other Showa films.
>>
>>15776293
It's the movie I've seen the least out of showa series, so a re watch could change my opinion. I think ive only seen it once all the way through, unless I watched it as a kid and just lumped it in my brain with Godzillas revenge

What I want to know is does Universal intend to follow up on the Them! tease from Kong?
>>

>>
>>15779981
There was a Them! tease?
>>
>>15780009
There was a scene where John C. Reilly's character went out of his way to talk about giant ants on the island that sound like birds, and as far as I know WB still owns the rights to Them!. I feel like I'm the only person to notice it.
>>
>>15779981
Also I meant Warner Brothers lel.
>>
>>15779926
>>15779958
What couldnit mean though? Godzilla dies at the end of this one? Or we find out that 2 takes place in the past, and that Godzilla is destroyed with an Oxygen Destroyer? Or just a cool piece of Godzilla lore that the director wanted to post cause he thought it was cool?
>>
>>15780033
Hope it bears fruit. Them! were a byproduct of nuclear testing, right? That'd fit in just fine with Godziller.

Part of it's probably that not too many people've watched Them!.
>>
>>15780054
The apparent title of the film will be Godzilla: King of Monsters, so there's a link to the 1956 remake. Still doesn't fit with the time line they established.
>>
>>15776293

Yeah, it's on JP Kindle for ~¥750
>>
>>15780578
I owned all monsters attack as a kid and not son of Godzilla so it will always be better in my nostalgic eyes
>>
>>15780578
Son of Godzilla is decent but not really good. All Monsters Attack is truly one of the worst Godzilla ever made, even if it's from Honda, and still have nice visual ideas.

>>15775988
>>15776261
My personnal Worst Godzilla's movies were Final Wars for the Millennium era, Vs Mechagodzilla for the Heisei Era and All Monsters Attack for the Showa Era. If you want to talk about american remake, well the 98 film is the worst, but still managed to be better than the 3 other I mentionned earlier.
But that's my opinion.
