Both characters are nothing alike for one Bryke didn't really know what they wanted to do with Sokka in the beginning he was too serious then he was all comedic relief and finally became way too competent to make up for the fact that he was the normalfag of the group which made his development non-existent and when they did bring up the fact that he didn't have super powers it felt jarring as fuck given the fact that up to that point he was a strategist, an inventor and a ladies man. Lance feels more like a Kai Shiden expy right down to the body language and mannerisms than Sokka.

This only applies to Keith and Hunk who's character designs were so generic back then that what little differences they had can't really escape that fact. Lance, Pidge and Shiro are mostly different from their original counterparts, Allura is such a nothing character in the original anyways outside being "The Chick" that her skin color change doesn't mean anything. If there's any character that got the biggest overhaul its Coran and for the better.

I also don't really mind it because we got some pretty cool shit out of these episodes. Lotor's fighter craft was great, the whole thing about Voltron being made out of metatron was great and suddenly made Haggar a lot more interesting when previously the Altean reveal was just kind of meh, the AU episode was great. Even if Shiro being a manchurian agent is pretty obvious, right now having him in mission control is a neat shakeup, and if they kept him in that role for a while it would work well. It's a solid block of episodes, and hopefully it leads to more in the future.

Did anyone else get a weird vibe when Shiro told Keith to "take the hit and accept the consequences" when the bad guys were about to shoot him in that one episode this season? Didn't feel like something ol Shiro would say.

Lotor is pretty cool, but I find myself slightly disappointed that the two times he showed some benevolence he walks it back almost immediately and betrays a rather vindictive nature. I'd have preferred if he'd been more accepting of and embracing to the one enemy guy he humiliated in the arena, rather than immediately saying to throw him to the boonies and then later using him. It'd have made him that little bit more interesting as a villain.

I'm looking forward to seeing his team's Voltron unit too. And how he and Zarkon play off each other once Zarkon inevitably comes back in to things.

He's probably the real Shiro, but the Galra definitely fucked with him in some way. His escape seems engineered, since if I recall there's a short bit with someone off screen saying it was a success as he escapes or something. He'll probably take over the more "command" and strategic elements of leadership, while Keith plays a more tactical element and acts as a field leader.
