WHY/m/? I saw nothing but unanimous praise for this series so I spent $160 on the blu-rays. 3 episodes in and it is one of the worst shows I have seen. Now I am out $160 and have these three unopened blu-ray sets polluting my shelf of my highly curated collection of impeccable taste.
>>
>>15729371
It's actually pretty good, but more in an 80s sitcom kind of way. Some episodes are artsy fartsy though.
>>
>blind-buying anime series

What is this, 1998?
>>
>>15729371
>buying

also you should never listen to /m/ for anything
>>
More like impeccable shit taste.
>>
>>15729394
But this time /m/ was right. OP is just a faggot with shit-taste. Next thing he's gonna say is that he doesn't like Dai-Guard.
>>
>>15729399
no /m/ is never right, this case isn't any different

people just have supreme shit taste here

Send them to me OP. I haven't watched it yet.
>>

how paranoid do you have to be to think that

patlabor is shit just admit it
>>
>>15729424
Or maybe they actually like Patlabor you contrarian? I know it's cool to hate on everything on /m/, but some people just like the shows and aren't lying to themselves.
>>
>>15729371
>Not pirating everything and only buying what you actually like
What's wrong with you?
>>
>>15729440
you can like something but that doesn't make it not shit

there are people that like trash shows everywhere
>>
> polluting my shelf of my highly curated collection of impeccable taste.

>Brain Powered

Bait.
>>
>>15729448
And just because you think it's bad doesn't mean that it's objectively bad. There is hardly any objectivity in the first place(besides shit like awful animation, inconsistent writing and etc...). You could have something "perfectly" written and directed, doesn't mean that it will be liked for sure.

I'm not gonna say that every show is a 10/10 and we should enjoy them for what they are(I'm not a tool). But muh objectivity is overrated crap.

Lost my HD last week and my patlabor copy is gone.

Does anyone knows the fansub who did the rip of tv series some time ago (pic)? DDLs? Torrents? Please, help.

The best advice I can give you right now, and I am sorry I am late to tell you this, is that /m/'s taste fucking sucks. Like, its notoriously bad.

This is the board that insists that Gundam is good, and that Getter is anything other than terrible.

A good rule of thumb is that for anything /m/ recommends as good, just google when it came out. The older the show is, the more likely it is that /m/ is just being nostalgic anime hipsters about it and the show is probably not actually good. Despite /m/s autistic shrieking, writing and show quality has generally improved over time, not degraded.

There are very, very few shows where this test will fail you, but its going to save you so much grief that its worth following anyway.
>>
>>15729371
Fuck you, Patlabor is comfy.
>>
>>15729371
You got ghost in the shell in there though, Oshii directed the first film of that, he also did Patlabor. His style is pretty consistent.

Well, what didn't you like about it?
>>
>>15729464
THANK YOU.

Also:
>You could have something "perfectly" written and directed
No, you couldn't, because there's no metric for measuring these things. At best you can look at extremes and say one is worse or better than the other in those categories because the difference is so noticeable, but it's not like you can take two works with high production values and state that one is mathematically superior. And animation and such, those are things that are on a relatively linear scale of quality. Don't even start with things for which there's no basis for comparison. Storytelling has no unit of measurement.

>>
>>15730305
This. What is good or bad storytelling can be very cultural.
>>
>>15730305
I agree completely, that's why I wrote "perfectly". But some people are sadly stupid, I had some guy argue that characters can and should be objectively liked and disliked and that every character should be relatable. Both of those things being impossible since people are so different, with varying likes and dislikes, life experiences and everything.
But he studies film in University, so us plebs can't understand the genius.

If you don't want them I'll take them off your hand

Also you're dumb for not buying The Early Days OVA first to see if Patlabor's really your thing though, it's a difference of $25 versus $160
>>
>>15729371
>Now I am out $160 and have these three unopened blu-ray sets polluting my shelf of my highly curated collection of impeccable taste.
Post the rest of your shelf.

I like what I see so far.

>>15730323
The Early Days really bored the fuck outta me.
Patlabor The Movie, I think I enjoyed the most.
>>
>>15730333
Early Days was pretty lame. In my opinion, Patlabor's really a character-centric sitcom, and Early Days was too short to properly establish the characters and their situation, so it never quite clicked. I think that's why On TV is my favourite version, because it actually did flesh out the characters around which the series is focussed.

>>15731255
The domestic BD isn't too bad if you only ever plan on watching the dub. They really botched the subs up though. And Anchor Bay's recent SAC BDs are some of the worst releases in recent memory.
>>
>>15729481
You should have bought it like OP-kun.
>>
>>15729371
I have no sympathy for your buyer's remorse.

What do you want to hear? "Sorry you don't like a highly acclaimed series?"

Just sell it off and make most if not all of your money back you autist.

>>
>>15731184
First that makes no sense, second Patlabor does have action scenes that include the Patlabors
>>
>>15731401
How bad is their SAC release? I've been debating picking it up instead of piecing together the old Manga/Bandai release.
>>
>>15732252
Pretty bad:
-closed captioning as the subtitles
-no chapter stops
-Japanese audio track cuts in certain times when playing the dub

You're better off getting the slightly more expensive Korean SAC releases from Kimchi DVD. They're based on the expensive Japanese discs and have none of the issues of the Starz/AB release.

>>
>>15732526
I guess back then they allowed Manga Entertainment to release it in the US, same with the Manga release of Macross II and Animeigo's & ADV's SDF DVDs.
>>
I want to watch Patlabor because the designs are cool and a lot of people here say it's great, but I don't like mecha anime that lacks action and doesn't focus on the robots. I'm aware this is the case for the OVA, but what about the TV series? I'm not asking for a fight every episode, and don't mind if there's episodes where not much happens, but is there at least a decent amount of robut fightan? Like say compared to SDF Macross?
>>
>>15735539
There are some episodes without any mecha fightan at all, but there are some very cool fights in some episodes. I enjoyed the Griffon fights, for instance.
>>
>>15735542
That sounds good, then. I used Macross to compare because it too had episodes with no robots at all, but it still loved the show altogether.
>>
>>15735539
It's hard to compare, Macross is a narrative following a cast of characters, Patlabor TV is an episodic, slice of life series. It does have some multiparters focusing on the mecha though.
>>
if you dont like patlabor you should probably kill yourself desu senpai
just stating my opinion dont get mad at me

That's just because you have terrible taste.
>>
>>15729371

I don't trust the opinions of people with skeletal hands, OP.
>>
I love Patlabor and have nothing but good things to say about it, but why would you take my word and spend $160 instead of checking it out yourself?

Wait, I thought Turn A's western release got canned? Does the Jap bluray have English subs?
>>
>>15736420
Bandai of America's release got shitcanned along with that company. They had the subs ready and the Syd Mead interviews done, but no release. When Right Stuff got the Gundam license they put it out on DVD, then they offered the DVD owners a trade-in if they wanted to upgrade to the blu ray. They've released the two movies too but on DVD only.
>>
r8 my recent pickups, got the whole thing for $45. Neo Ranga is a blind buy since I've been meaning to watch it for a while and they were $2.50/ea so I figured why not.

I got really lucky on Giant Robo, that particular release usually goes for $50-90 depending on the condition. Even if it's not in particularly great condition, when I saw it sitting there for a whopping $15 I had to have it. Plus it gives me an excuse to watch Ginrei Special.

Hit up specialty stores, most of them usually have an anime section in their DVD section. Mostly single volumes worth nothing but occasionally you'll strike gold. If you're in Ohio try The Exchange some time, if you can handle the hipster as fuck atmosphere they have some great prices.
