"Getter Robo Saga" is mainly just a blanket term for the manga that Ken Ishikawa wrote and drew. It's no real knock on the non-Ishikawa Getters, though by the same token a LOT of them are just not good, like Dash and Darkness. Hien is fun enough though, give it a read.

Wrong. Getter Robo Saga is only a fraction of Getter manga by Ken Ishikawa. Getter Robo Saga is the canon narrative of Getter Robo, it's the main continuity.

Now then, enough shitposting, let's get down to brass tacks.
Don't get me wrong, Getter got dark. Hell, sometimes it was edgy. Sometimes it was a little hard to stomach. ESPECIALLY after G. but Darkness or DASH or whatever the hell you wanna call it is the worst Getter Robo has ever gotten. It is rife with jarring and out of place gore, "ecchi" shit, body horror, and everything else that's wrong with manga that you can imagine. If there's an issue you have with modern anime and manga, it's probably somewhere within the chapters of Darkness. Apparently no one during the production of this travesty didn't bother to tell the main writer/artist/mangaka or whatever to chill the fuck out and tone it down. As a decently hardcore fan of the series and super robots in general, I can admit that Getter is over the top at times, reminder that Shin Getter and its pilots fucking fused with the surface of Mars in the final arc of Go, but this is so far over the top that it lost its sense of direction. Much like Icarus, it flew too close to the sun and burned its wings off only to crash into the sea below and drown.

If there is a god, I pray to said deity that a series like this never comes about ever again. This manga, in just one chapter, managed to disgust me and anger me. For the love of all that is holy, do not make the same mistake that I did. This ain't Getter. This is generic fluff that has the great name of Getter Robo slapped onto it, and it baffles me that it made it past the initial pitch.

tl;dr, save yourself and don't read this hideous mess.

Also, I don't get why people are so mad about Darkness. It was never supposed to be taken seriously in the first place, it's just a gore-fest with getter influences and concepts. It didn't ruin Getter Robo because it's nor cannon nor did it ever try. People should be far more concerned with where Devolution is headed since that is taking itself seriously and self proclaimed cannon (with all the parallel universes and stuff).

Hien is the best Non-Ishikawa Getter there is, now if only it were translated entirely...

That was a baseless rumor. Hell, Hien doesn't even make much sense in the context of Go and Arc anyway. Hayato forgot to mention that there was an entirely different Getter team and group of enemies in between Go and Arc? Not likely. But it's such a good manga and doesn't step on the toes of other Getter series, so I would welcome it to Getter Saga if it was ever included. Devolution? Not so much.

Second, It wasn't part of the "Saga" since only Ishikawa can work on the "Saga". The overall message of Civilization, and ascension, is lost thanks to the popularity of Shin Getter Armageddon; which is why I think New Getter is created, to introduce said philosophy into the franchise. It got thrown out the moment Ishikawa unexpectedly kicks the bucket.

I kinda agree on both accounts; it's good enough to be part of the "continuity" but not the saga itself. Devolution, like Apocryphal, is just another attempt to cash in to the fame that is Shin Getter Armageddon (hell, the multiverse thing is straight out of the ending of Armageddon).

It's Getter-3 is amazing.
