They actually did that in Dragonar.
Dragoons, the production model of the Dragonar units, were generalized units each able to fulfill all 3 of the more specialized Dragonars' combat roles, but not to the same extent. In practice, a squad of Dragoons could combine their jamming or detection fields to produce a greater total output than Dragonar-3 alone could.
