Dude SDF Macross has atrocious animation. Putting up a 5 second excellently animated sequence out of 39 episodes doesn't invalidate this fact.

Macross is all over the place. It has some serious quality and some real gems.

There's a reason why that's the best scene in SDF.

The animation budget for Macross was spent like how a careless college student spends his budget. They'll buy a $5,000 laptop they don't need then dig pennies out of the side of the road when it comes time to pay rent and get all the rest of the supplies they need. Two seconds of awesome and hours upon hours of pure animation poverty.

The SDF folks seemed to know exactly where they were putting money and why, choosing to make most of it look cheap with a few incredible sequences instead of all of it looking only vaguely less cheap with no stand out moments at all because spreading it all out won't improve the whole very much.

That's the damn opening.

SDF had really awful animation and in the worst parts even, ep.11 might as well be the most important up to that point and it looks like a slideshow.
But I can understand their problems, Kawamori was what, 21 at the time?
Ishiguro was there to direct them and make it so the whole wouldn't suck but it was still a project started by very young pros, at that age in America they don't even let you direct a radio program let alone a cartoon series.

There are a few moments of really poor animation and a few moments of good animation. The vast majority of the show has pretty standard early 80's animation. It's fine and is not bad as a whole.

Watch the film, you'll get 99% of the Macross experience without all the bullshit filler. Recap episodes and the episode when Hikaru is sick and goes on hallucination and many more like it.
If you really really want to watch the tv show here's how : Episodes 1-5, The Daedalus Attack, Macross back on Earth, The episode where the barrier explodes, episodes 25-26-27 and the last 3. Everything else can be thrown away.
