The red baron died at age 25 with years of experience under his belt, and the only reason he wasn't put I sooner was because he was in the trenches and not in the air supply.

Pilots in the world wars were very young, and if there were another war with that kind of need for fighter pilots again you can guarantee they'd be putting 18 year olds in them.

Air Forces can afford to be picky now days because the airplanes are that much more complex and there are just fewer of them around. 18 year olds flew Fokkers and Sopwiths because those planes were extremely simple in operation and flight compared to a current day fighter or bomber.

I think the danger has more to do with it being your CO's sister.
>>
>>15717741
The USAF won't even consider you unless you have a bachelors, preferably in something STEM. After that, you need to be commissioned as an officer (which requires completing either OTS, AFA or AFROTC), and after that, undergo a one year training program.
As well, a 3.4 or above GPA is required.
Technically you can try to apply as an 18 year old.
>>
>>15717776
I just want to know how many years does it take. It's 5 where I'm from.
>>
>>15717741
Literally years, and that's assuming that you qualify for training in the first place (for instance, graduating from the academy). Keep in mind that since the planes are expensive as hell, there's a keen interest in making sure that the guy sitting in the cockpit is mentally stable (is emotionally mature), physically able (has good reflexes, is not legally blind, can withstand g-forces) and intellectually capable (can make independent decisions, can make sound judgments of the situation) of operating said plane.

I've never understood the idea of "qualifying" to be a soldier. I remember reading an article about a female soldier saying most females don't cut it, saying "most men don't qualify for being soldiers, let alone women".

The fuck is she talking about? If you aren't crippled or outright insane, anyone can be told to shoot someone, and the only motivation you need is "they're gonna kill you if you don't kill them". You think europe cared about "qualification" besides minimal fitness requirements when they sent people into the meat grinder? Fuck no, they just needed more boots on the ground.

This whole "small professional army" shit is gonna go out the window once a REAL war starts and suddenly everyone needs tons of troops.

Most of being a soldier is just marching around and preparing for actual combat.

Other than that you need to make sure they don't panic or run off to do something stupid.

>>15725425
People have been saying that for a while but as a rule a commander isn't going to commit troops unless they've got a chance of winning. Otherwise it's all skirmish and scout, fighting small battles to wear down your opponent.
>>
>>15725393
Current combat that soldiers go through is far more complex and expensive than marching with all your buddies straight onto a beach.
>>
>>15714580
Disrespect the Machine more why don't you? Fucking perverts, always obsessing over inferior histrionic, psychotics.
>>
>>15725464
Because current combat isn't devolving into trench or open warfare. Urban warfare is a different beast, we used to just carpet-bomb the whole city, write off collateral damage with a shrug, and call it a day.
>>
>>15725451
>People have been saying that for a while but as a rule a commander isn't going to commit troops unless they've got a chance of winning.
Well yeah, but we also haven't had another Stalingrad yet. And let's face it, when you can fire missile volleys half a continent away, both sides can devastate each other's forces pretty fast.

See the problem with that is "a good chance of winning" does also have to be something considered "sane".

Verdun had a good chance of winning, it was planned on the basis of "if every strategy we attempt just turns the battle into a meat grinder, why don't we just intentionally create the bloodiest meat grinder possible to bleed France white?" The logic is sound, but the logic is running on the basis of insanity.

>I've never understood the idea of "qualifying" to be a soldier. I remember reading an article about a female soldier saying most females don't cut it, saying "most men don't qualify for being soldiers, let alone women".

Many soldiers (both men and women) have figured out ways to game the systems that determine if they still qualify as being in fighting form. One example I can think of of the top of my head is overweight soldiers influencing the body mass index by overdeveloping their neck muscles so they would not be marked as overweight.

>The fuck is she talking about? If you aren't crippled or outright insane, anyone can be told to shoot someone, and the only motivation you need is "they're gonna kill you if you don't kill them".

There is far more to being a soldier than shooting people. Fighting is a very small very exciting part of a soldier's life more often than not a soldier is doing a lot of very boring very exhausting stuff.

Not everyone can march 10 miles carrying 2/3rd's their own weight in gear.

I don't see the problem. You throw enough bodies at the enemy, and you'll at the very least wear them down if not outright overwhelm them. You don't need much training for that. As British Expeditionary Force supreme commander Douglas "Butcher" Haig once said, "soldiers exist to be killed". Or my preferred quote, quantity has a quality all its own.
>>
>>15726653
>You throw enough bodies at the enemy, and you'll at the very least wear them down if not outright overwhelm them
Not at any point past WW1 you dummy.
Hell, even in WW1 quanitity didn't mean anything. Artillery fire and machine gun emplacements rekt almost all straightforward advances into enemy territory.
Now imagine the vast multitude of force multipliers we have today, from self loading rifles to jet fighters to satellite and drone surveillance. This fantasy that muh low n slow obsolete shitbox can defeat the enemy if we just make enough of them is just that, a fantasy.
>>

>Complete meme.

I did a lot of reading on the Ostfront, and Stalin's "not one step back" order made it so the frontline's only strategy was to prevent german advance no matter what. And he ensured it by putting in place a secondary line whose sole purpose was to shoot anyone in the main line that tried to retreat or defect.
>>
>>15726689
They disbanded the regular blocking regiments in 1942 because they did not work.
Despite Order. 227, the Germans captured even more territory, and reached all the way to Stalingrad.
>>

>They disbanded the regular blocking regiments in 1942 because they did not work.

They didn't work because the Germans would shoot OVER the main line to hit the firing squads to encourage retreat, not because they failed as a morale enforcer.
>>
>>15726653
They rejected plenty of men from doing service in WWI and WWII. They did not have super lax standards, even for a meat grinder job like infantry.

I never saw Enemy at the Gates, I'm referring to intances like where a soviet commander was told to get his men across a river when they were landlocked people who couldn't swim, so he chose to just let most of them drown in attempting to cross than to disobey orders from higher up to get them across the river quickly (too quickly to have a temporary bridge built).
