***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

How do I budget myself in terms of Gunpla? I'm thinking I'd like to get a Mega Size Unicorn, a RG Unicorn and a Pale Rider. The Pale Rider is potentially time-limited, but what's the window going to be like on the Unicorns? Will the RG (and Mega) be available into the forseeable future barring temporary shortages as people clamor to get them first?

>>15713103
If you order online there will never be shortages. They will just get more expensive.
>>
>>15713103
Why would you want both RG and Mega Size Unicorn?
In terms of stock, RG Unicorn will definitely last the longest so save that for last if you need to. It'll be expensive initially, but there will be a dip in price, like what happened with the RG Sinanju. Pale Rider is the most limited so get that first.
>>
>>15713124
Well yeah, the expense is what worries me. I assume RG Unicorns will be produced long enough I could get one for regular list price a few months down the road, but should I pull the trigger on a Mega Size right now? I want to get a PG in the future eventually so I can have the entire SD, HG, RG, MG, PG, Mega collection of Unicorns.

It's a little different, a couple different pieces, extra trigger and emotive hands. I'd say the zaku 2 standard kit is superior to the char kit desu.
>>
>>15713103
RGs tend to be restocked frequently, while Bandai usually takes a while in between making more Mega Sizes.
After the P-Bandai sale ends, Pale Riders can usually be found in-stock at sites like Mandarake, but pricing fluctuates. If you get it for a decent price it shouldn't cost much more than paying the normal P-Bandai+middleman fees.

I was planning on getting the master airbursh kit, but has a bit of luck and came by a hobbyshop while driving around my old hometown.
The guy there heavily recommended me Paasche.

Anyone familiar with this brand?
>>
>>15713392
Similar problem here, I'm not confident that the small can of grey I bought is going to be enough for what I need it for.
>>
Probably a dumb question, but why do Bandai use different kinds of plastic for the frames and the outer armour?
I find the frame plastic is easier to clean up nubs and is a bit softer, while the outer armor is always a lot harder. Why is this?
>>
>>15713436
Are you sure you're not just posing them weird and it only looks that way?
>>
>>15713516
You mean for RGs? Anyway whatever it is, the type of plastic is always embossed on the runner and labeled in the instruction's parts list, typically PS, ABS, PE or PP
>>
>be building gusion rebake full city

>>
>>15713516
Polystyrene is hard but not very flexible so if I had to hazard a guess they wanted a plastic that doesn't stress as easily from bending for the frames.
>>
>>15713518
Yeah, for each build the body is leaning towards its left. I've been messing around with the pose for some time now and no matter how I pose it, it comes off as the right being longer left. I posed the question because I've only had two kits with this issue so far.

What should I expect to spend to get into Airbrushing, $130-$150?
>>
>>15713610
depends on how good of an airbrush you want.
>>
>>15713559
Why are you building in the dark?
>>
>>15713598
It's a bit of a rougher build, but about par for what you'd expect a 2004 kit to be. You'll need proper tools, you can't just improvise like you could with a more modern kit like IBO that has thin runners. Aside from that, it goes together pretty alright and is a solid enough kit. The articulation is what you'd expect and the props are neat, but the beam sabers are a solid unpainted piece.

P-Bandai makes me sad because it tends to be all the really cool kits that you'd want to buy, but then they fucking milk you for every penny you've got and the kits become impossible to find if they're anything really popular.
>>
>>15713647
>Actually thinking that John Bandai cares about you
lol
>>
>>15713588
Yeah the pigments make them slightly different. Clear PS is more brittle and dark colored PS will have stress marks more easily.

PS is weaker than ABS but it's Gunpla's "default" plastic because it accepts paint more readily. This is especially important when you're trying to push less toxic paint to kids.
>>
>>15713630

Anon, this was one of the guys recommending airbrushes to you. I found some helpful YouTube info for you regarding the Talon. When I was starting out I felt that videos helped a lot to understand how to disassemble the brush correctly. If you're interested, give them a look!

>>
>>15713797
Humidity or being too close to the part often can mean problems. Did you feel that might have been the cause? Those are always possible causes that make things go wrong. If it was with an airbrush then be sure your PSI was fine too, so you weren't harshly blasting it or letting it dry before touching the piece.
>>
>>15713812
Spray can.
Doesn't really feel humid to me, though it is raining outside.
In any case I'm soaking the pieces over night in rubbing alcohol, and redoing the paint tomorrow.
>>
>>15713807
Thank you very much!
>>
>>15713727
Ah, my main in SDGO
>>
>>15713820
When doing coating it's very important to consider humidity. I check weather online when I intend to spray. I've read varying reports on what is the "correct" level to spray at, but I have never sprayed when it's above like 70 percent. If it rained very recently that might have been causing it. Do a quick run onto Google weather just in case next time. Don't forget to soak your bottles in warm water first, it lets the paint inside work easier, something about the pigments st the bottom.

>>15713820
Not a problem. A word of advice, don't use art store paints. Get actual modeling paint, and thinner too. If you've got a local hobby shop you should find paint easily, then you're able to see what correctly thins it out. And for the love of god wear a respirator, most every paint is toxic.

Actually, we just use the paper-craft file of Rx-78 ver Ka we found on internet. Then scale it up, and use foam paper(don't know what it called in English) instead of normal paper-craft paper.
It's not that hard actually, just required a lot of word.

>>

Did you try and rip the decal off to reposition it? I've done it before to try and realign them. If you do it alot the decals wont stick.

No. With the Char Zaku some of the stickers are a bit off, i fired and forget with that one, once they stuck they were stuck for good in my eyes, plus i wanted to avoid them losing their stickiness, on the Gouf they all stuck well, except for the spike ones which just keep getting out of the circle, that one HAS lost sticking because i keep trying to press them down

410 vs 410A? Is there a big difference?
>>
>>15715441
Bandai has little faith in Twilight Axis, it's why it's like 30 minutes long total, is straight to youtube, and has only one mass retail kit (and 2 other designs as P-Bandai). Look at how little coverage Twilight Axis had gotten over the last few months compared to Thunderbolt S2 and the Build Fighters OVA. It's an excuse to sell a few new kits and keep some animators busy.

It will take something that turns fans against Gundam as a whole, like the initial reveal of the 2007 Transformers movie designs, to kill Gundam for good.

The implication is that the Mega Size kit will be unable to transform (or even simply be assembled) to Unicorn mode. Mega Size kits are very simplistic so a gimmick like transforming would never be available- they just want to make extra clear that it is a DESTROY MODE Unicorn and not a Unicorn mode in any way.
That said Unicorn seems really popular so I wouldn't rule out a Mega Size Unicorn mode.

I unevenly sanded the RG Exia's mouthplate, which led me to sand it too much when I tried to fix the asymmetry.
I ordered an entire new kit because it was cheaper than ordering a replacement part.

Sizes meaning scales? You can always visit Dalong.net which conveniently catalogs most every HG release for the past 20 yeas and is starting to do old models as well. They are each compared to a cigarette box for scale, so you can get a feel for how high they each stand.
>>
>>15716621
Why the fuck can't people just break out putty or styrene at this point. It's way cheaper than buying a whole fucking model. I don't understand why so many immediately say "well it's fucked beyond repair" at the slightest issue. You're in a modeling hobby, it requires effort at times.
>>
>>15716652

I dunno, the transformation does nothing for me although the normal form doesn't look too bad.

>>

And? People build tiny details as small as finger nails onto 1/144 scale models all the time. And a smaller part means less work overall because you're physically remodeling less surface.
>>
>>15716715
I admire your dedication to the craft, but the fact of the matter is that I'm a beginner, and am not nearly capable enough to remodel a tiny nub of plastic that I can barely see.
You ask a doodler to paint a portrait.

plus I don't own a table mounted magnifying glass, which the people that you mentioned use.

Well there's the RX-78-2. People recommend the 2.0, the Origin, and 3.0. I recommend the 2.0 for anime accuracy and ease of construction though I personally prefer the 3.0.

There's also the Jesta and the Guntank, and the Guncannon too, though that one's rather old.

How are you getting on with your hund? That chest section and arms with all the wiring and pistons can be quite tricky.

Any ideas for a paint scheme? Its Quite rare to see ma.k fans these days
>>
>>15717044
It's my first Ma.K kit. Actually, I saw a bunch of them at wonfes four years ago and instantly fell in love, but only recently realized what those kits I saw back then were called.
It's now fully assembled, but I want to get some softer putty than what I have right now to add texture to the larger surfaces and close seamlines at the same time. Camo patterns with soft, airbrushed borders tend to look really bad to me so I'm considering going for a wintery color scheme with sharp borders but little contrast between them. And then, of course, a bunch of weathering.

It really was pretty tough getting the wires to go in right in one direction while attaching the chest section in another direction, but it's all looking more or less stable now.
Sadly I've been procrastinating on two other painting projects while assembling this guy so I'm not moving on to the painting quite yet. I am certainly looking forward to it, though.

Reborns' "transformations" are the best. Loosen up its pants, turn around and squat down and it's the "fire support mode". Pop up your collar, stand up straight and it's your "general purpose/close range" mode. Now it just unbutton its sleeves, sits down, ponder its life decision and it becomes a mobile artillery unit.

3D printing, especially the kind an ordinary guy can afford to buy, just isn't there quite yet. Even higher quality printed parts have ridges, occasional warping, stiffer plastic, etc. A old experianced modeler at my local club got access to a good corporate 3d printer and made some parts and said that the printed parts were a massive pain in the ass to clean up and still didn't look quite right in the end. Even Bandai's own 3D printed display prototypes often look a bit off even after cleanup and painting.

Give it another decade.

Can someone recommend me a place to buy cheap gunpla kits? I'm looking for outdated or bootleg would be fine. My son and I just started to build together and I'd rather have him start with some cheaper kits.
>>
>>15717608
Plenty of cheap stuff on Mandarake.
>>
>>15717608
Amazon or various Japanese sites like HLJ or 1999, simply filter by price. With Amazon there tends to be a range of JG for anywhere from 8-13 buck that are serviceable especially considering you want a "starter" model that doesn't have many bells and whistles.
>>
>>15713538
>tfw you accidentally panel line your ring finger with a pour-type gundam marker
>>
>>15717608

Banzai-hobby if you have customs to dodge.
>>
>>15717608
import if you're going to order at least 3 HGs or more than that, customs and import tax isn't worth it otherwise.
Mandarake is the absolute best site for cheap kits since it's all "used". Thankfully in Japan "used" just means someone bought it, never opened it, then sold it to a physical Mandarake store because they weren't interested in it anymore. Just avoid anything that has a massive red warning in the item description as that means there actually is something broken or missing.

they just need a good sanding
I've worked with an abs printer before and shit came out fine
it was a bit bumpy and brittle but that's because it layers on plastic like toothpaste
just make the part like 1/32" (or half of however thin the printer prints) thicker and sand it flat

or even better, light sanding then coat it with putty to flatten it
>>
Hey can I spray topcoat indoors?
>>
>>15717766
Of course, don't forget to breathe in as much as you can

If your kitchen stovetop has an airvent turn that thing up to as high as it will go. Open up every window in your kitchen, if possible get some fans set up to suck air out. Set up shop right above your stovetop and start painting. Once you're done topcoating close every door to the room and put a wet towel at the bottom to block anything coming out of there. Order a pizza and wait 1-3 days for you kitchen to be decontaminated.
