It was great, until it stopped being great. It also got an anime adaptation, and the ending to that adaptation arguably should have been the best place to end the story. Especially since the mangaka seems to have decided to abandon the project mostly, after making bank from anime merchandise and royalties.

The art, design, music and mecha are all top tier. The actual writing and characterization let it down

The OVA series is really good. That's all I care about it.

I don't think it really got "bad" per se after the Borcuse fight, but that fight--and most of what led up to it--was definitely the height of the series. And both Borcuse and Girge were some of the most interesting characters in the manga, so I think having them leave made a lot of people give up on the series I know I put it on hold for a long time after Borcuse died anyway
