Are there any mecha shows where the protagonist actually has a position of authority in the military instead of being a low ranking pilot?

What?
Mecha is about the kid in the robot, not the adult in the captain's chair.
Code Geass kind of counts, I suppose.

Majority of mecha they aren't even that, they are usually the special pilot chosen usually by a third party to pilot the robot. Also what you are proposing is incredibly stupid since no leader should put themselves out on the front lines of battle.

A true leader leads from the frontlines and shoulders the same burden as his comrades. As if anyone would listen to a dog who sits at the back barking orders and never risks his own life. Retard.

Any real life military? Most armies in history?

A true leader like that is easily killed and his people are left lost without any guidance.
Kira Yamato is made an admiral in GSD.

That only counts when you get to battlegroup level IC. Below that, you're all expendable and you're in the field with your troopers, from 2nd Lt to Major.
