Pacific Rim is literally my favorite movie, and as soon as they announced John Boyega as Stacker Pentacost's son just around when Star Wars came out. Then I saw they tossed out the original script, and the new Jaeger designs, and it just confirms everything I suspected.

My problem with the new Jaegers is that they're too nimble. The best part of the original set were that they were heavy motherfuckers that hit HARD and their designs reflected that. They had weight and presence that made them almost believable These Bionicle ninja things with their spins and flips just take you out of the whole thing.

I wonder if Bandai had a hand in designing these Jaegers? They're definitely more toy-like compared to GD and co.

I know the Jaegers in the trailer are just CG representations, but nothing rustles my jimmies more than giant robots that move like normal-sized martial artists. One of the great things about PacRim was that the scale of the Jaegers was well-conveyed in their movement and the way inertia affects all the component parts as they move. Hopefully the actual mechs will still at least -feel- colossal.

What made Pacific Rim stand out to me was how lived in and grimy everything felt. Old mecha were dangerous to pilot, Kaiju were a mess to battle, most weapons were about functionality, looks coming second. Now they just look super sleek, pristine, extremely humanoid commercial robots. On top of that, Where are the Kaiju (Or whatever monstrous threat appears in this film). They were a big part of why the marketing and pre-movie fiction was so interesting for the first movie.

I was of the impression Boyega actually salvaged the film after Universal was going to reject it, due to having been a big fan of the first one and having some freshly-minted pull from Star Wars to use on it. He's got a producer credit on it.

If the movie picks up before a new breach was opened, then all the Jaegers would look perfect and clean. None of them have seen any combat. But its more likely that they will act like giant power rangers, flipping and cartwheeling into action.

That was done because it was easier and cheaper to make the CGI look good.

But also because del Taco wanted a dark, rusty-gothic look. So chances are there will be daytime fights.

Honestly they did the best they could. Giant robots are hard to animate to seem realistic. TF uses shitty camera angles and robo kibble. PR used dark lighting and water to cut corners. The rain and half submerged scenes were used to the full to help convey size and scale.

The most difficult part in dealing with giant robots is lighting and reflections of fuckhueg panels. Robo kibble is one way to deal with this, rain droplets and nighttime is another.

I thought it was fine. I like darker settings because it creates more option to play with the lighting. Despite having a ton of underwater / at night scenes, pacific rim was a very colorful movie. The monsters were colorful, the cockpits were colorful, the jaegers themselves were colorful. It was a pleasure to watch, eye candy really.

In quantity yes, but the amount of spray and surface area covered is going to be worse. This means more space to cover with decontamination and higher odds of blue splattering far off and not quarantined in time to stop contamination from spreading.

But honestly the bigger problem is it just seems like it would be really inefficient and slow for Titan Redeemer to kill a Kaiju so it's gonna take many bludgeons to kill a Kaiju meaning more and more spastic swinging of it's mace hand. Really doesn't help that the damn thing lacks a shoulder joint making it questionable if it can honestly kill anything.

I get the impression that different drafts of the story had different ideas about Blue, or possibly some versions without it, so the final product is muddled as to what it does/how it works/if it matters.
