The welfare memoria cards are really some of the worst cards in the game so far. Only worth collecting if you're a completionist or if you don't have a 5* memoria card.

To be fair, you're just going to do the event mostly for the awakening gems and that 5* memoria does give you an event for 5 stones.

Can't disagree with that part.

It's mostly that they started with Saber Lily which had the stats of a 3.5 star despite being a 4 star. Welfare servants and event CEs have gone a long way since then and are not an entire tier worse than the gacha equivalents.

The only capable thing she did was to jump ship because she saw that Maria didn't have the stomach for war. From then on out she was on someone else's wild ride, from Kirika's to Hibiki's to Fine's to then back to Kirika and back to Fine's for the finale.

Nice strawman but most of the time when people say translations are shit they say why. You clearly don't understand how localization works. Do you actually think "Robotnik" is a TRANSLATION of "Eggman"? It doesn't have to be a 1:1 translation as long as it conveys the feeling of the source material. In Heavenrend's case, it's a cool name for a sword that has an oriental feel to it, and that's more than enough.

ZEIK TUVAI

>>
And I'd like to add that despite the circlejerk going on about Wild Arms translations here sometimes, Zeikfried is a perfectly valid localization. "Siegfried" is an actual hero and having his name for a villain is inappropriate and might confuse western audiences familiar with him, and changing his name to "Zeikfried" keeps the general sound of his name while making it alien enough to make it seem villainous.

>>15707050
That is a part of localization! Some words don't sound as good in one language as in another, and the goal of localization is to give a non-native audience the same feelings the native audience would feel! THIS IS THE ENTIRE POINT!
>>
>>15707025
Problem with that mainly is that people can still hear "Ame no Habakiri" all the time. And some start complaining because they don't want proper nouns like that translated.

In this case I can kind of understand it being a bridge too far though, because it was basically already written in romaji. It's the same way that concert screen back in G that said "Tsubasa X Maria", you wouldn't want them putting in "Wing" over Tsubasa would you?

>you wouldn't want them putting in "Wing" over Tsubasa would you?
If Symphogear were, say, to be aired on Toonami, I would EXPECT the names to be changed.

Do you think "Rick Hunter" was a result of mistranslation? No, it was an active choice made to consider the target audience.

Given how the meaning of Tsubasa's name comes into play in GX, it would actually be BETTER for the name to be translated, unless you want "TL note wing is tsubasa in Japanese" at the top of the screen.

Fansubs are mostly for anime fans anyway so names of people remain the same, but with weapons it's better to prioritize the cool feel of the name, because that's what matters more.

This is very common in localization, where a name which might work in one language is changed in another where it gains different meanings or nuances. I fail to see how this is any way surprising. Changing it to Heavenrend because "some people might not look Ame no Habakiri up" is retarded. If they seriously give that little of a shit, then Ame-no-Habakiri or Heavenrend would have made no difference.
And making matters worse, it isn't like the original was just referencing a myth like it often happens in manga/anime. This is supposedly the real motherfucking Ame-no-Habakiri. Changing it to some generic sword name takes that away.

Yes, in an actual localization process that could very well be brought up and used as a valid reason to justify changing its name. I'm glad to see that you're beginning to understand. In a show with shit like Gungnir, Ichaival, Kadingir, Nehushtan, Airgetlam, Nephilim, Shenshou Jing, Dainsleif, Daurdabla, and Antikythera, why make the sole exception for the Japanese-sounding artifact in a Japanese show set in japan with the majority of the cast being Japanese?

Quite the contrary, things that are overly foreign have consistently shown to not perform as well with the mass market as things that are made with a domestic audience in mind.

Why else do you think Treehouse and other localization companies still exist? Have you played any Japanese video games released in English lately? They are ALL heavily localized. In some of the niche ones they do keep Japanese names in, but even then other things are heavily localized and the fact that you don't notice is just testament to how well they're done.

a good dub always beats a good sub, and I was more making a statement about desperate weaboos who think that the sub experience is the superior, close to the original intention, experience. It's simply not the case and any translation will always be divorced from the original experience that the native audience will have. There is nothing wrong with preferring a sub because the dub is bad or nonexistent, but the notion that a sub is inherently superior because it's more accurate or more true to the original intent is false. I also brought up the Miyazaki thing because people often underestimate the value of the mis en scene and dismiss the reading of subs as a minor inconvenience, when it really does detract from the art of directing the eye and taking in the full picture. Take the fact that the translations are always a divergence from what a native speaker would experience and the fact that subs detract from the visual experience, and the notion that some weaboos have about the superiority of subs falls apart.

Its like preferring honorifics in translations because it gives the sense of being more Japanese despite not accurately portraying the nuance in a conversation.

For one, when did we get from "fansubbing" an unofficial service provided by people on the internet so other people on the internet can understand the show, to a full-blown movie adaptation?
Actually, that summarized it all right there, Commie aren't remaking Symphogear or creating a new intellectual property based on Symphogear, they are TRANSLATING Symphogear.
They should try to change as little of the setting and characters as possible. A reference to a Japanese legend, a REAL Japanese legend, is completely lost in favor of a generic RPG-like name.

I prefer subs because I want to hear the original VAs acting, because almost invariably its better. Being the original cast, they are usually paid better, and work much closer with the creator to get the acting they want. A dub is just shlepped off to some other company who doesn't give a shit, and the same usually goes for the actors. A dub can be good, but for it to surpass the original in care and passion is simply a fantasy.

Japanese names being changed to other Japanese names could be a matter of pronunciation or even a system issue, the length of the names being too long for a field which is a common problem in game translation.

Anglophone names to other anglophone names is what I mentioned before, the impression a name gives the audience. The Japanese are especially notorious at giving character names that might sound ridiculous to a native speaker, like naming a female character "Charles".

>>
>>15707376
See, you're trying to say there's reason behind it, but these are the same people that changed his brother's name from Leon to Leo.
There is no reason.
We're to the point now where Severa's original name Selena had to be used as her alias in Fates because her "real" alias Luna, which was supposed to tie with her moon theme, was already taken by a skill. Her names are this weird overlapping flowchart for no reason.
>>
>>15707382
But shit like MtG, Buddyfight, Vanguard and Force of Will can have references to religious shit and no one cares. Sephira Torah Grammaton was changed to Zefraath. What the fuck is an ath?
>>
>>15707382
It's not about confusion, it's about the nuances felt by the audience.

A Japanese audience seeing Siegfried and Ame no Habakiri would go "oh it's some foreign knight dude" and "oh it's that heavenly super sword". Left as is, a western audience would go "wait, why is this villain named after a hero? That's odd" and "oh it's some kind of Japanese thing, whatever". Changing the names makes it so that the western audience goes "oh it's some weird foreign knight guy" "oh it's a cool heavenly sword". This is the entire purpose of localization.

>>15707387
Behind MARX, certainly (ever heard of something called the Cold War?). Those others sound like they were due to technical problems; Leon cutting out a single letter especially seems like it might have been due to an overflow in a dialogue box somewhere. Not localization there, just lazy work.
>>
>>15707387
Selena is still related to moon shit though; it's tied to Selene, who's a moon goddess.
>>
>>15707387
Yeah, Fates is one weird case. When I first heard about its localization cleaning a lot of more dark or risqué themes I thought Nintendo was just afraid of getting a M-rating, but there are several instances of changing for the sake of it, and most of them don't really make sense or point to any motive.
I'm just glad the newer game wasn't handed to the same people.
>>
>>15707405
A lot of localization companies in the US change names just as inside jokes, because they want a character named after a real person they know or their character in an MMORPG or something. It's very unprofessional. And then they just spout bullshit about localisation after the fact to justify it.

>(ever heard of something called the Cold War?)
We already established this is irrelevant. They change names arbitrarily, and saying that a name only four characters long getting shortened to three characters is to fit text boxes but a four character/five character name getting changed to six just completely ruins your only point.

>>15707404
But there is no moon theme because Severa is not related to it. The idea with her alias is that it was supposed to be "moon" and "another name for moon" to make it more obvious. Instead, the english version of her first game named her "harsh". So now she's "harsh" and "moon."
>>
>>15707405

>>

>and saying that a name only four characters long getting shortened to three characters is to fit text boxes but a four character/five character name getting changed to six just completely ruins your only point.

There's more than one people called Marx you know. Fuck, there's people called Marx to this day who have nothing to do with that one Marx. It's not like Hitler's case where pretty much everyone who shared the name went and changed it.

Either way, if they had to change it to avoid triggering retards, Xander is still a retarded choice. Mark would work way better not only because the names share a root, but because both have the same meaning. If the translator thought Mark sounds too commonplace, then Marcus. Xander is just picking a random name and replacing.
>>
>>15707425
>Mark would work way better not only because the names share a root,
Mark is the name of a character in FE Awakening (but localized to "Morgan" because the character can also be female; See what I was talking about in >>15707320 ?). The fanbase presumably uses the Japanese names sometimes regardless so changing it to Mark would cause unnecessary confusion.
>>
>>15707403
I say if the target audience of Yugioh can handle Japanese Mythology on a Japanese Game even though they went through shit like this:
>>15707398
>>15707367
Then people ACTIVELY looking for subs on this show would do fine.
And you are, again, seriously over-estimating the effect having a Japanese name on a Japanese show.
A great example is how in the US, most people complain endlessly about this localization garbage, while in countries that don't pull this shit, it's never missed.
Here in Brazil, we got all of the original names for DBZ, Yu-yu Hakusho, Card Captor Sakura, the works, and they were just as big here. Even "Mr. Satan", and all of the subtext in Sakura was completely intact. No one cared.
At least no more than U.S. parents trying to get Pokemon banned for promoting evolution.
>>

>I said dialogue box (as in the text box for dialogue), not field (places in stat screens).
I'm well aware of what you said, and what I said still applies. Hell, that's what I wrote it in mind for.
We also know that, because of the Belka/Saizo support, they can add or remove any more boxes they need with ease, so dialogue limits aren't a problem.
>>

That's also valid for a name already picked. And there are more related names one can pick before just strapping everything and going for something else entirely.

Not to mention that characters from different games in a franchise sharing a name usually doesn't generate that much noise in comunication.
>>
>>15707432
>Mark is the name of a character in FE Awakening
Ah, my filthy secondary. Mark is the name of a character from FE7 who Mark in FEA is a reference to. The name was changed because the name was already taken, but Treehouse did not understand the significance of the name being the same.
>>
>>15707441
US localization practices are completely fucking insane to most people looking from an outside perspective, yes.
>>
>>15707439

That's just my impression, and the actual translators presumably had their own reasons which may or may not resemble mine. In any case, they clearly reached the same conclusion as me, that "Marcus" is unsuitable as it doesn't match the character.

>Most people I know named Gabriel are idiots, but that doesn't mean I should change the name when translating something because "Gabriel sounds like a dumb person's name".
If everyone on the team agrees entirely, then yes. Additionally if the name is for, say, a devil worshipper, then the name would have to be changed for fear of offending Christians since the name is shared with an archangel.

I'm personally against that but I do know for a fact that it's a common issue brought up in the industry.
>>
>>15707482
Anon, are you Finé?
It's the only way I can rationalize this irrational fear of different languages not feeling 100% familiar to someone to the point it'd be ok to change a character's name for some completely inocuous reason
>>
>>15707494
I'm sure some people are about to blast you for this anon, but I'll put you down lightly.

fanfiction.net is not a good place to gauge series popularity. fanfiction.net is not a good place for anything. fanfiction.net is not even a good place for fanfic once ao3 existed.
>>
>>15707511
We're talking about names and other bigger scope things, not sentence-to-sentence translation. They are not the same thing.
>>
>>15707509
Then it would be up to the people higher up to decide, though I can tell you that in the case of console video games that aren't rated mature it's 90% going to be changed.
>>
>>15707509
Lilithmon, an evil character, got renamed to Laylamon. Localization makes no sense.
>>
>>15707515
It's good to find fics of older series.
>>
>>15707511
No one is arguing for 100% 1:1 translations, just that changing a proper noun, even more so when it's in reference to a real-world myth, is not a good translation.
I'll say it again, it's making reference to a myth, part of Japanese fucking culture. It isn't even making "reference" to it, technically. It's the very same sword
>>
>>15707518
This may come as a surprise to you, but names also have meanings and give people impressions.

Symphogear is written by the same person as Wild Arms so I'll use an example from there.

There are two characters in WA2 named Toka and Ge. They are lizard people. "Tokage" in Japanese means "lizard".

You are saying that their names should be left as "Toka" and "Ge" even though there is literally no benefit to doing so at all aside from "that's what the original names are", and it fails to convey the original meaning that they're just joke characters whose names spell out "lizard" together.
>>
>>15707511
>This is part of conveying meaning,
But you are not conveying, you are intepreting what you think the meaning behind the original author's decisions is and what he actually meant. That is for the audience to decide.

>Do you realize that what you're asking for is for people to translate "ohayou gozaimasu" to "I say, it's terribly early" instead of "good morning"?
You're either being very dishonest or very stupid.
That is hardly a comparable example to the rest of this discussion.
>>
>>15707529
Your reaction to the second quote shows that you clearly have no knowledge at all of the Japanese language and really shouldn't be trying to discuss it.
>>
>>15707526
>A mythological weapon is the same as a pun

Okay bud.
>>
>>15707529
He's right though? お早う literally means "it's early" and gozaimasu just makes it polite.
>>
>>15707536
I'm saying that the entire point is getting what the audience feels to be the same.

I'm assuming he wasn't criticizing the correctness of the translation as much as the fact that the translation of basic greetings has fuck all to do with names.
>>
Additionally, a lot of this argument is coming from hindsight, with knowledge of what Ame no Habakiri is. Stop to imagine what it would be like for someone encountering the name without any context, with it suddenly being spat out at them. A Japanese viewer immediately knows what it is, while a western viewer would just be confused; Changing it to Heavenrend at least gives them some clue as to what it could be.

>>15707548
>>15707539 explained it perfectly fine.
>>
>>15707526
1- They do that in most games, that is a shitty Japanese pun. Also, they are minor characters
2-So now keeping accurate to the meaning of the name is important? Because there is this sword from Japanese mythology, called Ame-no-Habakiri, that is from an actual Japanese Myth. You wouldn't believe what some dudes translating it on the internet did: They changed it to "Heavenred" and it lost the entire legend behind it with it.
>>15707540
And I'd argue it doesn't. "Heavenrend" sounds like some generic name from some mistranslated NES-era RPG.
Ame-no-Habakiri, just from being foreign, already calls attention to the name.
>>
>>15707539
He is right, but that example is on a much smaller scope. There's no question about what the intention of the author was in such a simple phrase.
What he's advocating for is interpreting and projecting his own impressions about the work as a whole to the audience. This kind of translation is irresponsible because it kills any possible ambiguity or room for interpretation.
>>
>>15707553
A Japanese viewer (or a western one, for that matter) doesn't know what Igalima or, depending on how deep their lack of knowledge runs, even Gungnir means.
Why is Ame-no-Habakiri such a special case?
>>
>>15707554
>2-So now keeping accurate to the meaning of the name is important
I never said that.

>1- They do that in most games, that is a shitty Japanese pun. Also, they are minor characters
This is irrelevant. The entire point is that the names are translated so that the target audience has the same feelings as the native audience. I've repeated this multiple times.

>Ame-no-Habakiri, just from being foreign, already calls attention to the name.
Missing the point once again. See above.
>>
>>15707560
>A Japanese viewer (or a western one, for that matter) doesn't know what Igalima (...) means
Then leaving the name as it is would be fine, as both audiences have the same impressions of it.

Heavenrend is a name in english, on a Japanese setting, at best, people are going to make fun of it.
At worst, people are going to think it's made up since an acient japanese sword with an english name is just ridiculous.
Most likely, they are going to google and find out that this idiotic change was made by Commie for fuck all.
If it's a Japanese name, on a Japanese setting, people would be much more inclined to think it has something to do with Japan.
>>15707575

A lot of Americans still prefer the subbed experience because they know they are much less likely to get shit like this.

This reminds me of the threads we had in the months after GX finished airing, where a select few anons would end up arguing once a week on things barely cursory to Symphogear, and end up arguing literal semantics for the sake of having the last word.

Industry standards change and adapt. Holding so tightly to procedures and norms often seen as outdated is not the healthiest position to have.

I can see where you are coming from when you talk about a Japanese person being able to understand what Ame-no-Habakiri is by hearing the name, but it is not that simple.

First, let's assume they know the name by heart because of it's origin in myth, In this case he know what Ame-no-Habakiri is, but might not know its exact meaning (as it a very archaic word. It's like when we see soime term used in medieval times, we might know what it is but now it's exact meaning). If we're agreeing incental knowledge comes from either the myth or stuff that used the same source (such as a videogame), you shouldn't come up with your own unique pun-y translation, you have to look up what the mythical item is referred to in English. In the case of Ame-no-Habakiri, it's such a niche part of Japanese myth that you will often find it as the more known name Totsuka-no-Tsurugi, often localized as Sword of Totsuka (even though Totsuka is just a term that describes its lenght, not a proper name). People familiar with Japanese myth may know what a Sword of Totsuka is just like a Japanese person would, so I'd argue that is a better translation. Better than Heavenrend at least.

If what you are saying is that a nip knows what the name means even if they don't know the origin, that doesn't change the fact it has origin in myth. You shouldn't come up with your own but use a translation that conveys meaning. Probably a good one for Ame-no-Habakiri would be Heavenly Snake Slayer, or something along these lines. This isn't overly literal, but also conveys both the meaning a Japanese would extract from the word and its mythological context.
>>
>>15707627
Flinging insults doesn't help you disprove me. You are not wrong, but you are misguided. Your industry standards are not synonymous with good translation, which is what people here are asking for. They might be synonymous with good localization, but mixing the two up (intentionally or not) only causes the gigantic shitshow we just saw.
With that said discussion died down and a few people will hate me for making this post, so I'm also giving up.
>>
>>15707627
>Opinion.
So is your opinion that changing it to Heavenrend helps.
The point that "Heavenrend" severs the connection to Japanese Mythology isn't. Even more so when referencing real-world mthology is a recurring theme of the series.
"Every myth could have been covert aliens with bullshit technology" is one of the coolest things in the franchise.
You literally broke an essential part of it because you thought... I don't even know why you even would.
Again, this isn't a made-up legend, it's an ancient Japanese sword, what would changing it's name to a western one even accomplish other than sever that connection?
