Ah Robocop, 50% homme, 50% machine, 100% flic. The Paris metro system was plastered by Robocop's poster when the film (the first one) came out. I thought it was mostly a stupid film but its worse excesses have come to pass.
Americans do live in a fully privatised world where even their government at all levels is for sale to the highest private bidder. The only problem is we don't have a ROBOCOP to protect us against this modern band of robber barons or against other policemen who kill citenzens because they don't like their skin color.

The original Robocop is my all-time favorite action movie. Aside from being pretty awesome in general, its themes still resonate pretty loudly today, which tells you something about American culture.

A friend of mine once described it as "a dumb movie made by smart people."

Great movie. A true R18 classic.

TV and cinema has been killing and resurrecting cops since 60's, but Robocop was the real big step in production terms. It's also incredible how japs love it and emulate the franchise with Jiban (and vice-versa in Robocop 3 and even Robocop 2014).

I wouldn't say Murphy's characterization was undone. They tried to focus on the realities of his situation and his mindset following that. The real problem is that it goes completely unresolved after Cain becomes RoboCop 2, to the point Murphy just disappears before the final act.

My only concern would be that a six year old child might not be intellectually developed enough to fully appreciate Robocop. If I had a kid, I'd wait until he had a decent understanding of cop films, portrayals of robots in science fiction, and certainly the push-back against the soulless business culture of the '80s. I'd certainly make sure he'd read something like "Bicentennial Man" or seen some relevant Data-centric TNG episodes so that he could fully appreciate what happens to Murphy.
>>
>>15715647
But if you show them Robocop when they're a kid they'll first just like it for the action however as time goes on and they're exposed to more they'll appreciate the movie more and more. It becomes the gift that keeps on giving.

The day when people have their brains put into a robot body is coming.

Stephen Hawking is an example of what is to come. A mind able to communicate through technology. We need to have robotics used with amputation patients used as a connection to just a removed brain.

The main need/want for this is in the elderly. Those elderly people with minds unaffected by age, but have weak/dying/diseased bodies will be willing to have their mind pout into robots. The first years will be an ugly mess, lots of brains dying because of the failure of connection, a lot that do succeed will feel horrified of their new robotic body, all most of their 5 senses stripped of them, some will go insane, and rage-fueled sprees of destruction. Once the operation has been done for a good number of years, more successes, it will become as commonplace as laser eye surgery, people will be able to live 500+ years in a robot body if the brain is kept intact. By then, we will have organic robotics that will be very close to human bodies, giving those brains their 5 senses back.
>>

Robocop 2 had a few good moments, but on the whole it was a significant step down from the original.

Robocop 3 was just ridiculous kiddy schlock.

Because I saw cool robot dude on the cover and my mom was far from being the typical soccer mom. I mean, I was already watching chinese dudes beating and slicing each other up with my parents. And I'm pretty sure there was a series where a kid was getting his dick ripped off So my vivid memories of Robocop as a kid was the MagnaVolt commercial and Robo getting broken into pieces.

Honestly, that's the least shitty scene in the entire series. And that's saying something.

To answer your question though, it's probably because so much of what makes RoboCop memorable is nuanced stylistic touches that are incredibly hard to replicate unless everyone involved is nuanced as well.

It's not just the ultra violence, satire, sci-fi, pathos, ect., but everything working in concert to tell a great story. Every follow-up falls short because they focus on one or two aspects and half-ass or discard the rest.

He was the only one who got it right. I don't remember anything about the guy in Robocop 3, but I distinctly remember the guy from the TV show trying just a little too hard to look "robotic" and overdoing the jerkiness of the movement.

>the most recent Robocop comic gives him an upgrade that lets him run, jump, and move faster in general

Visualizing classic Robo being agile and acrobatic is just fucking weird. I know it's what they wanted him to do from the beginning, but still. Robocop's shtick is being a walking tank.

I remember I used to have a "space Robocop" figure. His armor was white and one of his arms was a non-firing missile bolted to his shoulder. He came with a space helmet and a little rocket drone thing he could grab onto.

Robocop toys pretty quickly approached Batman levels of ridiculousness.

While these have been renamed to avoid Mediafire vaping them...

http://www.mediafire.com/file/4m3h0wu7jjtbca4/Robertcop%2C_the_Future_of_Law_Endorsement.zip
1990's Robocop: The Future of Law Enforcement. Simon Furman does the later issues, and the comic does a dang good job of covering what could happen after Robocop 2. Kinda.
The series was really awesome and cyberpunk at first, until the studio said that it wasn't the cyber future, just the shitty future.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/aocmphkaii3gp1h/RoboSingles.zip
This one contains several one-shot or collections I've gathered. Includes Robocop vs Terminator and a couple of Marvel movie adaptations.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/fvg029a1i1eo113/90s_Robo.zip
This one? This one has the other ones made in the 90s by Dark Horse.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/dolbxqc4ij9hkd9/Frank_Miller%27s_Hobocop.zip
Closer based on Frank Miller's original Robocop 2/3 script, this is a bizarre ride only Frank Miller could create. Robocop 2.0 is certainly a lot more bonkers here than Cain was.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/z33wu623zkk26v5/10s_Robo.zip
The last set, this one has the books made in the last 7 years. Includes another Robocop vs Terminator, though does not include the 2014 reboot's comics, as I was unable to find those.
