First of all: is there a decent GUIDE or PASTEBIN for Godzilla? Like the ones made for Ultraman or Metal Heroes?
>>
>>15698317
Start with the 1954 one, then watch the second, then the third, and then the fourth and so on.
Unlike Ultraman the Godzilla serie is only composed on 29 films, and only a few of them are more than an hour and a half long, so it's not that long to watch it all.

But if you don't want to spend too much time on it, I will still recommand to start with the first, and to watch all the movies until Ghidorah the three headed monster. If you like all of those, just continue with the showa era, if not, move to an other era and watch a couple of film for each.

Well it's quite enjoyable, the new godzilla design was great and the ending was a nice surprise. But it's otherwise a bit generic. It was a nice start but nothing else.
The Millennium era is really good ! Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla is one of the best instalement in the franchise !
>>
>>15698781
For me, Mechagodzilla II and Against Mechagodzilla were the only ones I mostly enjoyed, maybe because my expectations were low.
Against MG was one of the first Godzilla movies I managed to find in good quality, so perhaps that elevated the experience a bit. It's not a fantastic movie, you can feel that it's mostly setup and while Kiryu is great, I find this version of Godzilla unremarkable.
As for MG II, it had a crummy Mechagodzilla design, beamspam out the ass and the shitty Rodan puppet. But at least it was fairly straightforward compared to the average overwritten Heisei movies (not an era I like) and the music was great.

I watched the version that is on the mega pack that floating around, I guess that's the japanese cut.

By generic I mean that the film kind of lack of depth, it's a nice action movie and certainly a breath of fresh air after the terrible pseudo-battle of the Heisei era. It did not treat the nuclear problem that much, and the whole "cg vs practical/Modern vs tradition" is nice but barely touch either.

It's not my favorite film out of this era, and I enjoyed more Godzilla Vs Megaguirus.

Wataru Mimura was the writer. He also wrote Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Godzilla 2000, Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, and Godzilla: Final Wars.

Masaaki Tezuka co-wrote Godzilla X Mothra X Mechagodzilla: Tokyo SOS. Toho had four concepts as a followup to GxM, though Tezuka thought they were dull and overnight came up with what became Tokyo SOS.

Totally hyped.
Godzilla obviously starts with a huge advantage due to brute strenght and raw power but Kong is damn nimble and was already shown being able to improvise tools and weapons so it's likely to be smarter - and way more dagerous - than your average kaiju. A battle in a urban area is very likely to result in lots of openings for Kong - and, dare I say, taking the high ground.

It also comes to how much he gets bigger compared to the first movie considering they say he's still growing.

>What do you think we can expect afterwards?
Gamera pls

>>
>>15703183
I don't think I can feel hype about anything anymore, and not much about this Monsterverse has interested me so far. Haven't even seen either of its two movies, only short bits and pieces of them. I know they made okay but unspectacular business and got mixed responses, so there's still areas where this franchise needs to prove itself.
My outlook on G:KoM leans slightly more towards positive. I'm not expecting it to be anything special, but ideally, it will be a fun, visually spectacular and well performing event movie that brings classic kaiju into public light and addresses the oft-repeated criticisms of G14. Don't know what to think of GvsK yet.

Don't care what they do after that. Hopefully the two movies won't be so badly regarded that they tank the franchise yet again. Resurrecting other old names would be nice, and I'd like to see a Hollywood-budgeted take on Mechagodzilla or weirder, more elaborate monsters like Destoroyah. But somehow I just don't see kaiju blowing up like capeshit did.

I don't recall hearing it going any further yet.

If Shin wasn't enough of a success for somebody to want to dump money into a new Gamera then the only thing left that could sell it would be Legendaryverse or whatever Toho does as a movie followup to Shin going a ton of business.

Been done before, I'm sure, but here's a fun hypothetical.

Of Euro/American directors of the past, say, 50 years, who would you want to direct a Godzilla movie?

It would be standalone (like Shin), so said director has a lot more room.

I.E:
>Stanley Kubrick's 3 hour long Kaiju horror/drama
>>
Had a pretty cool dream about Godzilla.
>Starts off at a harbor
>Smaller american godzilla (still big enough to match buildings) pops up from the water and just tears into the fish markets
>Everyone just fucks off as fast as they can
>I hide in a shelter like a dumbass and watch a dog get snatched up
>Helicopters come by and shoot large beanbags at it
>Unfortunately it run onto land
>Later it's found in Appalachia eating all sorts of vegetation as it heads West, mostly trees
(nice shot of it grazing like a gorilla)
>Not hard to miss, smokes coming out of it's mouth constantly
(Scientist says it's trying to ignite it's nuclear stomach)
>Cut to some sort of bat-creature
>Size of an elephant, but grows real fast as it eats animals and people
>Uses a frog tongue from hell to grab a bus full of kids though the emergency exit in minutes
(for some reason I get the idea that it'll get bigger than Godzilla and could become much more massive if it's eating is kept unchecked)
>Also there's mothra twins that look pretty cute for two giant monstrous caterpillars

> Upon release in the West, Godzilla was met with a negative western response with an average critic score of 38 out of 100 on Metacritic, with many reviewers criticizing an outdated presentation of the graphics and level design, while also noting awkward movement controls and repetition. Jim Sterling stated it "has the look and feel of a small budget game" rather than a "major 'AAA' release" while Jordon Devore reviewing for Destructoid called it "a letdown" given the premise Some critics though did note the faithful recreation of the monsters themselves and amount of content for long time Godzilla fans with Jon Ryan reviewing for IGN noting that while the overall game had a "lack of substantial gameplay", "the spirit of the old-school monster movie is where Bandai Namco absolutely nails it".

That would be amazing. Tsukamoto is one of my favourite filmmakers, it would be interesting to see how he handles such a big scale production. Everything in his career has a real handmade feel to it and that's part of what I love about his films. His style would be a fantastic fit for Goji though.

How can you call this fat >>15719430 Don't you see all the gainz?

Their reaction to the reveal is pretty much the same as the western fans reaction. They thought it was an underwhelming design after Shin.

They decided to give him a lot of muscle to support his size, it's a more pragmatic approach to design the character, opposite to that of Shin, which is just about making him as cool as possible.
>>
>>15722957
They are just combining design elements from the latest two Godzilla movies (Legendary's body and shape, Shin's texture and exposed musculature) in attempt to appeal to a Japanese audience who has shown revived interest in Godzilla thanks to those movies.
Personally, the design isn't what worries me about the Netflix movies.
>>
>>15722992
He has no more muscle, he just has less skin/scales to cover it. The body type is nearly identical, only the spikes and perhaps the nose look a little different as far as shape goes.
>>

>Personally, the design isn't what worries me about the Netflix movies.

>>
>>15722992
Shin was more about pushing the radioactive mutant angle and making him look like a fucked up and grotesque meth-addicted Muppet.
>>
>>15722995
If anything, this just exposes the fact that legendary Godzilla was never fat, since you can finally see all his muscle yourself.
>>
>>15723002
I'll give you the body type because that's why in silhouette they might look identical.
They're trying to merge western and japanese Godzilla design into one. Because they're hoping to pander to the western and japanese animefags.

But majority of Goji designs over the years have a lot of similarities, each design has one or two design quirks that set them apart.
>>
>>15722992
>Shin, which is just about making him as cool as possible.
I'd say something like GMK or 2000 are making him 'cool as possible. Shin was more of a horror angle.
>>
>>15723037
Cool is subjective and means many things, but given Anno's sensibilities, I think that's what he was trying to accomplish with the body horror angle. Japs probably cheered when he was destroying buildings, nobody was scared. They made memes.
But then again, some people find Fatzilla to be the most "cool" looking. It's a pretty shit design desu.

First design isn't even all that great though. It's not terrible but I really think later designs really improved on the basic roughdraft the original gave.

Only the millennium movies bothered to reference the rather awkward forth toe placement, and it never looked that great. The spine design was only ever referenced again in the strange 1968 suit, while a majority of the other movies went with the cleaner look of the 1962 design.

> In 1957, the film (GKOTM) made its way full circle back to Japan, where it was exhibited as Kaiju Ō Gojira (怪獣王ゴジラ, lit. "Monster King Godzilla"), where it became at least as popular as the original, replacing the latter in Japanese theaters and influencing sequels and remakes there.
According to Wikipedia, GKOTM was released in Japan and did really good business. While Kaiju Ō Gojira is a real thing (pic related), I haven't found any source concerning how well it did. Assuming the claim from Wikipedia is correct, Gojira/KOTM is by far the most successful Japanese Godzilla to date.

Keep in mind that the Japanese Film Industry was dying between the 1960s-1970s. Television reigned supreme. Many theaters shut down. Some studios started to producing soft core porn to survive and others went bankrupt. Facing dwindling audiences, Toho decided to target children and, starting with All Monsters Attack/Revenge, all remaining Showa films were intended for the Toho Champion Festival. Not only were there different people behind the camera, but the filmmakers were working with less than half of the budget that the Golden Age Godzilla films were made with. It's a unique period in Godzilla's history.

Heisei films milked nostalgia for all it was worth. The children who grew up on the Showa films were now adults and interested in an updated take on their favorite monsters.

The Millennium films suffered from over-saturation and quality issues. Godzilla (1998) was likely the turning point as you see an immediate and sharp decrease in attendance afterwards.

I don't understand how someone could miss the anti-nuclear statement of Shin-G. And I don't see how you could ignored the cooperation between Japan and the US in Shin-G as well.
Sure there is some nationalistic ideas in the movie, but that's the same for the rest of the Showa Era.
>>
>>15724419
Shin is not about WWII, with 54 it was fresh in people's mind at the time so what he represented was real. The longer Japan moved from that time, the less scary the threat he represented became.

That's why Shin was smart to exploit 3/11. Because that disaster gave a lot of japs an existential crisis about the future of their country. Now, Shin represent a fresh "fear" so the threat of what Godzilla represents becomes real.

People are against every sentiment of nationalism these days, and if you follow the news, it's on the rise on a global scale. But, Shin isn't truly nationalistic, it's just the by product of one of the main central themes of the movie, which is Japs showing strength and coming as a whole to stop a threat.

Americans see Shin Godzilla as reactionary and nationalistic because America butting in an making everything worse is a constant problem for the characters in the movie.

What they don't understand is that every nation on Earth is subordinate to America because it's the sole superpower. The US is doing shit like this to countries every day, and if an existential threat showed up in Tokyo instead of New York City, they'd definitely go full-force trying to destroy it without regards to the people they'd end up hurting.

Not only that but the Showa Era is quite nationalist itself, this era is about japanese scientist being better than the rest of the world, but it's also about collaboration between country, just like Shin.

>Americans see Shin Godzilla as reactionary and nationalistic because America butting in an making everything worse is a constant problem for the characters in the movie.
Even that is not totally true in Shin-g, it's the mindless use of military that is making things worse, the US Army is just more powerful than the Japanese forces and thuse cause more damage to the city, but they are in the end both equally useless.
This is also a reaction to the revision of the constitution orchested by Shinzo Abe to allow Japan to maintain an army (well that how I see it).
But the US plays a major role in the end, providing material support and logistics, that what I call "nation joining hand". There is help coming from France, Germany, the US and even China as they help producing the chemicals needed.
>>
>>15725100
The Showa films by Honda never portray Japanese scientists as the best in the world. They certainly portray them as heroes (alongside journalists) because it fits with the humanist ideas and anti-war belief. Honda very much preferred rational thinking and empathizing with others over war and blind hatred.

Anybody who spazzes out over Shin Godzilla's supposed nationalism must have slept through the third act, as France, Germany, China, and the US all help out, one way or another. The point where all of their efforts bear fruit happens while the Battle In Outer Space theme plays, another film which very explicitly has ideas about working together.

Also, checked.

I really wanna know how the fuck people come off as thinking Shin is nationalistic. The whole movie is nothing but voicing frustration over how the Japanese government just pretends they come up with a solution when at most they only temporarily delay the problem causing an even bigger one in the future. Shin's ending is quite possibly the biggest downer ending in a Godzilla movie because literally nothing was resolved when it came to Godzilla, they just froze him in the middle of a city which will only last for a brief period of time right before he was about to evolve into an even more dangerous form and everyone blindly trusts the government's word that the problem went away which is inevitably going to cause an even bigger disaster in the future.
>>
>>15726785
The movie ends on a very high not compared to the original film, honestly. Japan has more confidence in it's ability to be proactive and it appears as though they are going to learn to be more independent in the future. The viewer knows Godzilla is still a problem, but everyone seems genuinely relieved about freezing him and is looking up towards a brighter future.
Meanwhile the original movie ends with mankind having to make a weapon even more terrifying than Godzilla in order to defeat him, and leaves everyone with the looming threat such a weapon could present humanity.
>>
>>15726785
Didn't the scientists note than the Godzilla isotope had an incredibly short half-life? Godzilla COULD wake up yes, and probably will for a future film. But as far as they are concerned, Godzilla being frozen means the problem will solve itself given time.
>>
>>15726803
>Meanwhile the original movie ends with mankind having to make a weapon even more terrifying than Godzilla in order to defeat him, and leaves everyone with the looming threat such a weapon could present humanity.

I think that's the singular most interesting idea about all of the Godzilla movies, they're fucked either way, because Godzilla is only going to come back stronger and will need another, even more destructive solution. The cyclical nature of this war with Godzilla is pretty damn bleak.

They said Anigodzi will continue that theme, we'll see if they can pull it off.

without a doubt the greatest of these movies
>>
>>15735013
It's better than most of the movies that came out after it. Literally all everybody complains about is "m-m-muh minya suit looks ugly" or "i-its for kids!" which 90% of the franchise is already geared towards.

Outside of an emotional ending that the movie didn't even build up on it's own, it's another lazy Heisei popcorn flick. It throws away all of it's good ideas and it has the bog-standard lazy Kawakita effects. They literally used Bandai toys for some of the effects.
>>15736078
Godzilla was meant to look more like Minya, and Minya was made to be encite empathy and pity from the audience. He's supposed to be ugly, as even Godzilla doesn't like him all that much until the ending.

I took it as an extension of the "Japan vs fiction" tagline. He was CG, but Godzilla was made to look somewhat like a traditional rubber suit, so the old sound effects just added to the sense that Japan was under attack by tokusatsu. It was an interesting mix between real things and fake stuff.
Maybe that's just my mental gymnastics though. Using the same explosion sounds in rapid succession was mildly annoying, but I didn't really mind it.

Real talk. Do you just like the idea of Godzilla or do you appreciate the actual films? And if it's the latter, do you think any of the films are legitimately good and hold up to objective scrutiny?
>>
>>15743332
I like the films. Most of the films in the Showa era after 1954 range from decent to great with obvious exceptions like Gigan, Megalon, DAM, Revenge, and Raids Again. Most of the Heisei flicks are bloated, sloppy affairs but there's some good ones. Same with everything after 1995.
>>
>>15743518
>Gigan
The biggest issue I have with this film is the stock footage. And the sad part is that most of the recycling is unnecessary. It's just padding. Otherwise it's an above average entry with a likable cast.

Like >>15698738 said, start with the 1954 movie.
After that you should watch all of the first 15 films.
Only exceptions to the first 15 are Godzilla vs the smog monster and Godzilla vs the sea monster. These are both considered really weird and not very good or very impactful films.
Son of Godzilla is not a very fun or good movie (unless you like hilariously campy stuff) but it introduces the idea of a baby Godzilla.

Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (the 90's one) is quite good as well as Godzilla, mothra and king ghidorah giant monsters all out attack.

Outside of the original 15 and the ones I mentioned above I personally really liked the millennium series and Godzilla final wars.

Also if you want to quickly know about a godzilla move you should watch cinemmasacre's monster madness, godzillathon. One episode for each movie and each episode is about 2 minutes long and give a good synopsis with little spoilers.

Same thing with the recommendation that came after, if you like the style of an era, watch it, if not, skip it, but you have to watch a couple of films from that era to make up your mind.
