See those babies lined up there? That's Saber Athena, Gipsy Avenger, and Bracer Phoenix!

And we got blueprints too
>>
Are these the only Jaegers in the sequel? If so, too humanoid with the designs. The crazy looking designs were half the fun of the 1st film.
>>
Gipsy's successor is a Mark VI, and the Mech fleet is supposed to number seven in all. No surprises in the weaponry here
>>
>>15692696

Unconfirmed on whether we'll see more, but it seems likely thanks to that number in the upper left.

Here's Saber Athena. Another sweet mark VI, back mounted twinblades, particle charger fists, accelerator legs... sounds like fun!
>>
Finally Bracer Phoenix, continuing our trend of the bricks being a bit out of date, is a Mark 5 (maybe in development alongside Striker before being called off?)

Comes equipped with a gunnerpod, vortex cannon, and anti-kaiju missile launcher
>>
>>15692692
Which countries are Saber Athena and Bracer Phoenix supposed to come from?
>>
I think Bracer Phoenix is made from Gipsy spare parts and other salvaged stuff.
>>
>>15692705

We don't have any information on that yet. I'm *guessing* Saber might be China? Since it's more-or-less supposed to be Crimson's successor. There's at least two Chinese actresses (Jing Tian playing Liwen Shao, and Lily Ji as Mei Lin) so they could well be the pilots of the Chinese Jaeger.

There's a number of internation actors in the cast list, so there's a range of possibilities. Mexican wouldn't surprise me, I know that's something Guillermo wanted, but there's also Mackenyu who I'd be surprised if he didn't have a Jaeger which'd suggest Japan.

I have to agree with anon here, the old mech designs were bulky and had that industrial feel to them. The new ones look too generic and thin, gives off a bland look especially with gipsy's new head
>>
>>15692692

These new designs are awful, Gipsy and the red one are barely different in body shape aside from a slight difference in hip to shoulder ratio.

Compared to the first movie the new ones look so much more generic and streamlined.

Western figures, in general, are a joke 99% of the time. They're obsessed with soft plastics that don't hold paint well and make that awful squeaking noise when anything moves.

Agreed. Fuck knows what happens in concept, because the first movie nailed regional aesthetics for the likes of Gypsy who resembled a football player, and Cherno who resembled an old nuclear tower.

>>15697553
Theyre so generic. You've got your boring heroic looking MC mech with the most normal proportions which i guess you could maybe argue gipsy always was. The sleek agile feminine one that will probably have female pilots and then the big bulky dude who either has big guns, or has big guns. Their silhouettes are just the same cookie cutter hero line-up that gets used in every kids action cartoon.
It seems to me that because first film didn't do as well ass theyd hoped, theyre cutting out anything that seems even slightly unconventional for mass appeal.
>>
>>15698575

It was announced early, then probably not, then maybe, then Guillermo was off, then new director and John Boyega made it happen. So it was a struggle, but it's real!
>>
>>15698773

I agree they're not *as* unique and varied as the originals, but I think they're still pretty cool. They've got a variety of leg designs/stances, and Bracer's gunner pod chest works for me.

Also, this is just the main trio, I'm hoping we'll have a full 7.
>>
>>15697553
>Fuck knows what happens in concept, because the first movie nailed regional aesthetics for the likes of Gypsy who resembled a football player, and Cherno who resembled an old nuclear tower.
Those were all decisions made because Del Toro and those involved had a vision and a passion for the project. This one is being made in a sterile environment, directed by a Netflix director, has FIVE writers, is pushing diversity in a ham fisted way, is no longer "practical effects when possible", aiming to be transformers, wants China bux, and ultimately designed by committee.

I wish this movie was good but when Del Toro was no longer attached (anyone know if he just had no interest or if he got fucked out of the rights?) I knew it was gonna be bad, and when I saw these designs the first time I knew it was gonna be shit. The sad thing is its probably gonna be more successful than the original was, at least domestically.
>>
>>15699544
Del Toro was in a loose producer role.
>>
Boyega and Knight still seem really into it, and like mentioned Del Toro is still in the loop. So I am not so quick to write it off. I think the people involved do have plenty of passion for it even if they might not have the visual sense of Del Toro for mech design.

>Boyega and Knight still seem really into it, and like mentioned Del Toro is still in the loop.
Del Toro is essentially only there in name, he has next to nothing to do with the production of the film and definitely has no say in the script or directing. Boyega and DeKnight might be passionate about it but neither are as skilled or talented as Del Toro nor do they have as good a career in bringing interesting visions to life. No one involved with the original's creativity is still there, it's a Hollywood by the numbers film with a Netflix director attached and the main selling point is that a guy from Star Wars is in it.

Del Toro IS Pacific Rim, and you can bet your ass nowhere near the love and creativity will be in this. I'd bet money that the Jaegers now move acrobatically and like humans rather than the slower heavier movement of before, with action scenes more akin to Bayformers.
>>
>>15700952
>BigLittleDinos
Literally who
>>
>>15701510

People who make masks. I'm just crediting because it's cool and in case anyone wants to look them up. They're doing a Crimson Typhoon mask too.
>>
>>15701505

DelToro has a credit for 'story' according to imdb, and there's also some other creative crossover- Jon Jashni and Mary Parent have producer credits.

Also, good news on the monster front- Guy Davis is still one of the concept artists, as are some of the others.

I'd like the old crew too but it's not like there's no crossover. If this is what it takes to have a PR2, so be it!
>>
>>15701604
>DelToro has a credit for 'story' according to imdb
The credit is that he made the original that this one bases itself on, he's confirmed to have next to no input on this one. While a couple of producers are still involved the majority of those who made Pacific Rim what it was are all gone. It's cool that Guy is still there at least, maybe the monster designs won't blow chunks unlike the new Jaegers.

I don't like needless sequels and with how close ended the first movie was, Del Toro being gone, and everything shown so far looking pretty bad it seems this is a needless sequel.
>>
>>15701614

See, as for me? I need more Kaiju vs Robot films period!

Legendary Godzilla didn't scratch my itch nearly as much as PR did, and even if it's not the same as the first one, it'll still be a big monster brawl flick and I love that.
>>
Godzilla has dozens of sequels. Some worked, some didn't- but if we get more, then the more likely we'll get more great ones!
>>
>>15701714
From the production photos and the suits shown, be prepared for a high probability of more human action scenes than robot scenes.
>>
>>15701798
>>15701714
Watching you two talk is like watching Dayman and Nightman arguing across a table while having a nice pizza dinner. Personally, I'm going to be cautiously optimistic. There's too many signs of the film being a dud for me to be too hyped for it, but hey, giant robots ppb the big screen that isn't Shitstormers: Death of the Normies Wallet is always good news in my book.
>>
>>15701798

I'm betting somewhat more than the first movie, but it's not like they'll skimp on the giant stuff. I mean, the shots we've seen have clearly had a Jaeger hatch in them, right?

>>15702090

Hah, yea ^^

And we'll have a better idea of how hyped to be when we start seeing trailers
>>

>Most SOC used to be like $60 back in the day
First off no they fucking didn't, majority were double that at least with only a certain few being cheap because they had stupid high production volume and were lower quality.

Secondly SoC have constantly improved in quality, articulation, detail, size, and accessories so this is par for the course. It's also much more niche than the majority of what they make so that usually affects either price or availability.

I'm seeing comments that the new Jaegers are smaller than the originals, because they're used more for conventional military stuff and not kaiju.

On one hand thats too bad, the weight of the machines was part of what made Pacific Rim so visually engaging. On the other hand, if we get mini-jaegers fighting larger Kaiju in the movie, it might help to keep the visual scale difference clearer.

Are they still piloted by two people or what?
>>
I actually like these designs better than the Jaegers from the first movie, but I see the angst posters are out hating on them because... that is what they do all day.... hate... HATE.

Lower budget? The CGI looks heavily downgraded from the first. Jaegers look cartoony as fuck.
>>
So where the hell are the Kaiju coming from in this one? I haven't seen a single monster in any of the promotional material.

>>15706727
What if that concept of Jaegers integrated with Kaiju is actually true in this one? Like, the reason single pilots can operate these mechs is because they're actually drifting with a Kaiju fetus in the core or some shit. I'm almost expecting these new Jaegers to be villainous somehow, just based on the self-righteous tone of the trailer. Perhaps they dig up some of the older models to combat them in the final act.
>>
>>15706799

We *just got* the Jaegers. Wait for it!

The Kaiju are monsters, teasing and waiting for them makes sense.

Also they may not be done yet, the movie is still some time from release.

>>15706798

Similarly, we *just got* the Jaegers fighting against a blank backdrop. The models don't look lower quality, but they're in a 'clean,' non-messy environment right now. The full movie effects aren't done yet. See when they're actually somewhere, then we can judge.
>>
>>15706798
It's barely even a teaser trailer, man. Just a convention advertisement to show off the designs a little.

Remember the first TFA teaser?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erLk59H86ww

And it is a lower budget, considering that GDT managed to get the first movie made for 20 million dollars less than they initially anticipated.

I'll hold back my final judgement for now, but i feel this movie won't be for me.
The original movie had a nice balance of seriousness and dumb super robot shit, while this one seems to be full-on "lol giant robots amirite lmao", with the speech in the trailer, and the website even calling them "your own superhero suits".
It's not that i don't like dumb SR shit, but i really don't feel like it'll be a satisfying sequel to the first movie. The moment the music started playing in the trailer, it felt like a goddamn Piraka commercial (then again, as others have said, maybe the CG will be better in a real trailer).
What's most likely from the evidence presented so far is that the movie will be a Bayformers-esque dumb action flick, and i suppose there's nothing wrong with that, but i'll miss the first movie's style.

Then again, i'm a fucking retard judging the movie on a website and the very first teaser material, so i suppose the chances i'll be pleasantly surprised are actually quite high.

You have absolutely no understanding of how actually unique designs work, and instead, focus on such minor shit like basic body shape. You do understand you can make two different entities look completely different even if they share the same basic proportions.

Within the confines of the movie, no other Jaeger has Gypsy's ridiculous popped collar and shoulder lights. No other Jaeger has Cherno's blocky stature, wide as fuck hips or nuclear tower for a head. No other Jaeger has Typhoon's double arm and reverse joint legs.

The new Jaegers literally ONLY differ in proportions and some minor armor differences, the only one with an actually unique piece is Titan Redeemer's reverse joint legs.

I mean, there's almost assuredly an story driven reason the designs in this movie are more unified. Especially given the trailer, it's clear that the Jaeger program has been given new life and is likely controlled by a single initiative that could be more-or-less in charge of design. Unlike in the last movie where each country sort of did their own thing as the program started falling apart, it's possible that these new, more advanced, models are primarily developed by a single division that dominates the field.

It's like how cars on the road don't look as unique as they used to. Troubleshooting and innovation leads to an over saturation of efficient and proven designs rather than plenty of unique ones.
>>
>>15707106
They can stretch or squash the silhouettes all they want but stylistically they all look like they've been designed by the same person. i don't see how you can unironically argue that the new ones don't look more similar to each other when its obviously the point. >without using Cherno.
theres only 4 relevant jaegers in the first movie.
big broad shouldered american footballer gipsy Its got the most normal humanoid appearance because its the hero. Still looks fairly unique because of its odd proportions
Theres the obviously russian cherno. Huge cooling tower head thats actually just a hat for the chest cockpit. Fist that are just bloacks of metal. Gereally blocky appearance overall. Simple green appearance, no frills just puches.
The red and yellow crimson typhoon, obviously chinese. Big old camera head. Three arms, one of which is a fuck huge cannon the others are spinning blades. has chicken legs. Rounded carapace like armour
And then theres striker. the newest and most effective jaeger. Nice shiny silver and gold paint job. Angel wings. Very little exposed machinery. Pretty much says all that needs to be said about the jaeger there.

Theyre meant to come from different stages of jaeger technological progression, from different countries, different designers. The designs communicate the unique origins of each design fairly well.

Maybe you prefer the newer jaegers but I dont see why you're still trying to argue that the newer ones look more distinct from one another seeing as other anons have said, thats obviously not the point of these new designs.

What I like about the first movie is how the designs played into the downfall of Cherno and Crimson. Cherno was large and bulky, well protected but not fast by any means, so when the weaponized kaiju revealed themselves Cherno couldn't react, and unfortunately for it the kaiju in question spat acid all in the cooling tower. Crimson on the other hand had a different problem entirely, while Crimson was certainly fast on the move it had a critical design flaw, the command pod was far to exposed, all it took was a slightly brighter kaiju to get a grip.

Also that anon is retarded, the big four were entirely distinct.

>>
>>15706654
I like to think that the designs being more sleek and humanoid boils down to 2 factors; propaganda, making the kids say "cool" and getting people to join the program. And two, because the only two successful Jaegers on the last wave of Kaiju attacks were humanoid while the gimmicky ones got easily defeated. While someone like Cherno has a cool factor, the only reason it survived so long was because of a lack of good opponents.
>>
>>15707870
>the only reason it survived so long was because of a lack of good opponents
Nah man, it was over engineered to hell and back, Cherno was able to punch above it's weight class until it got blindsided by a weaponised kaiju.
>>
>>15707870
Nah, we've gone over this before. Newt murdered Cherno and Crimson, because he knew enough about the Jaegers that when he drifted with the Kaiju hivemind, they got the exact tools needed to beat them, and built hard counters to their advantages.

But Gypsy was new and had the advantage of being round 2, with prior knowledge of the EMP pulse and the acid spray.
>>
>>15707895
I read the official site and the registered confrontations for Cherno and I remember that the highest cathegory of Kaiju that it challenged alone was 2. The 3 and higher cathegories needed the help of Typhoon and Eureka.

>>15708006

They also met their downfall after Charlie synced with the Kaiju. It's entirely plausible (and likely) that his knowledge of the Jaegers directly influenced how the Kaiju attacked in that fight.

The jaegers in 2 look cooler.
Saber Athena in particular is my jaeger waifu.

The jaegers in 1 were too top heavy and derpy, they had oversized chests and looked like they skipped leg day, they were too grey, and from what I remember looked overly dirty and neglected for some of the most important machines in the world with giant hangers dedicated to taking care of them.

Too many exposed internal parts made them look uglier than if they were just covered a bit more.

The proportions didn't convey their combat styles very well, light and speedy ones didn't look very fundamentally different from the heavy and slow ones, Striker seems like too much of a brick shithouse for how fast it moves whereas Gipsy looks more agile but moves slower and uses brute strength more.

On the other hand, the ones in the first movie mostly had better looking head designs and did a better job of conveying their nations of origin with certain aesthetic themes, I wish the new ones did that.

Niether of the movies have generally bad designs, why don't we all just get along and acknowledge that they each do certain things better.
>>
>>15708175
They totally were. Otachi had acid to counter Cherno Alpha's armor and a prehensile tail to counter Crimson Typhoon. Leatherback was big and bulky to also fight Cherno and had an EMP to take out Striker Eureka.

Gipsy Danger wasn't accounted for because Newt didn't know about her or her new abilities.

Comparing Saber and Titan, Titan has smoother more curved armor on a heavier build, sloped shoulders, a completely different head, different leg and even knee setups...

And comparing Titan to Bravo, two of the bulkie ones, everything about Bravo is more angular, it's got the backpack/shoulder assemblies, the leg designs are notably thickier on Bravo while the arms, Titan has bigger upper arms and smaller forearms to Bravo's vice-versa... they're two of the less-different and they are still very distinct.

And the unnamed blue one? It looks like a bug-eyed blue space marine with shoulder fins.

Yea, they *do* have a different style than 1 and none have a Cherno head, but they aren't all the same by any means and are often more different than Striker and Gipsy. I bet once you see more of 'em and get used to them a lot of people here will end up liking them a lot more.
>>
>>15708364

>>
>>15707915

I didn't think we had that much cat information... and two of the solo kills were well on the end of the campaign in '24, by which point most Kaiju would be cat 4 and I wouldn't expect a lot of cat 1s (cat 4s first appeared in '20).
>>
I am afraid they got more jaegers in at the expensive of single unit detail. Dunno, looks like that to me.
>>
>>15708377

Ah yea, "obviously." It's more like 'it's not 1 so they're taking time to get used to it.'

The owner of Legendary loves Kaiju. DeKnight is an Ultraman fan. Boyega got in for his nerddom too. There's actually much better ways to make money than a movie that only luckily made a profit due to China, PR2 is Legendary taking a risk in order to give us more giant robots!
>>
>The old Jaggers are reconstructed and put into museums
>Kaijus somehow take control of the new Jaggers
>Pilots are forced to use the old Jaggers to fight
>>
>>15708390

Single 'em out and look at them. Rather than all 7 at once, just chose two and really break down the details.

Like in the lineup, pick out Saber and the unnamed one next to it. Both on the smaller/faster end, but examine the details. How much do those really look the same when you focus on just those two? Or any duo?

Ok, we've got three bulky ones in the back, all with different armor design, weapons, and are easy to tell apart at a glance. Note that they should appear more distinct in practice- the leftone has whips, middle that f-off mace, and right one is a gunner, so different fighting styles.

We've got two nigh identical ones in the front... 'cause they're both the same mecha ^^ Then we got a sleek one that stands out from the rest.

The first one did things well and didn't draw attention to it, just felt natural. This one everything they have shown and the express interest of practically banning the kind of white guy the previous protagonist is feels very hamfisted. Considering this movie is being designed by committee I expect lot of pandering and pushing multiculturalism rather than just letting nationalities interact.
>>
>>15708775

Geesh, fragile much? It continually amazes me how in a thread about nitpicking mecha designs that earlier have sincere arguments about toy companies, the hissy fits of people who get mad about other people getting to have protagonists too are still the most petty.

>>
>>15708785
>Seriously, do you expect to post stupid stuff on 4chan and not have it called out for being totally idiotic?
I don't know, you seem to expect that. I'm saying this movie made in a boardroom, written by 4-5 people known for writing by the numbers focus group directed stuff, and directed by a man who only does television or series seems to be going down a bad path. The reason why the first movie worked was because it's a passion project, you could tell how much love and care went into it. So far we have seven mediocre at best looking mecha, a potentially fuck huge cast that seems more like a college brochure rather than a meeting of nations, downgrade in several actors, confirmed to be using more CGI than practical effects, the practical effects that are there look like shit (what the fuck is that pilot suit), and a teaser that hopefully improves when the movie gets some polish because currently the mecha look very low res (the toys indicate that's not the case and the finished product will look like that), and Bayformers style action with no weight.

The action is going to be bad if you look at DeKnight's list of work, it's all human action that is extremely samey and consist of a lot of jump punches and rebounding off of walls. Without Del Toro or a similar creative eye for the film we won't be seeing any cool scenes like boat sword this movie.

Also where is everyone pulling Del Toro wrote this movie from? The credit is original story, as in he wrote Pacific Rim not any version of this movies script. He's confirmed to have next to no input on this movie.
>>
>>15708822
/co/ has broken containment and is all over /m/ now thanks to shit like pacific rim. They're buried so deep in the poz they don't want any one to have an actual discussion on the quality of the work or what went into creating it. They just want to ship characters together and buy shitty cheap figurines. The robots are props to them, as opposed to old school /m/ where the robots were the reason you tolerated the flesh bags.
>>
>>15708818

Hey, we wanna discuss *actual* casting? That's fine. You wanna here someone throw a fit because the lead actor's not white? Or because, oh, no, there's a lot of international people in this movie about people around the world coming together? I'm going to call that on the idiocy it is.

Boyega's been in a number of SF movies, he really is not going to have trouble with the role. DeKnight, ok, I can get worries about him, his resume doesn't include anything like this, though as-of yet I personally am not worried. Specific actor worries? Sure, bring 'em up! "There's a large number of actors most of whom are non-white"? Ooo, am I seriously supposed to be worried about it coming from a large talent pool?

Heck, people were trying to say it'd be unpopular in China upthread. Aside from them having no problem with PR1, let's also not forget the most popular franchise, by far, in China is the Fast & the Furious franchise. They aren't like the butthurt losers afraid of skincolor, they just like big-name hollywood actors.
>>
"These actors have different ethnicities" is not a legit worry on quality.

Heck, Casting Agency study of 400 movies of all budgets show diverse casts just sell more: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-caa-diversity-study-exclusive-20170622-story.html

So yea, money-wise, it makes sense, overwhelmingly the logical move. Quality-wise, it's fine. Butthurt white guys sense, who cares besides them? The mecha world does not revolve around insecure racists.
>>
Can we all just stop talking about this and get back to the designs and trailer?
>>
>>15708850
>Has no talent
>Is super ugly
>Constantly pushes Muh racism/muh diversity politics

Yea man. Who has a problem with them replacing the every man white guy with what is clearly a diversity hire who can't act, isn't appealing to watch and will tank the film meaning we won't see any more mecha films with large budgets?

Did you notice in the post where I point out there are a few talented black actors and the original film was carried by one? No of course not. Now fuck off.

>>15708855
You're the same retard who always posts that article with absolutely no awareness of what the article is saying.

Aside from me never having posted it before, it specifies *all* budget levels, from low to high, including 7 out of the top 10 top grossers (thus neatly handling your 'what if no SW' question) and gives numbers, 31mil vs 12mil average opening weekends.

You aren't the only one, but... (1) keep in mind the one we saw move the most was Saber Athena, the quickest of the lot (like Avenger didn't do anything Striker didn't do), and (2) we haven't seen them deal with anything or be anywhere, and that's where a lot of feeling of weight comes from. Moving around in a black void robs us of context.

So, I wouldn't get too worried yet, but I see where you're coming from.
