What can the peorples of /m/ tell me of FASA's Star Trek stuff? I remember seeing their stuff advertised as a kid but wasn't really old enough to get into it.
>>15686440
They were lead miniatures for the Trek fasa game in the 80s. They came unassembled and unpainted. I remember seeing them in a toy store or comic book store, I was tempted to get the Excelsior because I love the design, but I had no idea how to glue the parts together. Soldering I guess, or maybe superglue. They were small, most around 3 inches.
Eaglemoss came to the rescue and has been making Star Trek miniatures the past few years that come assembled and pre-painted. A real good selection of Trek ships, I recommend them.
Any truth to this?
>>15687499
They call it the Akiraprise because it's basically the Akira class with inverted nacelle pylons. The two share a LOT of design elements.

>'Use the Akira!' came the order. They really thought no one would notice." [14](X) In effect, the producers at first wanted to reuse the Akira-class without any changes, "lock stock and barrel" according to a horrified Drexler. When informed of this decision, he and other members of the art department chose to oppose the imperative. [15](X) Herman Zimmerman subsequently commented, "We found a ship [the USS Thunderchild] that was in our archives – a minor vessel that had been used in a battle in one of the features that had been created by ILM. We did not use that ship, but we took ideas from it and from those ideas eventually – and this process took about four months, all week and weekend CGI work by [...] Doug Drexler – we finally came up with [the eventual] shape."
I think I have PDFs of a bunch of it somewhere in my stacks
But yeah I too saw them in Starlog and in the comics shops. Never got them but from my experience with the Aliens minis you could just superglue them.
I got really close to getting a shitload when Local Game Store was expecting to go out of business and they clearanced a bunch of their minis.
Got some of the Battletech VF-1s though.

What always amazed me about this story was the fact that television executives actually knew what an Akira-class starship was, and that it was a popular design among the Star Trek community.
I'm assuming that whoever this was he couldn't have been an actual fan of the franchise because an actual fan would know that the rest of the fanbase would never approve of reusing a design no matter how popular, especially in the context of a prequel and how autistic Trekkies are in regards to consistency.
Damn. This guy sure made some stuff.

I've been rewatching enterprise since a few days ago. It's such a tragedy that it was canned before the refit saw service.
If I somehow make 100 million dollars, I will invest 30 million into making the next season of enterprise, bakula and all. If the based it on the novels that have come out since the series ended, things would go well.

I really don't mind that the secondary hull is so straight and blocky. The view from below looks pretty neat.
I don't like the curvy top connector: it looks like it's from the wrong era. I'm also not a fan of how the nacelle struts are straight-up wings. The thing that really gets me, however, is the windows on the interior of the outer ring and the exterior of the inner module. Why the fuck would you give these guys windows?

They're probably separated enough that you could see the ship's hull as a horizon with the stars above it. Would be a nice shot if they bother to show it.
That said I don't really get the two rings thing.
>>15712902
I actually really like this ship. It would be a pretty great design if the show was set after TNG/DS9/VOY. But for pre-TOS, it just doesn't fit. I'm not naive enough to think the original '60s aesthetic would pass today, but they could've gotten closer than this. Or just set the show in a different time period.
There's a new trailer for Discovery

>>15712902
>>15712967
The fundamental design MO for prequel Trek seems to be anti-smooth. The lower tech ships have very segmented plating, they generally lack a secondary body and any protrusions like a nacelle is firmly anchored.
The Shenzhou seems like a believable design progression from the NX. Even the Discovery, which is closer in design to TOS era ships, is more segmented and has bulkier connecting parts. Even the saucer has to have a solid looking arm to attach it to the very large secondary hull.
TOS Enterprise looks advanced in comparison because of its clean, almost alien construction and spindly protrusions hoisting large nacelles and an oversized saucer.

Aesthetics look like some odd mashup of Prime and Kelvin.
>>15698259
Pacific 201's people set out wanting to marry classic Trek designs with modern navy and aerospace aesthetics. It works really well. The Pacific itself is a gorgeous ship and their redesigns of the NX and Daedalus are pretty good as well.
Doesn't it suck realizing that we will never get another star trek series like to, tng, ds9, voy, or ent? Anything to come in the future will always be abrams-like and nothing like our trek.
Hell, even discovery which is supposed to be in the "prime" timeline is actually a secret reboot that has nothing to do with the actual prime timeline.
>>15713605
You will never rubs t'pol ears and orgasim through mind-meld, or receive Vulcan neuropressure.

>>15713665
I love their Daedalus redesign, never really liked the original design, crazy what moving the orientation of the sphere can do.
>>15713665
That's pretty cool. I was always bummed that Enterprise didn't go on long enough to possibly see the Daedalus get introduced.
>>15713675
>yfw it's going to lead into theKelvin's creation
They're rebooting in line with the movies tech scale. The next series of this reboot- timeline would probably be Star Trek proper with a new Kirk. ( I think ST4 for the Kelvin Universe will be the end of the Kelvin Timeline)
>>15713687
It's is still up in the air if a fourth movie is even going to happen.
>>15713691

The nacelles are longer than the entire rest of the ship from tip of the saucer to tip of the pylon. What possible reason could there be for them to be that ridiculously huge?
>>15713643
It barely looks like Star Trek. Sure some of the imagery is there, but if people weren't wearing the chevron and they didn't say things like "Klingon," I'd think it was a totally disconnected thing.
>>15713471
>add more windows
>more windows, I said!
Threadly reminder that we got 23rd century's Klingon battlecruiser in Enterprise just because the original design they came up with for that episode didn't have enough windows, and they were too small.
>>15712902
The secondary hull behind integrated with the saucer reminds me of the Bonaventure.
>>15712902
>>15713481
I'm really disappointed that the Shenzou isn't the series' main ship. I thought it was supposed to be about diversity? Why not have a female asian captain as a main character?
>>15713885
It's instances like these (and Kevin Smith's Jon Peters story) that makes me wonder if it's a fluke or a miracle that anything good ever came out of Hollywood.
>>15714108
Because Michelle Yeoh is expensive.
The more loaded answer is that we live in strange, backwards times where a black female protagonist is both a safer choice, yet more daring because of the current social climate.
The Shenzou definitely looks like it belongs more in STO's post-TNG ricer custom ship era rather than in the ten-ish years before TOS. It's a decent design, but it doesn't fit in the apparent time period.
I don't know what to make of the Discovery itself. I wasn't a huge fan of the teaser design, but it grew on me a little bit. The apparent final changes are really weird, especially the ludicrously long nacelles.
>>15715174
I wonder how long until we get decent image of USS Europa.
>>15715467MUUUUUDD
>>15713665
Why couldn't they of done this for Discovery? I mean the discovery it's self doesn't look too bad but the Shenzou looks like it's post DS9 for gods sake. I mean I know they couldn't gone full 60's I'm not that delusional, but they could of used ques from the old stuff and mix it with modern.
Honestly that's my only real gripe about discovery, I'm remaining open minded about the rest.

>>15717697
I wish I could be an arbiter of taste such as you, please teach me your ways.
>>15717697
I can agree. There are some things that I personally dislike about it. For one, I think its too busy on the upper area. It would look better without that satellite dish and antennae imo. I also dislike the exposed parts of the saucer's rim. But those are just personal gripes, it's a good design no matter how you slice it.

In the trailer the Captain mentions that they're testing a "new way to fly", so it's possible the Discovery is an early attempt at a transwarp drive like the Excelsior, or something else similar.
