The Titans as a whole are hilarious, but most especially the Imperial-class. Still, I love the stupid-silly concept of a literal walking castle of death. Moreso once corrupted by Chaos.
>>
>>15683783
They're cool. I like them because they nicely encapsulate the design philosophies of each faction: Imperial mechs are big, lumbering things with cathedrals bolted onto them, Eldar mechs by contrast are thin and lithe, and Orky Gargants are giant junk piles even bigger and more lumbering than Imperial titans.

They even have an entire marine complement just to protect them from boarding actions. It's so stupid-silly it falls into awesome territory.

Moreso the support/AA-heavy variant, which adds gigantic missiles to one arm and a bunch of literal AA towers.

They only appeal to people who know very little about giant robots in general. Most people here don't really like them, neither do Asians or Japanese.

To put it on simpler terms, it's very much like Mechwarrior/Battletech. If you're only into it, the robots look amazing (they absolutely don't) because even with all their problems, the concept of a giant robot is too amazing to pass up.
But then you get into the genre and you'll see them for the freaks they are, since pretty much everything else also does gaint robots, but does them much better.

Exactly this. Battletech nerds tend to hate on anime and even on Japanese Battletech, and I suspect that they're insecure because they know their designs are inferior. All they need to do is sit down and watch some Madox or some Votoms or something and their world would be opened up.

I like battletech, but you don't need to use their bad designs. Just print pictures of different mechs and let your opponent know what's what.

>>15683783
I love them. The titans, the knights, the dreadnaughts, the kans and gargants, the eldar wraiths, the war walkers, the sentinels, yes even the dreadknights are cool. Ridiculous and over-the-top, but cool. Not all of them are good per se but I love them for following per-faction design cues

Get a load of this guy. Even the people over in the BTgeneral are happy every time somebody sits down and comes up with a less awful take on an official design. People get the attachment players feel to stat blocks that served them well mixed up with whatever feeling they have about the terrible official art for some reason.

Most of them do watch robot cartoons as well.

>>15686617
/btg/ kind of... I mean, there's still like a 50/50 split between those who do and those who don't, with namefags on each side.

The overall fanbase is extremely, almost religiously, robot-averse, though. It gets to the point where they attacked fan animators and artists over any anime influence they could see, even if that is pretty limited in scope considering their favorite artist, FD, does nothing but Gundamify their robots and they sing praise to him, unknowingly.

Don't get me wrong, I like the setting and recognize that is has some neat elements to it but the fanbase is far over the cancer line, somewhere in the ebola and real chickenpox territory.

The translation of 40k mecha from lore into the tabletop game really annoys me. For starters, the scale of vehicles in tabletop have always been fucked up, the classic example being that there's no way ten space marines fit into a rhino transport. For the past many years, though, I feel that GW has exasperated the scale problem by inserting more and more gargantuan mecha into the game, from the new hotness that is the Imperial Knight to the Warlord Titan. Of course, these models can't be too big as they'd inflate the price and become harder to manage on the table, so they're shrunk down in size compared to how they're depicted and described from the various background material and stories. Warlord Titan heads being big enough to have a Star Trek-style bridge in them? Well not according to the Forgeworld model with the head being a tight fit for three, and not much room in the body for a maintenance crew.

As nice as the scale of Primaris Marines are in relation to other race's infantry, they also make the scale problem with vehicles even worse.

The guard needs more prominent fluff, everyone thinks they're like this, granted some are but every regiment is different, some look like our modern troops, some are an army of cavemen with lasguns and very basic knowledge of how to use them, some are like literal knights and others are like napoleonic infantry but they're clothes are like carapace armor and their muskets are actually gauss rifles.
>>
>>15698834
Yeah, the Imperial Guard is very diverse. The Death Korps of Krieg are like WWI Germans, I think the Vostroyans are like classic Russians, and the Catachan jungle guys are straight from Rambo/Vasquez from Aliens. They even had a character named "Sly Marbo" back in the 90s, I think, an obvious reference to "Sly" stallone and Rambo.
>>
>>15698834
The fluff always makes it sound retardedly grim. Like how they recycle wounded guardsmen into corpse starch rather then medically treat them (unless they're a high enough rank). Oh, lose a finger heroically holding off the enemy, too bad Private Nobody, you're taking a dive in the food processor.

Absolutely love it. Especially the Imperium's Titan, the Tau's Power Armor.

Not a fan of Eldar's Wraithbone thingy thought, too skinny and the Ork is just plain ugly.

Watching the over the top shit like Imperator titan makes me wish there is an anime like Chrome Shelled Regios but replaces the school with the 60m tall titan and people fighting in Powered Armor and small size Mecha.
>>
>>15699386
>Watching the over the top shit like Imperator titan

I mean, the biggest titans are "just" Gunbuster sized. Just think of stuff like the Macross ships, which are 1km in height and even house an entire city in the original.

The bigger things are, the less that size gets communicated well enough. It's why Sunrise made ATs in VOTOMS so small... sure, they're smaller but at least you can actually portray their size accurately whereas the stuff happening on the inside and outside of the original Macross are largely dissociated.
>>
>>15684040
I just realized; are those supposed to be naked women between the columns on the Imperator's shoulders? Is it a strip club fest for the Emperor? Or are they like naked female Greek statues installed between the pillars for art purposes (like the rest of the castle design)?

Yeah, they are naked virgins meant to be sacrificed in each party to please the machine spirit.

Ork mecha have been my favorites outta 40k, with Eldar and Imperium following. I liked older Ork mecha especially; they had a blockiness (or going back further roundness) to them I really enjoyed the modern machines just don't have.
>>
>>15700711
"Is that necessary" is a question you should never ask about the 40k universe.
>>
>>15700711
Because if you plan on killing the most important corpse in the galaxy then you better plan on using your entire race for the job and even then you only have a less than a 1% chance of victory.
>>
>>15683787
This. W40k probably has the most interesting machines of any western franchise. The only thing stopping me from picking them up is their ridiculous price and maybe their lack of articulation, but that's not even a very big deal. I'd be all over them if they were 65% cheaper.
>>
>>15684079
With TAU mecha, it's as if I like the idea of them more than the way they actually are. I mean, they're essentially Gundam+Armored Core light with the Tau philosophy behind them, which should be cool, but the actual designs always end up looking a little bland and uninteresting. The Riptides are cool, and the XV-88- which is technically a suit, but is large enough to look like a mech- are cool, but the rest are boring and forgettable. The battlesuits themselves are very cool, and so are the vehicles, but for the most part, the mecha have been surprisingly underwhelming.

According to John Blanche, an Emperor Titan would be well over 20 ft tall in 40K scale.

That model isn't close to that height.
>>
>>15699347
>>15699366
As I recall, we used to have a lot of friction between 40k fans and everyone else on /m/ back in the day. When I first came here...2006, early 2007, I think, this was back when I was in college--40k fans would make fun of Japanese mecha aesthetics, and in response Gundam fans would poke fun of "miniatyres." There was even a copypasta going around about how "40k was here to stay" that got some traction back then.

As a result of all this, at least partially, /tg/ was created and it seems to have solved most of the problems. Now that 40k has a dedicated home, 40k fans seem much more chill, and in return most of us are more than happy to discuss its mecha and power armor as we are for anything else.

As a fa/tg/uy, I gotta say, the recent price gouging that GW has been doing is absolutely brutal to the development of a newer, younger generation of buyers and players.

Like, I get that you gotta make money and all, but c'mon...They're not even that high quality...Most of the ones you see on the blogs have all been "instagramified" for the camera with dozens of hours of hard work and subtle modifications. But then again, this isn't exactly breaking news, so take it for what it's worth.

>>
>>15709356
It was pretty harmless, to be honest. Mostly someone posting some furries followed by large amounts of space marines, an occasional "yiff in hell", and that one guy saging in all fields and directing people to /y/. Modern shitposting's much more annoying.
>>
>>15709356
Well, furries were annoying disgusting freaks and /tg/ are shameless nerdy autists, so it can't be helped.
>>
>>15702424
You can get articulation on most models if you put them together properly. Just not in the legs obviously.
>>
>>15709437
Unfortunately in 2008/9 when rubyquest happened there was a stealth furry infiltration of /tg/ resulting from that quest being crossposted by the tripfag on a furry imageboard. The massive influx of furries into /tg/ resulted in an perceptible dark age.

Threads about anthropomorphic animal races and blatantly furry worldbuilding topics abounded, as did gay camwhore threads (yes fucking really). It was a nightmare.
>>
>>15710015
I had no idea furries go that uppity once upon a time. Back then, I was still consumed with Gundam 00 and barely looked beyond /m/. In light of this however, it seems that the fa/tg/uys' anger toward the furry scum was completely righteous and justified.

The drawings that came out of those threads back then were legendary.
>>
>>15709968
But the price, though, the price. I have no inestment in minifigs, so I'm not bitter, but every time, every single time I notice a cool kit, I inevitably shirk away when Isee the price. I was so close to picking up a dreadnought or Tau ship, but then the price is just so forbidding!

He could play Eldar, but they're kinda faggy. The Imperial factions are boneheaded though.

>Let's pull our forces from this sector, leaving it open to the nearby Orks to attack a planet who's atmosphere is toxic to human life because there's some pissant xenos there.
>Let's then send billions of guardsmen down onto the planet, but oops, we forgot our respirators so they all die.
>Let's keep doing this because orders are orders
>A hundred years and a trillions gaurdsmen's lives later, the respirators finally arrive.
>OK, we've capped the planet, oh what's that, looks like the Inquisition is here.
>Now they're doing an exterminatus on the planet while our men are still on it.
>Later, it's found that it was all a big mix up and they were meant to attack another planet, not to mention the Orks have occupied the sector that all the forces were pulled from.

That's an exaggerated case, but I remember there being another, smaller one where the Imperium diverted Space Marine shock troops in extremely rare armor, even by Space Marine standards, from a strategically important battle to take out an enemy propaganda station run by a dozen unarmed xenos, then annihilating it from orbit while the shocktroops are still inside.

I know it's meant to be grimdark to the point of comedy, but I can sympathize with people who don't like roleplaying imbeciles and actually want to play a faction that strategizes instead of screaming about how anything except a direct frontal bayonet assault is a cowardly heresy.
>>
>>15712583
>anything except a direct frontal bayonet assault is a cowardly heresy.

1- Think before negotiating: If you fire at them with everything you have, could you remove the need to negotiate?

2- If negotiation is a necessity, think while doing so: what is the best way to cleave the enemy ambassadors in twain?

3- If all else fails, fighting is always the answer.

4- If fighting fails, you are not fighting hard enough.

5- If you are not fighting hard enough, fight louder.

6- The best approach is always from the front.

7- If the enemy has left their flanks open, feint and then attack from the front.

8- If the front is heavily defended, they are expecting a flank attack. Attack from the front.

9- If their flanks and front is both heavily defended but they are vulnerable to an aerial strike, distract them with aerial bombardment and then attack from the front.

10- If attacking from the front does not work, you are not fighting hard enough. See point 5.

11- If attacking from the front is still not working, you're obviously not attacking their front! See point 6

12- If there is no possibility for victory, attack from the front as furiously and loudly as possible. Remember, the greater the defeat, the greater the moral victory.

13- The more blood your armor is covered with at the end of a battle, the happier the Emperor will be.

14 - If none of these work, begin exterminatus, and blow the fuck out of the planet. If this doesn't work, you are not doing it right. In this case, the best option is to fall back. Fall back and re-group. And attack from the front again. Point 6 applies as well.

Tau are weak and cowardly. Real men do not have to use strategy or think. Those are the tools of the doubter and the heretic, for all you need is belief. It does not matter what you do, for the Emperor shall judge whether you are worthy of victory, not any grand stratagem. Planning shows a lack of faith in the Emperor's hands.

Thought for the day: A mind filled with belief has no room for thought.

I think Orks have a more practical design of Titan than their opponents to a certain degree, as odd as it is to say such.

I think it's impossible to entangle a Gargant's legs and topple it as you could an Imperial, Eldar or Chaos Titan.

I think the Orks even had a weapon for just that in Titanicus that didn't work on their machines.

That's Tuska Daemon-Killa, the only warboss that is directly fighting Chaos, having led a WAAAGH! into the Eye of Terror because he knew where da best fightin woz. Thankfully, Orks don't run on normal lines of thinking so the Warp didn't make their heads explode. He died killing a Daemon Prince in battle and the WAAAGH! devastated dozens of worlds in the Warp before losing steam, and Orks being Orks the Chaos are still fighting infestation on those worlds.

Also, Khorne thought Tuska was so amazing for the sheer balls of what he did, that he resurrected him and his army so that they could die every day in battle against Khorne's armies. Tuska is ok with this.

Dradnoughts are suppose to be the last way ,to somehow, save the life of a dying space marine that is too damaged for any medical procedure to save him, these are basically life support sytem using a mecha as armed wheelchair, so a space marine can still fight.

Primaris marines are suppose to be the new guys, just out of the test tube, withouth any real combat expirience as far a space marine can allow it, and they already have Dreadnoughts.

They were thrown into the front lines during the Ultima crusade and then dispersed among existing chapters, my guess is the had the dreads but no pilots, but I'm certain the crusade changed that.

That's another thing I love about 40k.

The figure in that picture is the closest thing to a benevolent humanist good guy in the 41st millenium.

This. I mean, if the Salamanders insignia and colors didn't tip him off, you'd think all the eagles and inquisition symbols would be a dead giveaway. Not to mention the storm bolter, which IIRC chaos don't have. Or at least they didn't have them a few editions ago; is that still the case?

It's a revival of the Adeptus Titanicus game. You know, the original copy of Battletech that ended up spawning Epic and through it, modern Wh40k.

It's a completely different game, though. Much like Space Hulk, Gorkamorka or Epic.

How does the Imperium even function?

Poorly

Dozens of worlds are lost every year, but when you're Imperium is made of literally millions of planets, you hardly notice.

It doesn't, that's what the comedy is all about.
It's just like Mr. Bean. The guy is incapable of doing the most basic things, but it's funny seeing him fuck up so much.

It's the same with Imperium. British and their slightly weird sense of humor and all.

Shiit, they were pretty cheap back then. Looking at GW's website, a Redemptor dreadnought costs 40 pounds:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Space-Marines-Primaris-Redemptor-Dreadnought

Even accounting for inflation, those little Rogue Trader dreads were pretty cheap. 3.50 pounds in...1988 or so would be like 8 or 10 pounds today, right? That said, the Redemptor is much bigger and also comes with all of its various parts, whereas for the old dreadnoughts, the ad says you have to buy each weapon on its own.

40k doesn't really have anything close to what srw wants. I love 40k but that would be just as bad as putting something from battletech in there. Like the only thing that comes to mind for 40k would either need to be a more humanoid dreadnought with some mobility like the contemptor or some dumb white scars imperial knight asspull, and even then, they pale in comparison to the sheer majority of the hero roster.
I could see the Orks making an appearance over literally every other faction, if for nothing else than comic relief. Let the green skins get a hold of a mass production Eva, anything out og Mezinger, or even a ball, and they could go ham.
