Kaori Shintani, out of pla-plate, putty and a Revell 1:1200 kit.
...kidding. Or maybe I'm not. Shintani did assistant work for Leiji and that included reference models, that part is legit truth.

The original concept already involved a space ship (but it used an asteroid armor that then became a Saturn-like ring when in battle) in a quest to Iscandar, the "Rajendorans" making Earth inhabitable and the ship going to Iscandar to restore Earth.
It already involved characters that basically took Yuki and Susumu Kodai's roles (although Yuki's description makes her sound more tomboyish). Analyser also was there, including specific stuff like pulling Yuki's skirt.
Most of the rest of the cast was heavily changed though. The original Okita/Admiral was crippled in the first battle, and at a certain point would be replaced by younger captain, who wasn't the Kodai character. There'd be a love triangle involving a rival to Kodai and Yuki, a burly brawler type who'd also go in the ground missions alongside Kodai.
The Rajendorans wouldn't be human-like, although they'd still be around human size - having various forms due to being a race that evolved in space. In the end, there would still be the reveal that Rajendorans were making Earth inhabitable because they needed that environment, but here the Yamato itself would use the Radiation cleaning device to destroy their home planet.
Originally, by the time they arrived back to Earth, there would only be one survivor in the Yamato, a minor character.

Neither. There was many other talents involved.
