The more they expand on his story in The Origin the more easy I find it to hate him.

He's the Trotsky of the Gundam world. Even though Char/Trotsky is psychotic and would probably have caused more death and destruction than the Zabis/Stalin did, he had the more utopian vision for society and because he was the one that was "supposed" to be inherit the leadership of Zeon/Soviet Union, people will forever romanticize and speculate over how great he would have been if only he were given his rightful place.

Dozle and Gihren alone have at least as much confidence as him each. Kycilia doesn't have much less either. None of the protagonists do, by design, but a fair few antagonists do.

Other than that, stories of youthful revenge are easier to find compelling rather than slow-boil-development into maturity.
He's a man determined to do justice by his own hands. Even if he's near-sighted in his pursuits you can't help but admire someone who makes his claims so passionately.

Everyone like an Ace pilot. Char from the beginning was hyped up. He didnt disappoint completely in that regard. Also the whole hunt for red October deal they were doing with white base only made him seem more threatening and dangerous. After learning more about his ideals you find out he's a tragic character with several flaws. It was easy to blame Amuro for fucking up because he was just a kid, but Char always was held to a higher bar i felt.

Because we are the audience. As the audience we know that the Zabis murdered his father and attempted to kill him as a child multiple times. As an individual we have an emotional investment where we wouldn't for a group of people, even in real life (for example Yemeni children who get killed).
