Just gotta say, this is probably my favorite first episode of the season.
>that music
>that atmosphere
>all the robo noises Reg makes
pretty decent character animation too, aside from the weird snake chase sequence.
>>
Picked it up at a wim.

I was pleasantly surprised.

Great backgrounds/bgm.

Is this one of those shows with cute art that is depressing as shit?

Pretty much. On that note, still annoyed at Alien Nine not getting a full adaptation though.

Nonsense, its very optimistic and cheerful.
There's just a few sad scenes, but you can't have the ups without the downs.

Nanachis fluff is so legendary it makes even a robots trouser torpedo rise into firing position

As to the manga, its unsurprisingly a crapsack world (the author is not afraid of showing the effects of the abyss in horrifying detail) , but its the interactions between the characters that make the manga glow

Poor Mitty though...

>>
>>15676556
>I've heard the manga is too edgy even for the edgiest kids. Is that true?

Not really. Elfen Lied was edgy, Akumetsu was edgy, Narutaru was somewhat edgy, this one's just about a little girl, a shota robot and Mengele's bunny assistant trying to get to the lowest point of an extremely dangerous cave system, with zero hope of seeing the sunlight ever again.

The edgy characters they meet along the way are basically broken and barely human. They range from people who think that anything but cruelty will just get you killed by the cave ASAP to people who became mass-murderers in order to find the means of making working the caves safer and exiting them possible.

It's edgy.
>>
>>15676120

Seeing how this series loves sexualizing lil kids and torturing them, wouldn't be surprised if there was some NTR rape in there somewhere.
>>
>>15677268
Not really. The dude performing the vivsection basically is a monster who's been living at the edge of the last point-of-no-return for years. Edgy comics paint this sort of behaviour par the course for regular people.
>>
>>15677325
Dunno man. By your definition it's edgy only if it tries to normalize monstrous behavior as something all people actually do all the time.

Considering my reaction to that one linked page was "wtf holy shit", I'd say it looks pretty edgy alright.
>>
>>15672546
>all the robo noises Reg makes
The SFX made me cum.
>>
>>15677372
Let's say it's pretty low on edge. There's a lot of really fucked-up shit happening, but it's perpetuated by only very few folks who have either given up on or have been robbed of most of their humanity in order to live in hell.

It ain't about kids going on murder-sprees on a sunday as soon as they got the ability to, it ain't about terrorism and assassinations not really working because your opponents are even more reprehensible and their system being too established to perish upon their death and it ain't about folks normalizing genocide and torture because that's totally what they are doing anyway.
>>
>>15677372
Not him, but I wouldn't call this edgy either. Its got a different kind of atmosphere around it than edgy.
Edgy has this tryhard feeling to it, it's not something I got from this manga.

I mean, you wouldn't call every horror movie/story created "edgy" either. So there is some difference to it.
>>
>>15677417
Edgy is not only about themes but also about presentation.

If it looks like a guro fetishist's wet dream, it's edgy.

Good to see Dr. Steinman expanding his practice to underaged robot girls. It isn't just humans being tortured by the tyranny of symmetry.
>>
>>15677417
Anon, you have a very narrow definition of edgy that doesn't align with reality.

>>15677424
Except there are quite a few horror genres that are edgy by their very nature. Slasher films, for one.

Not all horror movies are slasher flicks.
>>
>>15677637

A series that presents itself with a cutesy art style just to sucker punch you with child guro is edgy. Are you gonna tell me that Happy Tree Friends isn't edgy too?
>>
>>15678138
No, having bad things happen to cute characters is not edgy. Are you retarded?
>>
>>15678146

Needlessly torturing innocent characters is one of the most try hard things you can do. Making them cute and children makes it even moreso, the fuck you think is edgy then?
>>
>>15678158
>Needlessly torturing innocent characters is one of the most try hard things you can do.
If its in service to the fucking plot and characterization of the characters, its not needless, dumbass.
Edgy to me is the author using the story to put out some misanthropic message, or dragging the torture scenes for chapters on end, or having every page have full on snuff and guro.
Made in Abyss is the direct opposite of that, it uses gore sparingly. The two or three spreads you always see of Reg getting experimented on, Nanachi and Mitty being transformed, and Prushka getting boxed make up 90% of all the gore scenes in the manga. Furthermore, the message of the story isn't something like "humanity is evil" or what have you.

Would you classify Old Yeller as edgy because the kid has to blow his dogs brains out?
>>
>>15677372

Wtf holy shit is horror. Sakamoto666's writings are edgy.

Edgy by definition is something that is vile in the most stupid way possible, that it becomes a caricature of what horror should be.

Bonedread is pure horror. As the story develops with him, it becomes more and more obvious that he's no longer human, but that somewhere along the way after using the artifact to imprint himself across multiple hosts, all that's ultimately left is higher level thought process tied to a reptile-like organism and an absurd pursuit of knowledge.

It would be akin to taking a Tyrannosaurus Rex and giving him Josef Mengele's intellect/desire for knowledge, and giving it an unkillable monstrous form that can be condensed, at will, into a human shape. This, is not edgy; if anything, its terrifying.

And that's ultimately what Made in Abyss does with Bonedread's character.
>>
>>15672529
which manga is this based on?

He's totally an amnesiac not!Kamen Rider. All the mechanical bits, but also the human guts (and crown jewels along his lancer). A cyborg with the blessing of the abyss (that doesn't turn him into a bunny).
>>
Anybody not watching this show should pick it up. It has the same director as Monster, Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai, and DNA Sights 999.9.
>>
I just realized after watching the first episode. Reg totally lost his memory because of the electric shock, didn't he? Its Riko's fault isnt it?
