I think one of the Barzam's unique features was having the rifle draw power directly from the reactor, instead of using charge packs.

I think it's for reloading the rifle. Maybe it's kept attached so the charge won't deplete but the rifle has way more dexterity without the cable. I find it a nuisance, honestly.

In the same game, the Marasai's beam gun can fire up to three round burst, but I wouldn't say it's canon since it was never shown doing that in the anime (and the Marasai uses the same beam gun as the Hizack).

Why does Barzam have a fucked up looking rifle?

It looks like it trims small branches off trees, not a brutal weapon for blasting away AEUG scum
