Disappointing. You can tell Nihei got bored/burnt out with Sidonia pretty quickly (likely because he had never done a series that long before) and it slumps really hard in the middle. It never manages to recover from that slump and the ending just feels like he wanted to just get it over with already. I remember seeing somewhere that he made Sidonia for his daughter or something, who dismissed it because she thought Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online were "cooler," which probably did a number on his ego and motivation.

I'm still pissed about the ending. I really liked the series and the way Niehi finished it wasn't just unsatisfying but it also felt rushed and half-assed.

I thought the anime was pretty fun. Say what you will about the CG, the work they put into Tanikaze's facial expressions was pretty impressive.
