Yeah I know this is more of an anime board but screw it. The comics are currently shit, /co/ doesn't read comics and Post-IM1 Tony has been awful, so post some cool Iron Man armors and shit.

I'll start with the first Ultimate one.

Shell head deserves more love. I used to find it boring but it grew on me.

I get what you mean about /co/, I used to go there all the time, now it's 50% cancerous cartoon fanbase and all Marvel comics are shit. I just go there to read the storytimes of pain, which Became a regular thing now.

IM is one of those characters that always had good stories. But because of the relaunches, everybody thinks that aside from Demon in a Bottle, there's nothing worthwhile. Which is pretty bull. But after the MCU, his comics did legitimately turn to shit, around 2012 or so.

As for /co/, it really is shit at this point. Companywars, memes, waifuthreads and shitty cartoons. Pretty terrible all around.

The Ultimate armor is one of my faves, but I really hated that early "blue Tony" origin. It was just trash. And much as I hate the Bendis run, the current suit is sleek. Stupid and way too OP without having any feats (can you say Bendis?) but still, cool.
>>
>>15661906
>IM is one of those characters that always had good stories.
Don't lie. Iron Man was a B-list hero for a reason. No one cared about his stories because nothing of note was going on. It's also why he was a key Avenger for most of the run when the title was concerned with giving characters a shared book when they couldn't pull in their own. He's a founding member with more star power than some of the other cast, but not to the level that the X-men were pulling.
>>
>>15661962
This
the Avengers were Cap, Iron Man, and some other jobbers that can't carry their own books
>>
>>15661856

This suit looked different from each angle. It's a nice design overall except for the garbage helmet.
>>
>>15661962

Story telling quality has very little to do with popularity.
>>
>>15661962
>>15661998

If he can't carry his own book, then why has he continuously had one for fifty years?
>>
>>15661962
Just because he was a B-Lister doesn't mean he didn't have good stories. There are tons of comics that are "Z-List" and are infinitely better than the A-Listers.

And besides, taking Spider-Man and his tens of thousands of issues into account, how many good stories would an average person manage to name? Does that mean that he has only those few good stories and the rest is just exposure?

And as for the X-Men, sure, they were popular. But that doesn't mean they were good. Noseless Wolverine, X-Treme X-Men, Claremont's Return, etc. They were action-oriented Baycomics for most of the 90s.

Iron Man may not have had his super-well known stories like the Night Gwen Stacy Died or Kraven's Last Hunt, but his stories were always interesting. It's not like anybody can jut name Gruenwald Cap stories, but it is considered a classic run.
>>
>>15662008
I liked the helmet tbqh. Maybe just because it was different from the 616 version. But I liked it, alongside the overall design.

>Post-IM1 Tony has been awful
Post IM1 Tony has been the best iteration of Tony Stark there is.

I mean, it's like 616 Stark, but the dickish side of him has some actual valid and even sometimes sympathetic reasoning behind it.

MCU Tony Stark is probably the most interesting mainstream cape character out there right now, and I say that as someone that's been reading Marvel and DC since the 80's. His imperfections make him fascinating. Anyone that hates him is looking at him like a superhero that should be an icon for righteousness and resolute incorruptibility, whereas Stark's always been more of a mad scientist trying his absolute best to do the right thing.

A lot of that has to do with RDJ's personal, masterful portrayal of the character throughout his development instead of having to read internal diatribes in his own book that mildly and suspiciously conflict with his actions in other comics by different writers.

>>15661906
>IM is one of those characters that always had good stories. But because of the relaunches, everybody thinks that aside from Demon in a Bottle, there's nothing worthwhile. Which is pretty bull. But after the MCU, his comics did legitimately turn to shit, around 2012 or so.
Also this. Vol 3 and 4 are probably my favorite Iron Man, and while Vol 33 starts in 1998, Vol 4 is fairly recent and had the most influence on the character people these days are most familiar with.
>>
>>15664031
I dislike the RDJ version because it's too "neat". No alcoholism, no womanizing aspects (instead settling down with the bland Pepper), no transhumanism, etc, etc. He's just not as good as I'd like him to be. IMHO always.

As for Vols, I will say that the Ellis/Knauf/Director of Shield is probably my favorite as well, but I really love the entire first vol. Hell, even the Liefield abomination is still somewhat enjoyable.

I unironically think the original grey suit is the best Iron Man design, by far.

There's something out that simple, old school look it has going on that I love, it strikes me as the most pure, iconic vision of an "iron man" from an age when capeshit comics didn't take themselves too seriously and start over-designing costumes for pointless attempts at realism.

The face design looks better than most other suits, it conveys a bit of emotion whereas most other iron man designs feel completely neutral and emotionless, this one properly hints that there's a human being behind the mechanical exterior, but does so without looking like the metal is going soft and fleshy to make an angry face.

Compared to later designs it's one of the only ones that actually looks like a suit of solid metal, while not being overdesigned with too many unnecessary details.

It sorta has a dieselpunk appearance, as well as a kind of German expressionist look similar to Maria from Metropolis.

Original Iron Man best Iron Man.

I love this design for the same reason. I don't think the majority black with red highlights really works, but majority silver with black and gold works amazingly in my opinion. Tony used a more traditionally painted red and gold suit fir a while with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and while I liked the idea of the color scheme somewhat mimicking musculature I didn't like the execution, more than anything though I hated the helmet.
>>
>>15664146
Cool reasoning. From a fan standpoint, I like the Endo-Sym or Bleeding Edge suits because they give Tony more feats. But they docreate tons of problems in-universe, and ruin the "metal suit" feel. For my money, the Extremis armor was near perfect.
>>
>>15664326

This is the one I mean; there's some striations on the chest plates that remind me of muscle, though I dot know how deliberate that is really. The body is fine I suppose, I just hate the helmet and especially the yellow slashes running vertically along the skull.

Stop. Its a stupid term that promotes the retarded notion that a character is as good as its sales. And yes, he had good stories, just because Moore or Morrison didn´t write a pretentious "graphic novel" with im doesn't make him bad.

>No alcoholism, no womanizing aspects (instead settling down with the bland Pepper)
To be fair alcoholism hasn't been an issue in comics that much after the 80s. Only when a writer wants to make a cheap callback to DiaB.
And his womanizing aspect isn't as relevant as people think, a defining aspect of Tony's different eras as character are the girl he fell in love with and won't end up with for some reason Bethany will always be best waifu.
>>
>>15664146
From the comics my favs are classic, modular (mostly nostalgia for the 90s show but it does look good) and Extremis. BE is, I feel, a bit overrated.
>>
>>15664454
The Ewing mini was that with the Soviet Robot on the moon and the Doom from the future, right?

>>15664459
I'd say the womanizing aspect was a fairly big part. Due to Howard's abuse he felt he needed to become more "manly" and thus turned to extreme sports and one night stands. Apart from the in-universe reason, him being James Bond x Q was a big part of why readers back then liked him.

I'm not in favor of "lol so random" Tony, I just like him having vices and whatnot. As for best girl... Widow still gets my vote. Sure, it was based on deceit and apart from some one-night-stands nothing had come out of it, but I like pairing. Rumiko wasn't that bad either.

In Ultimates, Stark has a sentient tumor in his brain that manifests (to him) as a small child named Anthony. This tumor can interface with technology similarly to how 616 Tony could with Extremis. There's actually a page where Stark's trying to disable a nuke mid-flight, and his mental projection of Anthony is riding it Dr. Strangelove-style.

Silver Centurion should have been the star suit of Iron Man 3 instead of Marl XLII. It was a big deal in the comics, particularly in regards to Stark handling his demons, so it seems far more thematically fitting for it to be used in the primary suit in the film.
>>
>>15670885
>It was a big deal in the comics
I'd be surprised is the director of this shit even knew Iron Man came from comics.
>>
>>15671423
Iron Man 3 is basically a big excuse to reference as many different armors as possible. Somebody in the production crew knew shit about comics, even if it was the Marvel Bigwig up top yelling, "MORE ARMORS! WE NEED TO SELL TOYS!" There was some guy in there somewhere who knew shit that could have gone, "Hey, you know, this one's way better. Why don't we make this one the main one?"

If any armor got screwed it that movie it was Heartbreaker. Heartbreaker was sex but I don't think it's ever even worn.
>>
>>15670711

Is there even anything in Eva he would care about? The only things it has are the Eva's restraining armor, the N2 mines and the positron rifle. None of which he'd be interested in, and which he's also designed stuff more powerful than even if he was. He has access to intellstellar and outright magical tech if he wants, nothing in Eva or Gundam will interest him, beyond maybe the solar drives in 00 given the transhuman aspect.

>>15670885

So what? Being big in the comics has nothing to do with the films. It can influence it, but it doesn't have to. Nor should it have to, since they're only inspiration and the films will be better charting their own course, good or bad.

Neo-Classic with the Thermos boots is where my money's at. And it comes in at the climax of the Armor Wars story.

>>
>>15671942

An AT field isn't technology though, it's physiology and psychology. He'd use it if he could erect one, but he couldn't just build one.
>>
>>15671965
I remember Modular and Extremis lasting about five years each. Extremis has certainly had a lasting impact past that, at least. Before that design almost every armor had visible muscles showing through the suit, like a conventional superhero, but since then it's always been drawn as armor. He does change his costume more than anybody else, though.

He's a very toyetic character, and characters who sell toys get new looks a lot. Just look at how many costumes Captain America has been through since his movies started getting big. I think over half of the costumes that Cap has ever worn have been in the past ten years.
>>
>>15671994
>he couldn't just build one.
that sounds like a challenge
>>
>>15671996

Janet Van Dyne has a new costume every other issue, so she probably outdoes Tony, but she's a fashionista and it's part of her characterisation that she loves trying new outfits and does it for no real practical purpose.

Honestly from the beginning of the first Michelinie & Bob Layton run up until the end of Len Kaminski's run, Iron Man was a pretty solid book. There isn't a lot that's "classic" but it was consistently good which is a lot better than many other comic characters with spotty histories.

After that though everything sort of went to shit with a few bright spots like Busiek's run and the Knauf's run. I can take or leave Fraction's Iron Man. Everything in the last few years has been pretty blah.
>>
>>15664345
They were part of the weaker end of Kaminski's run due to forced bullshit from the executives but I still enjoyed them. As a writer he focused a lot on the technical aspects which I appreciated. It also only lasted two years due to those same fuckwit executives.

The anti-commie stuff died off after Vietnam. He developed more of a character in the run that included Demon in a Bottle. From there he started transitioning into the vice-ridden genius and the futurist inventor instead of the All-American Military Industrial Complex Man from the 60's and early 70's.

Then RDJ's version came along and they kept the self-destructive futurist bits and added several layers of snark, which he probably needed for a cinematic version to work honestly.

I read the first chapter or two and found it fairly boring personally. It's Garth Ennis writing a super hero tale, and Garth Ennis hates the execution of most heroes even if I'm pretty sure he doesn't hate the actual concept given how he portrayed Superman in Hitman. He was attempting to add humanity to them by focusing on how heroes could be socially amazing but personally awful, and it just came across as shock for shocks sake I guess, with nothing behind it. It might have changed over time, but those first issues didn't wow me. I think Nextwave (despite the somewhat annoying humour), Ex Machina, Powers and probably a lot of other works do the same concept better, even if they have their own problems.

Hah, missed that. Thought it was Peggy Carter or someone since she's apparently appearing in the film. Ant-man is the only one missing so really, and certainly the only leading film character not there since no one from Doctor Strange besides Strange himself is there. How odd. Technically they could say he's too small to see or something, but he's definitely listed as being in the film and his own wasn't a flop or anything to say they wouldn't want to feature him so his absence is definitely notable.

I also don't like the fact that it's impossible to make a practical suit of. I know that only Iron Man ever actually uses full practical suits, but making sure that they COULD be built and worn still lent credibility to some of the later designs. A suit that can obviously only exist in CGI is obviously CGI, though, plus it means that even high quality figures can't be screen accurate unless they sacrifice posability.

Without shoulders and the rest of the body for scale, the "neck" could be super thick and the rest really armoured and that's where his head actually is, and the face is an ornament on top of his head or something to make him look taller/larger/more imposing or just a fake head like good ol' Cherno Alpha.

Personally, I think it's great. Looks like a perfected version of the Mark 42 with stylistic touches referencing past armors.

>>15737229
I'm a sucker for the armor that opens up. It's the sweet spot of futuristic mechanical quick-changes.

I actually love the nanomachines too, but it looked weird depending on who was drawing the sequence. Seems like one of those rare things that would look better in live action than the page.
>>
Seeing the little tidbits of of the new armor from Infinity Wars I'm wondering of perhaps Tony's Spider man suits are some kind of early prototype for what he's wearing.

Think about it. They're seemingly a malleable, reshapable material that is loaded with tech. Maybe there is some linage in his designs between the suits he makes for Peter and what he ends up with in Infinity War.

As cool as that is, I still wish he wasn't so heavily involved in the creation of the Spidey suit. They really fucked Peter's presence in the MCU up by making him so connected to Stark.

>>15738016
Oh yea of little faith.

>ELS
He's incorporated alien tech into his armor before.

>PsychoframeGod Gundam
A little iffy. He built a suit that could respond to his brain waves body back in the 80s, and he's had a couple remotely piloted suits since. If he ever needed to make an armor that could duplicate chi attacks, he probably could.

Speaking of which, I'm surprised they haven't come up with an excuse to have him team-up with Iron Fist for some mecha Kung Fu action.
>>
>>1574129

> They really fucked Peter's presence in the MCU up by making him so connected to Stark.

How exactly? It seems fine to me.
>>
>>15741291

He's also had (and discarded) several shape shifting armors that could make any weapon he could imagine now and he used extremis to make himself a technopath capable of communicating mentally with any and all technology. I believe War Machine also briefly used some alien armor that could combine reproduce most any weapon, including remote drones and also adapt to a lot of things. The only thing Tony may not have already produced in some way is God Gundam like armor and he'd have no reason to because he can't do martial arts, so forging an armor that works via martial arts would be pointless. At best all he'd want to do is reproduce the effects those martial arts produce, which he's kind of done regardless. He already uses big beams as his main weapon and controls his suit via movement, thought and voice and he can do things like reproduce his form by simply making new armors and remote controlling them (or handing them off to an AI to control) or using a holographic device to confuse the enemy.
>>
>>15741695
Peter's a self-made hero, even more so than Stark, albeit on a budget. Having him act so blatantly "NOTICE ME, SENPAI!" and relying so heavily on Stark technologically and emotionally feels a little insulting. Like they couldn't find a way to differentiate him prior version and fit him into the universe without making him Stark's #1 fanboy. I know part of Homecoming was getting him to be more independent and use his own ingenuity, but they really could have found a better way to present that concept.

Also the idea that he can build his own webshooters and fancy goggles on the cheap but can't even put a decent bodysuit together rubs me the wrong way. I know it's petty in the grand scheme of things, but come on.

Finally, the obvious fact they don't really have a plan for the character in the MCU besides keeping Sony afloat on good will long enough so they can try to spin-off their own mini-universe AGAIN, but I'm digressing at this point.

>>15741924
Oh yeah, I forgot about the technopathy. Thanks for the reminder.
>>
>>15742045

Peter might historically have been a genius scientist, but the comics rarely ever focused on that and usually left it at "built webshooters/fluid". Which he also did in this version. Peter only being able to cobble together a natty suit and relying on Stark for a tailored one feels more in line with his normal characterization frankly, since being able to build a technological item like a webshooter or chemical one like fluid is almost entirely a different skill set than being able to make a one piece suit, which is more about stitching and dying than scientific know how.

I don't think "self-made" really applies to Peter either honestly, especially in comparison to Stark, since Peter is a hero because of an accident reliant on someone else's science. He became a hero out of that, but Stark made himself a hero almost entirely on his own. Everything you dislike about Homecoming and how it treated Peter is something I like about it by the sounds of things.
>>
>>15741924
>The only thing Tony may not have already produced in some way is God Gundam like armor and he'd have no reason to because he can't do martial arts
Actually, just about every incarnation of Stark is pretty well-versed in martial arts, at least for the Average human. There's been scenarios wherehe's fought several goons at once with no suit and came out on top.

He's no Cap or Domon, but most incarnations of Tony Stark would probably beat a Navy SEAL in hand to hand combat pretty competently.

>>15742091
>I don't think "self-made" really applies to Peter either honestly, especially in comparison to Stark, since Peter is a hero because of an accident reliant on someone else's science.

I guess I misspoke. I meant he's able to build his own equipment without the benefit of billions of dollars of tech at his disposal. Even then, that's kind of splitting hairs, since Stark wouldn't have survived very long after the explosion without Yinsen's assistance. They both wouldn't be heroes without certain twists of fate.

I suppose I am more upset at the changes to the character to make Peter different from his previous movie incarnations. With each iteration he seems arguably closer to the comics in terms of general skill, but his personality winds up suffering in some way.

>>15742849
>No they have doubled down, she is now asserted herself as queen of Latveria.

God damn do I hate modern Marvel and their tumblr-tier bullshit. I feel fortunate to have grown up in a better time for capeshit, able to see the stories I read as a kid get brought to the big screen, but I feel bad for kids who go see the latest Marvel movie and then try to get into the comics. "Why's Iron Man a girl? Why's Thor a girl? Why's the Hulk Asian? Why's Captain America black? Where are the guys from the movies?"

More on topic, I have always enjoyed the Iron Man aesthetic. I appreciate the smooth lines and gold accents. I get hyped whenever a new movie comes out because I like seeing what new suit they'll have Iron Man wear. The armor up/down sequences are also especially gratifying.

>Why's Captain America black?
That one's entirely acceptable, given than Sam Wilson has been a supporting Captain America character for quite awhile, not to mention is a popular character in the MCU.

It's not the far left that's at fault, its the writers with a lack of talent foe the medium. Ms. Marvel is tumblr-tier as fuck, especially with two out of three artists that worked on it, but it's probably one of the only enjoyable books Marvel has going on right now.

Gwenpool, to my , is also an surprisingly great read, and in all actuality, in spite of the protagonist's unconventional hair color, it's not tumblr-tier in any capacity! Christopher Hastings and Gurihiru have done the impossible with a spinoff based a gwen stavy variant cover

My point is, it's not the tumblr-ness that's wrong with Marvel, these days; it's the writer's and their incompetence, most of them being just average white dudes that have adopted a left-wing worldview without the experiences or reasoning that might give such a worldview any relatable context, especially when it bleeds into their work, which is why it's so cringey when a Marvel character suddenly becomes a mouthpiece for whatever sociology professor-tier rhetoric they might have up their sleeve.

I've heard good stuff about Gwenpool. I liked Doctor McNinja, so I'd probably like the rest of Hastings's stuff. I stopped following Iron Man after he made that weird app that made people skinny and hot and then started charging for it. I'm tired of being disappointed and let down by comics. Ah, I see I was worried for nothing. Those are some pretty good picks.

As for whether current DC's worth it, that depends. They're currently taking a more back-to-basics approach while referencing and incorporating old continuity into the line. Still, I'd have to say the best books coming out so far are New Super-Man and Deathstroke. I've also heard good things about the new Doom Patrol.

>Is there a torrent that'd catch me up?
No torrents so far, but you if you look up DC Rebirth: Deluxe Edition, you should find a good "starter pack" on Get Comics. The other books I mentioned can be found in /co/'s Win-O threads in the archives.

>Anything /m/ I should check out once I've got more space on my tablet?

Ironically, the 12-issue Vision miniseries from Marvel. It's more of a sci-fi psychological horror story about a robot trying to start a family, and it's the best book Marvel's put out in the last decade.
