***READ THE GUIDE***
For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==
Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)
Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.
Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31
so who else is planning to mod the new fumina? what ever happened to the anon with the acguy fumina who posted here?
>>15657470
How is the groupbuild going for everyone?
So far I have done a few things I haven't done before, such as drill holes and glue extra pieces on, though I have only used builders parts and campaign parts/an easy kitbash that required holes, so nothing complicated, but still something new.
I also tried out using a chipping fluid which has worked well for the most part, and I will do a bunch of other weathering related things for the first time as well.
>>15657525
I just finished mine today. I think I could have done the leg coverings better, and the paint around the mega particle cannons could be cleaner, but overall, I'm happy with the result.
What is the worst kit you've built? The fucking MG Unicorn was the fucking worst, it was a slog to get through. The legs were so fucking boring to build, and overall it was just not fun. I don't even know why I didn't like the build process, it's just out of all the kits I've made the Unicorn was the worst.
>>15657547
I've always wondered when I see people do this, but what's your process on achieving that look for the beam saber effect parts? It looks really nice.
Also really like your build in general anon
>>15657551
I didn't hate my mg Banshee build, but the legs were definitely not a fun part of the build, nor were the shoulders
>>15657608
Thanks, man!
All I did to achieve that look was paint the whole thing pink, then airbrushed a white gradient in the middle. For a little extra, I heavily diluted some Tamiya Chrome Silver in Pledge, so the clear coat has a slight sparkle to it.
>>15657617
Great, thank you! The effect parts have really been getting full looking to me, so this is a great help.
>>15657646
Dull**
>>15657467
>>15657467
Hey, that's me.
Got a couple more kits in today. I'm about done with the Guntank. It's pretty bland colorwise, so it's gonna be a fun kit to practice detailing. I'm tempted to try hand painting the whole thing, but I'll probably spray it and hand paint the small stuff.
>>15657525
Depression and stress hit me hard so I haven't done any work in weeks. Probably not gonna finish the Virtue I had planned in time for the deadline but oh well.
>>15657829
I feel you. I've had a bunch of work related stress the past couple weeks. Everyone is doing some mandatory overtime, and I'm plain burnt out. This Guntank has helped me decompress, though. One gin away from finished snapping.
>>15657617
What was your final coat/tip coat? Also Future or something different?
>>15657934
Future mixed with Tamiya Flat Base.
>>15657946
Ah, I've used that trick as well for my first painted model, the old HGUC Gouf. I'm working on a second model currently but it's customized so it takes awhile. Have you used Tamiya Flat Clear, just their own topcoat? I bought some bottles to try it and compare to the Future mix.
>>15658047
And some work in progress painting for the current build.
>>15657804
Wait, the Nu Ver Ka has some Unicorn Psycho Frame running through it?
That's kinda neat.
>>15658198
It's pretty neat and impressive, especially once all eight funnels are active.
So /m/ did I do good ?
>>15658250
You better not just snap fit that thing anon, make it worth buying.
>>15658250
>Still in box
0/10 kys
>>15657551
The legs being a nightmare seems to be common with the Unicorn across all grades. The HG Unicorn was my second kit and it took me everything in my power to get past that hump because it felt like they held up the whole process.
>>15658265
i was thinking of two toning the wings and stuff with like a lighter green. def painting the white trim maybe using that metal leaf stuff i dunno !?! the worlds my oyster you know?
>>15658347
btw i mean the trim stuff on the arms around the wrist
>>15658352
The "Sleeves"
The rest of the parts for my Nobel GM finally arrived.
Gonna scratch build the skirts, chest details, knees, shoulders, shorten the feet to get rid of the high heel look, modify the head a bit, then paint it.
It'll probably be a while before I finish any of that though, I still want to enter the THICC-build, I have some tank kits to finish, and my nephew wants me to help him build and paint a HG Loto.
Any tips for how to get the off-white color of the normal GM?
I'm just gonna use krylon or rustoleum spray cans, would priming it green then spraying white on top do the job?
This old GM is a surprisingly good looking but simple model compared to some of the other older ones I've built, I want to use what's left of it for something like a GM light armor but >no head
>>15657408
shopvac with nylon stocking over the end
Also, any tips for how to seam weld the head but still but still be able to keep the visor and camera completely clean?
I tried masking the visor on that Patlabor kit in the background and it turned out poorly, I'd prefer to have the visor as a separate piece I can put in after painting the head, and I want to put a shiny silver piece behind it to reflect light back through the visor and look all nice.
I'm gonna cut those round circular parts out, they're more of a challange to seem weld, and I can just scratch build some replacement versions that'll look a bit better thanks to having a real panel line, might even make an extra piece to show them pulled out to reveal that they're Vulcan ammo drums like i seem to remember seeing in some piece of artwork.
>>15658368
>Nobel GM
This is based off the high grade model ?
>>15658395
Yeah, wanted to build a cute GM girl and I figured combining the old HG GM with the HG Nobel Gundam would be the best way to do it.
She'll contrast nicely with the thiccness of this Zaku I if I ever make a kit of it, I had an idea to combine the 80s model with a HG+lots of pla-plate/clay/sanding to get the proportions and look of this artwork.
I might've done that for the thicc-build but I barely had enough money for the GM and Nobell Gundam.
There are a lot of flaws here and there, but I'm happy that I finally graduated from snap-fit.
This is my WIP of groupbuild, thank group build guys and all participant for inspiring me to do custom
>>15658545
>>15658047
Yeah, I've used it before. I used it for all my builds prior to this one, actually. I think the flat clear is a little more matte, but I could probably achieve the same effect by adding more flat base next time.

Hey man, I'd see if you could enter this guy for the THICCbuild. He's appropriately THICC.
>>15658549
That's good to know, I want a flatter look than on that Gouf for some works, and not needing to mess around with imprecise ratios is helpful. Any thoughts on >>15658105?
>>15658617
>>15658105
I'm no expert, I only started seriously painting last year. I like the colors, but I think the metalic on the shovel(?) could be smoother. Was that an issue with the paint, or the piece itself?
>>15658642
The piece was fully scratch built, and so out thing it over meant there was less perfection in angles/curvature I guess as opposed to machine molding Bandai does. I couldn't sand the putty further without the piece detaching segments. But I'm going to cover it with grime and dirt so the texture might not be so bad.
I'm gonna be at anime expo for the next few days. Anyone know of any booths with P-Bandai stuff? Also I'd be down to buy a fellow /m/an a beer or go for a toke if any of you wanted to meet up.
>>15658656
Oh, cool. Now I'm excited to see how it turns out!
>>15658667
Thank you for the motivation. I really only have a few parts left unprimed, some that needed seam correction and got it and 2 hard parts that I'm doing scratch building on with lots of mistakes because it's my first time. Figuring out how to make desired results but not look ugly.
Which colour scheme looks better?
>>15658705
I barely see changes aside from the bottom of the feet not being red.
>>15658714
one's orange, one's yellow.
>>15658705
The shade of yellow on the left looks better than on the right. Otherwise >>15658714

Does anyone have a HG Kampfer AND HG Grimgerde or Reincar? Curious if the shoulders/arms fit the kampfer, they seem tallgeese-ish and I think that could work with the kampfer
Why do people with no business building gunpla the people who want to be known? This guy's "gunpla review page" is just himself describing his ineptitude. He literally destroyed the waterslide decals. Those decals are what makes that P Bandai kit 4x the price of the original release.
>>15658974
>I did prime the kit
>After applying the waterslides
?????????
>finally about to start my first painted kit
>feel super guilty about the kits i've already built that are just snap builds and panel lines
is a pre-built K'Shatriya worth disaseembling and repainting? i don't want to break it, but maybe I'd be better off just getting the repaired K'Shatriya?
>>15657525
I've decided on the concept, cleaned and assembled most of the parts I'll be using but haven't had the time to do anything more due to finals. I hope there aren't too many people using the Mobile Worker as a base because it's the only actually kind of thicc kit I have.
>>15658391
Seconding this request on how to separate the visors properly,
also requesting how to do it for the GM Quel's visor while assembling the head separately
>>15658432
If you end up doing that, I'd like to see your progress and maybe a few steps.
>>15657470
>>15657525
if i used a gusion but with the torso and waist of the rebake would it still be allowed?
>>15658391
Masking for the visor should be really easy though. A lot less effort than anything else.
Just stuff some tape on it.
>>15659152
You just used Gusion Rebake.
>>15659201
i meant the fat arms and legs of the normal gusion
>>15658198
Yeah. It's got a small transformation gimmick where all the armor kind of just pops open slightly to reveal it. It's really cool just looking through the box and manual. I'm excited to start on this thing.
>>15659031
There's no apostrophe in the name, but yes. Kshatriya is one of those kits that has an impressive standing no matter what it's doing, it can easily be a centerpiece with enough TLC.
That being said, do your practice kit first and then do Kshatriya right, she deserves to look good.
So think the Blue destiny has a shot as an mg kit or as a Re-100?
>>15659311
P-Bandai MG with old Ground GM frame
Would you describe the grey on this kit a mix of just black and grey or is it something else?
>>15658368
Fucking CUTE. God damn I love GMs and this is already looking neat, looking forward to how this goes.
Following on from the SD 00-Raiser the other week, I finally had time to build this guy.
I was surprised by the amount of detail in this little guy, the gold stickers were actually quiteniceand I've never had an SD kit that came with detailing stickers before.
Only nag is the arms at the ball joints seem to just fall out under any slight movement.
>>15659540
Next is Full Armor Unicorn when I can find another free weekend.
>>15659540
SDs are, honestly, surprisingly fun. If you're enjoying SDs of regular kits, you'll probably love the Legend BB series. Devil Dragon Blade Zero and the Knight Gundam(s) are great choices; Unicorn Knight also looks great, but I haven't built that one myself.
>>15659445

>>15657525
I am torn. I was going to do a simple custom of the eye-zack but after fooling around with a bunch of spare parts I ended up creating a fat gundam.
>>15659613

>>15659613
any plans for the backpackyet? i like it so far
>>15659670
I have the empty armored shell of the alex backpack (Its actual backpack got used towards something else) that I'm using pla plate and some spare thrusters to turn into a new backpack.
>>15657525
not much other that almost done seamwelding. i also need to customize the arms so it can use the modern hg hands. after that, i will start painting. i also might have to readjust the handles of the weapon since those are adjusted for the older, smaller hands
>Use a Gundam marker for the first time
>Expect stellar panel lining results, everybody makes this sound so easy
>Apply and remove the excess with a cotton bud
>My face when the bleed off just leaves smudges all over my Gunpla that I can't rub off
H-help
>>15660042
you're not supposed to rub it off with a dry swab. dip it in alcohol
>>15660042
Just use a copic marker if you want ez panel lining on bare plastic.
I'd recommend an actual panel wash but it's a no go on bare plastic.
>>15660049
Fuck, not a single damn person in the videos I watched mentioned this. It looked like they were just using dry cotton buds, hell some were even using their thumbs to rub off the excess as they applied it.
>>15660054
If it makes you feel better, I had to figure that out myself. You have to be careful though, if you douse the tip in alcohol and rub, then you'll remove the panel lines you want to keep.
>>15660052
I'm guessing panel wash without a coat of paint would just weaken the plastic and make it split?
>>15660060
Do you have any specific suggestions for which sort of rubbing alcohol would be best? I'm not particularly skilled in painting so it's only going to be used for removing excess from panel liners.
>>15659613
That looks cool, where is the chest from?
>>15660054
I use dry ones as well. You don't need to use alcohol unless you're panel lining with enamel, which you shouldn't do without a topcoat anyway.
You should let the ink rest for a few minutes before wiping if you get smudges.
>>15660091
I believe that is the alex chobham armor chest.
>>15660063
Yes, enamel paint/thinner and lighter fluid both make the plastic brittle. I have no idea why there seems to be a bunch of guides/videos about enamel washes that do not mention this.
>>15660209
Weird, that's something that should absolutely be explained to newbies. I know I like to be quite vigorous with paints and such to make sure I haven't left any part untouched. So if I started using panel wash and that was never mentioned, I'd have just dumped $70 of Gunpla down the drain.
>That's how you're meant to do the piping for Zakus
MOTHERFUCKER
>>15660271
I am glad we no longer have to do manual piping for newer kits.
>>15660271
There are little ridges/bumps that keep the piping in place. It takes a considerable amount of force to push or pull them over those ridges. On one of my builds I ended up turning the side of my fingers raw because that was the only grip I could get on the bastards. Ended up using pliers to pull them and it was still an arduous process.

Anyone have the P-Bandai Tallgeese III? Is it worth the jacked up price?
>>15660605
The Tallgeese mold is pretty good aside from the waist, and the Tallgeese III has a decent amount of new parts for the mold so I would say yes. I bought Tallgeese II also though, so I really don't mind dropping extra for P Bandai. I just fucking buy it if I like it.
Does anybody know why the HGUC Unicorn rifle is like this? It is not the same peg as the hold in the hand.
>>15660605
I do, one of my first P-Bandai ever.
Worth it for me as it's my favourite Tallgeese design.
Only difference from the regular release aside clolour scheme is the head, railguns, shield+heatrod, and the inclusion of waterslides instead of stickers.
The regular MG is also great and is one of the cheaper MGs out there.
Still waiting on some deals for the P-Bandai Heavyarms Kai.
Anyone got recommendations for "fuck off" type guns in the 1/100 scale, resin? Maybe something similar to the Ground Gundam's huge gun.

Julieta's Reginlaze
Hyakuri
Hugo
Graze Custom II

I made a big mistake. I watched the gundam franchise (From origin to Turn-A) and now I feel the need for some gunpla. So i bought my first ever Gunpla (HGUC Gouf custom). Can't wait for it to get here.
Also, why are there almost no Turn-A gunpla? I know it has the most Love it/Hate it designs out there, but the lack of proper Turn-A line is disappointing.
>>15661710
There's only the MG Turn A, MG Turn X, and HGUC Turn A in terms of recent gunpla, but there are some old 1/144 and 1/100 kits from the Turn A line like the Sumo, Flat, and Kapool.
>>15661710
Only the mainline suits hold widespread appeal, so your only option for the grunt suits are the really old kits.

It's you who went apeshit over it, mr defensive. I'm not the one who needs to resort to calling people autistic.

I just started doing this about 6 months ago and never bothered to put on any stickers, thinking it was too much effort. However, I got the Atlas Gundam today, and the kit has a lot of stickers. >>15663463
Was a little surprised that in your video you said you couldn't get the decals to settle due to the rougher surface of the paint, I was just wondering if you gloss coated the suit post paint?
When I hand paint larger parts a coat goes a long way to evening out the surface for decals.
>>15662987
The stuff you build sounds so cool! Can we see it?
>>15663463
>>15663535
Also same went for panel lining, you wouldn't have had that problem with having to paint the over mistakes with a coat of gloss, lining would have travelled much better.
>>15663539
I gloss coated everything well before decals, I may have cut them a little large though. the lining was odd it would not clear from areas I wanted it to....no idea why
>>15663558
get some mark softer, can make a worlds difference to the decals, should take the wrinkles out. absolutely worth it for decals on round surfaces. for lining, grab some enamel paint and thinner and drop some in. i used testors and it worked before buying the tamiya ones.

I just use disposable vinyl gloves, they do break occasionally but they are disposable after all.

Been sorting through the ziplock bag of spare and additional parts/weapons, but I just can't place these. The three guns on the left. Two appear to be should mounted somethings, and the bottom one is a mini-gun. Halp?

It always confuses me how people get such clean bends on their plaplate. What method did you use? Heating things up with water never gives me enough stretch to make a half circle, and holding it over fire while it works is easy to mess up.
Progress on the 1/100 zaku F2000 resin conversion kit.
Uses the MG 2.0 zaku frame.
Gotta say, I'm impressed.
No bubbles in any of the resin at all.
Everything fits together well (a few loose clips but some hot water fixes that)
Lots of part separation to make painting easier.
Replaced the metal spikes with bandai HD parts.
I'll be replacing the verniers with some aftermarket ones too.

>>15665847
This was my first time really messing with curved plaplate, and I tried using a blow dryer to help ease the plastic into bending, then used large alligator clips to make sure that the curves kept their shape. It's not a perfect curve if you look up close to it, but it's passable enough for me after some sanding. I used the arm pads from a HGFC Shining Gundam as a base, and with a bit of trimming they fit onto the arm holes on the Build Burning easily. Now onto trying out a few things for the scarf.
Also thanks for

Just got a neo iwata from a hobby train place here in maple syrup land.
What other musts should I get for my setup? I intend to get an inexpensive compressor with no tank to start but in a few weeks to a month get a nicer one.
>>15666446
Model train places in maple syrup land? All I tend to see are RC/drone hobby stores.
Check the thread size on your compressor. Should usually be 1/4" NPT that you can get from Canadian Tire.
Also get a regulator and moisture trap.
Get a braided hose too, the other kinds of air hoses lose about 5 psi or more coming out of the compressor.is it one of those bigger train store chains or is it one of them small mom and pop neighborhood sort of places with autistic and/or old people milling about and tending the store?
>>15666486
Canadian Tire huh? It's run by an elderly widower, and mostly older men just kind of shuffle around. I only have gone in to get topcoats before today.
I appreciate the help, my friend works at a Timmy's next to the place and I'll be back there tomorrow. Have any other airbrushing advice? Currently I was considering buying some random brand paint there but honestly I'd prefer if I didn't have to thin or custom color at first, one skill at a time.
So what are some techniques you think would be useful in upgrading older kits to look nicer?
I'm working on a very old kit and would like to make it look reasonably nice. I know with my skill level it will not achieve greatness, but at minimum it can be a stepping stone I can be proud of.
>>15666084
I'm probably not describing it right. Set it to get the bend you want, glue it down, then apply a force to the part using the clips so that the ends are being forced onto the piece in a way that forces it to bend properly. This way the plate doesn't unbend back into a straight piece and ensures a better connection between the plate and the part.
Also trying to decide between two colorschemes, the only real issue is whether the arms should be black/red or white/red. Here's white
And here's black
>>15666640
>>15666642
I'd say black (or better yet, dark grey) is closer to Hibiki in G, but I think it would probably stick out a bit too much.
White arms would probably flow with the custom's overall color scheme better.
In the end, it's a gunpla custom based on an idea, not the idea itself, so it doesn't have to be completely accurate, IMHO.Remember all the way back in 2015 when we both planned to do Airgetlam after finishing our Gungnir Marias?
Did you ever get around finishing yours? I got a bit too busy with real life after my custom of S1 Hibiki.
>>15666664
This is the first real work I've put into my gears since I finished the Ichaival Heavyarms asides from snapfitting the base-kits. AXZ starting up kindled the fires for it so I'm going back into this one and possibly DessScythe. Still need to grab a 00 Qant for Ame no Habakiri, although I might try bashing it with Shia Qant, not sure yet.
I never figured out a good kit for Airgetlam but I bought that Koto MSG beast sword just to see what it'd be like and it's way too big for any HG, but it does give a good idea for how to make something like that.

It sounds like upgrading is actually away from you right now, but a clean build that looks nice from an ancient kit? That's doable at your presumed skill level.
First, sharpen, shape, and cut. Get your Vfin/antennae/general pointy bits into a more clean and defined shape. This step is skipped too often but can remove a lot of the baggage old kits have when it comes to looking like the wider end of a midget with downs. A clean silhouette is a happy one.
Second, seam weld. Old kits are notorious for their shitty seams and their lackluster parts fit. Fix this and get it together solidly so that you don't have to worry about the seams.
Third, sand and primer. Clean up all the residue from the seam closing process, sand smooth and then primer down. At this point your build should be looking pretty solid, a definite improvement in anyone's eyes from a snapbuilt old kit, with clean edges, no visible seams, and a well defined silhouette.
Fourth, paint. Self explanatory, and you don't need to go too far out of your way, even just a clean paint job is enough, although preshades and highlights can do wonders.
Lastly, detailing, decaling, and topcoating. Panel lines, washes, and any assortment of waterslides to suit your fancy. Start with your gloss coat to protect your paint, put in your work with the lining and decals, and then seal it with a final protective flat coat.
That's it, that's all that is standing between an old kit and a piece deserving of all its space on the shelf.
