I've never understood the hate for Hirai's designs outside of people wanting to be on the "in crowd" and somehow fit in on /m/.
They're not bad artistically and in terms of "same face" they're no worse than any other character designer like Mikimoto or Kitazume.
I probably think this because I watched a few of his shows and actually formed my own opinion before going on forums to talk about them, had I not done so I'd probably be thinking the same as the hivemind.

In Infinite Ryvius his faces were still tolerable, but he's just been getting worse and worse as time passed. In MJ it almost looks like the faces are melting.

While his style for this show changed a lot all he's really done is simplified them to look more "cartoony" to match the tone of the show.

The worst he got was in SEED, and even there it was only with the few main bishounen and female characters.
Side characters and adults all looked fine.

/m/'s favorite character designer is Urushihara, and nobody denies that his characters have severe sameface syndrome.

The big difference is that his one face alone is far better than any face Hirai has ever shat out.

I don't like noseless designs but to crucify Hirai alone for it is pretty hypocritical.
It's not even a permanent facet of his work, his Fafner stuff still has more detail.
MJP deliberately looks simplified.

In fact he's barely mentioned since he's barely put out any work aside from bublegum crisis, cybernator and Langrisser.
