Kurosawa supposedly was interested in making a Godzilla film. But, so the story goes, Toho was afraid of what the budget for such an endeavor might be and nipped it in the bud.

Vs. the Smog Monster. Liked the media coverage presented throughout the movie, and that Hedorah (my favorite Godzilla kaiju design) did a good job paralleling a different example of humanity's mistakes. While Godzilla represents the dangers of nuclear tampering, Hedorah representing pollution as a whole.
That and the psychedelic stuff was fun. I find a lot of the Godzilla movies run a bit long and become a bit droning, but that movie kept me fairly entertained all the way through.
>>
>>15646180
It already looks like it's meandering away from what makes Godzilla what it is, and seems like it's turned him into a generic alien threat for the sake of making it larger scale. I think Gen has like a 50/50 track record, so It could go ether way in terms of execution.

Gargantia was good and the first episode of Aldnoah Zero was decent enough. Blame appears to have been received well. All of these seem like positive signs.

I'm assuming that Godzilla will be the initial threat, however, he'll transition into something of an anti-hero after a greater evil is revealed.

I don't have one top favorite but I do have favorites in each era.

Showa - Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster

Heisei - tied between Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

Millennium - Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack

American films - 2014 hands down. Could user a bit more editing and better characters but it was much more true to Godzilla than 98.

Banno's Godzilla vs Hedorah is a pretty unconventional adventure, at least by this series and mainstream film standards, for about 2/3 of its running time. Although its third act is a little less ambitious, it concludes on a satisfactory note. Pretty similar to Shin Godzilla actually.

Shout out to Ken. One of the better child protagonists in the entire genre. But Gamera the Brave has the best child characters and, in general, doesn't get enough love. I think it's better than Advent of Legion.

Shin Godzilla's gradual growth/change of shape reminded me of Hedorah a lot.
When they started inspecting the individual cells of Shin, it reminded me of when they examined the little petri dish with part of Hedorah in it.
No idea if any of that was deliberate.

Anno and the other directors faced serious budget and technological limitations. Remember that Honda had bigger plans for Destroy All Monsters? Urobuchi is working in a medium where the possibilities are endless. He's just using the freedom anime will allow him. Not saying this is for the best, just explaining where he's likely coming from. Still I'd prefer a Satoshi Kon (RIP), Miyazaki, or a Kazunori Itō working on this. Maybe even Makoto Shinkai or Kojima.

>Do you know something the rest of us don't?

Toho thought of everything. If this doesn't work, a Godzilla anime WILL never work. I think they're being very careful because of how taboo making Godzilla into anime is.

>inb4 what about Godzilla land

Here's my prediction that will 100% happen:

The trilogy is going to be pretty good, but will rub a lot of people the wrong way. It's trying to be both a human drama and a monster film and will actually succeed.
Because it's going to be the polar opposite of Shin, that in itself means a lot of people won't accept it, not because it's good or bad, but because it's not their cup of tea. Which is fine.
>>
>>15653874
>If this doesn't work, a Godzilla anime WILL never work
That's an even bolder claim. I think traditional animation would have garnered a stronger reception. Not to mention age better. And as a few anons have said above, the story sounds a bit convoluted.

What would the poplar opposite of Shin Godzilla be? It rustled some jimmies. Remember #notmygodzilla?
>>
>>15654119
>Remember #notmygodzilla?
no because I don't go by faggot sites
>>
>>15654119
3DCG is another obstacle it has for it, before it can get accepted and will no doubt decrease the amount of potential viewers.
I think themes and story are more important, if they failed at making a 3D anime, they'll surely fail at making a 2D anime.

It's polar opposite in terms of approach to a Godzilla story even though they're featuring a similar depiction of Godzilla.
Shin was made with the intent to serve as the base and foundation, it remade Godzilla with today's nip sensibilities.
Anime Godzilla is trying to distill the history of the franchise in 3 movies while still retaining the original depiction of Godzila from 54 and now Shin.

Shin is elegant and simple while Anime Godzilla will feel bloated and over the top.

The original is a classic for a reason, it really is the best. It's been nearly a year since I've seen it, but I might put Shin at 2nd, with 1964 Mothra Vs and GMK tied for 3rd. As much as I grew up watching Godzilla as the defender of earth, I do feel the best movies for whatever reason are the ones where he's the villain

This sexy list. What would you consider to be the best of the hero films? I say Hedorah, Monster Zero, and Ghidorah. Perhaps MechaGodzilla 74 as well.
>>
>>15665527
Out of the hero films? I'd probably have VS Destroyah 1st, Terror of Mechagodzilla 2nd, with Ghidorah the 3-Headed Monster 3rd. Was going to put DAM 3rd for the sheer amount of monsters, but Ghidorah just edges it out. Special mention goes to VS Gigan as a personal favorite despite knowing it's really mediocre at best, but it's got all 4 of my favorite monsters. I must have rented that movie a dozen times as a kid.

In general though, I feel the Heisei Gamera trilogy did the hero thing better.

Tough to say. Destroyah's case, I just felt it was the right way to end the Heisei series, and the ending gets me every time. ToM is a bit harder to pin down, but there's something about it I feel works a little better than MechaG '74, although it may be because I'm 90% sure it was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw, so there may be some rosy retrospection there. Also, both ToM and Destroyah saw Ifukube at the top of his game, I can say without hesitation I think ToM has a better score than GvMG. DoM is a bit harder to justify, it's really nothing special other than being a smorgasbord of Toho monsters, particularly the battle at the end.

Is there an explanation given in the movie to what Shin Godzilla actually is?

I mean, all the other movies seem to use, or at least reference the fact that Godzilla is supposed to me an irradiated dinosaur or dinosaur-like creature.

But wtf is shingoji? Is he some kind of giant colony of bacteria or something? Or do they generally keep it vague throughout the film

I've watched shin, but I don't recall if they focused on his origin, much. All the dialogue was going by so fast

I personally found the whole film boring as fuck, the entire human plot was too uninteresting and drawn-out, and all the stuff about the space mind control and the assassins just drew away way too much focus from the more interesting monster plot. And the battle at the end was nothing spectacular, somehow too goofy and unimaginative at the same time. Like a shitty spy thriller and a shitty kaiju movie slapped into one.
The only thing I appreciate about the movie is its historical significance and the labor that went into creating the monster effects.

Huh? I enjoyed the relationship between Shindo and the princess. Malness was an effective villain. Sure the characters don't leave as great of an impression as those of Mothra vs Godzilla or Monster Zero, though I definitely find them likable and the film maintains an acceptable balance between that and the monsters. Godzilla rushing to Mothra's defense and getting shoved aside onto the bridge by Ghidorahpushing is one of my favorite moments of the genre. There's also Rodan doing a 180° before slamming into Ghidorah and the volleyball match between the former and Godzilla. It makes the top ten best list of the series.

Only watched three of the Toho movies, and one of them was when I was really young (and even THEN it was Mothra vs. Godzilla), but Original Godzilla is probably my favorite. It's aged REALLY well, and the black and white gives it a scary, darker atmosphere. A close second would be Shin Godzilla, as while I liked how the film was done and the action scenes were great the political scenes were rather slow and jarring at times, although I DID like the realistic approach in general.

>What is there to appreciate about this one?
Not that anon, but I liked the island setting, the initial conflict between the humans, the marionette puppetry and seeing Godzilla as a calmly sleeping lummox and then develop as a father was at the very least interesting. The ending's pretty heartwarming.
But maybe I'm too forgiving, since this was the first Japanese Godzilla movie that I saw parts from, so I had this curiosity in me for a long time before I watched the entire thing. I still think the film is mediocre overall. Minilla's antics bring it down and the human story just stops being interesting in the second half.

No, not really. Most of the films generally take place in the year they were filmed, with a few of the older ones taking place in the future. So they went up into space for what passes for x number of years with just whatever resources they carried with them. Now returning to Earth, the whole planet is own by monsters. I don't think most critics or general audience members cared whether it was respectful to the source material. They simply wanted a good time at the movies. Similar to what they got with Independence Day. However, given its inability to meet even heavily revised expectations and the shelves of merchandise that went unsold, I'm left convinced that people rejected the film itself.

Just because you "In before" doesn't make it automatically not true, many of the criticisms that befall Godzilla 2014 can apply just as easily to several of the japanese movies.
That being said, I too am scratching my head as to why one would consider 2014 their favorite. I don't think it's a bad godzilla film by any means, I place it squarely on the good half of the movies and a much better attempt than '98, but outside of the fatality and a few really nice shots I think it felt most like a Heisei movie. Not terrible, but not one of the best. Which is sad, because the potential was there, it could have been much better if they focused more on Joe Brody than his son, and I think they over used the "cut-away-as-a-fight-starts" cocktease too many times. I can forgive it being done once or even twice to save the good stuff for the final battle, but they pulled that shit like 4-5 times.

This is the problem I have with the "it's the same" line of reasoning

> Screen time for Godzilla
Godzilla 2014 is thirty minutes longer (in some cases forty minutes) than the vast majority of Godzilla movies. Yet it falls towards the bottom of the list on how much it features the title character. He has 10 minutes of screen time in a two hour movie. Much of which goes towards "cinematic foreplay", as Edwards calls it. Both Godzilla Final Wars and Shin Godzilla are approximately the same running time as the film in question, however, Godzilla gets 15 minutes and 18 minutes respectively. So the screen time complaint is indeed a valid issue. Take thirty minutes of dead weight and throw it into your favorite film. It'll change your opinion concerning it quite dramatically.

Godzilla is also fairly easy to remove from the story without the need for many serious alterations. He could not show up at all until the third act and virtually nothing would be different. No presence when not onscreen and he's hardly onscreen.

> Characters
Early in the movie everyone except the protagonist is either killed or reduced to window dressing. Unfortunately, Ford Brody has no charisma whatsoever and no one interesting to interact with. Due to the decision to be a human drama first and foremost, nearly all of the action is pushed to the third act and even then its frequently interrupted by the characters.

The Japanese films have ensemble casts (we get to see different personalities bounce off one another) and better balance the screen time/focus between humans and monsters. And there isn't any teasing to worry about when it's time to let the monsters loose. Plus the movies are typically half an hour shorter. These are important differences to take into consideration.
>>
>>15673255
>I think most people agree it would be a fine monster flick
>I'm left convinced that people rejected the film itself.
I don't think it's as clear cut as either. It wasn't the fuckhuge mega hit the execs were hoping for, its tie-in merchandising empire crumbled and a sequel was out of question. But the movie itself did passable, if unremarkable, business overall, and from what I gather, it was way better received internationally and the home video release did pretty well too. So there clearly was an audience for it, whether the creators and the Godzilla fanbase realize it or not.

Godzilla (1998) cost $130 million to produce and only made $379 million worldwide. Compare its gross to the films it was anticipated to match or surpass.

Titanic: $1.84 billion
Independence Day: $817.4 million
Jurassic Park: $900 million
Phantom Menace: $924.3 million

Critics ripped it to shreds. Attacking it from every direction. It was nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards (worst remake/reimagining, worst director, worst screenplay, worst picture, worst supporting actress) and won two.

Of course it didn't outright flop. Someone watched it. The hype was huge. But for a film with as much goodwill (ID4 was that popular) behind it as this and one of the most extensive marketing campaigns ever (Taco Bell anyone?), there was more than "it didn't respect Godzilla" at work. Has any blockbuster failed this horribly to live up to expectations?

Yes, it's what I'm saying. It was unarguably a disappointment at the end of the day, but it still had some kind of base of its own, so it wasn't as universally derided as some say. Not talking about this thread, just in general. It seems that sometimes the bare notion that there were viewers who liked it causes Godzilla fans to go into full denial mode.
Like I mentioned, it apparently had decent video sales/rentals, it was very successful in some foreign territories (3rd highest grossing movie of the year in total numbers, as opposed to the US where it landed in 9th place I believe, and there have been a few fans who confirmed that people in their countries overwhelmingly liked it), and the director also said it was his most popular film with kids.
Just to reiterate, I'm not arguing it was a shitty fucking mess of a film and a failed endeavor, but it wasn't really a complete failure that everyone rejected either. But funnily enough, I've also seen people claim that it was some big, beloved success that only the critics didn't like, which is also false.

Thematically it's far divorced from Shin Godzilla which actually ended up being rooted firmly in the themes of the original film, with some modern political commentary thrown in. This new series all just sounds like absurdist power fantasy.

Godzilla '14 left me so disappointed I haven't seen Skull Island and I'm not excited about any of the other Legendary entries either.

> Captures the tone of the early Showa films
Eh. Not really. G2000, GMK, and Shin are much better examples of that.
>>
>>15687564
It's still somber and less light-hearted than other Godzilla films. Should say it's more like Heisei if anything though.
>>
>>15687539
>It'd be stellar if Legendary could get Gamera somehow, or even Ultraman
The chance of Ultraman happening is so low that it's painful. American audiences would probably laugh at Ultraman or Jet Jaguar unless they had some heavy redesigns or had an extreme tonal shift.

This. Isn't there still a major copyright dispute between Tsuburaya Productions and Chaiyo Productions?

>>15687570
Return of Godzilla would be the most appropriate comparison in terms of tone. Except RoG has a far superior score that compliments the movie. Besides Vs Biollante and Vs Destoroyah, the other Heisei films are honestly pretty light. All of them offer copious amounts of Godzilla. Between 15-20 minutes each.

What? GMK is like the ultimate outlier when it comes to theme and Godzilla's behavior. He's not a force of nature anymore, but an evil demon.

The film itself captures the tone. It feels like a modern Honda film. Especially with the characters (reporters and military). Slightly exaggerating Godzilla's maliciousness doesn't change that. In the original film Godzilla isn't all that sympathetic either and he directly targets fleeing civilians with his breath on multiple occasions.

So what did people here think of Skull Island, anyway? I went in expecting to hate it but it was actually pretty fun and I liked all the goofy shit. And there was no horribly labored ape-human romance garbage to slow it down.
>>
>>15688967

I thought it was going to be a Wes Anderson kaiju movie from the intro(which I wouldn't have minded) then the tone shifted. I enjoyed it a lot. Kong's fights were great and the other creature designs were awesome. Characters were decent enough without being too obnoxious as well.

I want to see it again.

didn't Godzilla Heritage or whatever get shut down for being a fan film using "godzilla" in its title?
I also only saw the video title up to "fan" so I was kinda disappointed it was a fan film and not a fan game styled similar to Hulk Ultimate Destruction

It got shut down because it had multiple Kickstarters to fund and it had high production values. Toho is letting them finish it, under the condition that it remove Godzilla from the title and stay under 40 minutes. Also, only letting the people who funded on Kickstarter get access to it.
>>

Shin.
Because the final form and the movie itself is more faithful to the original while looking like an straight upgrade.
