iirc this is a hilarious case of translation error. The chinese word "chi" is the equivalent of "ki" in japanese, but in japanese, "chi" meant "fart" (lol wind of life). So when japanese scholars centuries ago read scrolls about chinese warriors with chi powers, they read it as "fart powers".
At least that's how it was explained to me by a fellow weeb way back int he 90's before I had google. Never actually bothered to verify it.
