I was wanting to believe that these pages were just selected for action with some pages missing, but with these dialogue bubbles connecting, I'm starting to believe this is a straight shot glimpse of what the first six pages of issue #1 are supposed to look like. Yup, start to finish, not even Roy can escape this attempt at being edgy and grimdark. Not only are the designs pretty awful and silly, the dialogue is just as condescending as if Carl Macek wrote it. Will these guys get cancer if they wrote one piece of real dialogue and make their characters act like normal people?

When it comes to comics, HG can do whatever they want with Macross since comic books are legally counted as merchandise and not direct derivative works.

The reason why they are pushing for for new designs and such for this comic is because they want to make retelling as different as they can to give people some form of new content. That, and they're also billing this whole thing as "Macek's true vision" so the more changes the better, I guess?

It may also be an attempt to somewhat distance themselves from Macross as much as possible so that they can prep their deluded fanbase in accepting the inevitable outcome that they wont be able to use Macross designs and concepts in the proposed movie they want to make (which is bounded by legal obligations to the point that they openly admitted that Sony can't release it in Japan).

In the Jack Mckinney novels, Roy and some ego-driven douchebag named Edwards are two ace pilots that are chosen to represent their respective military sides as last-minute diplomats to assist the expedition to explore the alien spacecraft.

I'm not sure what exactly is going on with this version since Roy and Hayes are jumping right into the action after the crash and taking names like they already own the place. No government cooperation needed, apparently.

And one of the alien villains are even referred to as 'Robotech Masters'; simply because they believe they know how to control the wonder technology better than anyone else. It also doesn't help that they're written to be this all powerful omnipotent lot who share their consciousness in groups of three, but in the actual show they're actually really fucking stupid. Every episode has them making these amazing mistakes and then brushing them off like nothing happens, like they have everything under control, and it always bites them in the ass later on.

First they send the one perfect clone of the man that can give them more of the intergalactic gasoline they've spent 15 years searching for behind enemy lines as a spy. They try to wrangle up the main characters by luring them into their mother ship only to be outwitted with them escaping and shooting up the place before they leave. They get the secret to their shields figured out, making their entire fleet vulnerable, and they simply brush it off as 'no concern' (Spoiler alert: it helps lead to their downfall). Watching the entire "Masters Saga" with them is something you have to see to believe; they have no idea what they're doing!

It's funny. I watched Robotech religiously when it aired in my country, even the reruns, but I can't remember any of those things. Hell, I barely remember anything about Masters outside of the space helicopters, the flowers and that Zor/Xor guy having a thing for Diana.

If the boobs get any bigger or the uniforms get any tighter, one get pull the rug out from under Harmony Gold and make a full-on porn parody of Robotech and it could possibly get more traction than anything the company has gotten off of the ground. The Waltrips sorta did it with their Sentinels comic series in the 90s, especially with those awkward swimsuit issues of the characters.

I didn't even grow up with it and tried to watch the whole thing with an open mind some three years ago. As I'm watching all of this unfold I always questioned to myself "Why the fuck does anyone not notice this?!" because with all the praise I see for Robotech online in places like IMDb, they never once talk about the folly of the Robotech Masters or any of the glaring plotholes.

For instance, the concept of protoculture is completely inconsistent because its supposed to be this wonder fuel that lasts a long time. During the "Macross Saga", humans had no idea that the one mechanism that could produce more protoculture indefinitely was obliterated when the SDF-1 was destroyed, and thus (as a fan theory puts it, because this is NEVER explained) they had to siphon other protoculture from the surviving Zentradi fleet after the war and the excuse is that they've been living off of this energy all the way through the "Masters Saga".....yet in "New Generation", protoculture barely even last a couple of days as characters are constantly trying to replenish their supplies and the whole series only spans an entire year!

It's really strange because protoculture is this all-important energy source that everyone is fighting over, yet at the same time, everyone is afraid to talk about it.There's never any detail or specifics of what it can and cannot do because each new writer that rights a Robotech story (comics, books, etc) pulls something else completely out of their ass that just adds to the ever growing list: Can be used to clone life, makes people insane, gives people special abilities, helps people see the future, gives people insight for plot reasons, and even sometimes causing cancer. I shit you not!
