I think the thing is 0079 has much greater cultural presence in Japan due to how massive it was in the early 80s. It remains the only Gundam (not SD) that has had runs with over 10% of the viewing audience, and it did this for every one of it's reruns until Zeta. Not everyone has watched it but they can recognize stuff from it. Zeta doesn't have as much sway in that regard but still remains popular with Gundam fans. SEED is their best bet.
