What's there to discuss? The whole show was very straight forward.

Best mecha, bests weapons. I want to see Big O punch more things out of existence. I want to see a prequel of the armies of Mega Deuce.
>>
I don't get why people compare it to Batman.

Butler aside there are very little actual similarities and more inspiration is taking from old sci fi serial and Asimov

>>15638991
Not everybody who watches animes actually read or care about stuff written before the 80's or even 90's. It's much easier to see the comparison to the 90's Batman animated series, to which it almost certainly draws a lot of aesthetic inspiration.

The fuck happened to that US bluray release? They seriously expect people to pay $80 for an upscale that removed the original opening.
>>
>>15638951
Because Sunrise was literally one of the studios that animated the 90s Batman cartoon and there's some clear influence from when they worked on that show carried on over to Big O.
>>
>>15638470
Season 2 was a mistake, and it's all because of dumb Americans.
>>
>>15639019
It otherwise would have just been more of the same of season 1. The original director stated as much in an interview, he was fine not giving it an ending at all, just maintaining the monster of the week format.
>>
>>15639019
No it was the mistake of the director for seriously thinking he could create an interesting mystery and never expect people to demand an ending. Guy should've learned after Twin Peaks that never ends well.
>>
>>15639027
Yup. It should have remained monster of the week. This was its greatest strength.

>>15639030
Murricans pushed him in that direction.
>>
>>15639032
If it weren't us it'd be someone else. You can't keep a good mystery going forever without studio interference.

>They seriously expect people to pay $80 for an upscale

Considering the JP release (which is also an upscale) was 36,000jpy (or $235), it's a better deal. Although the US release only has 4 discs, while the JP one uses 5... so I suspect more compression.

Of course the JP release also had a nice box and better overall artwork.

I have watched the series multiple times and still don't understand what the problem is people have with S2

>>15639007
Could have just as easily got its aesthetics from Giant Robo or Metropolis
>>
>>15638951
Hasn't Konaka outright pointed to Batman TAS as an inspiration behind the show?
>>
>>15639070
Yeah but most bluray releases of anime in the US go for half of what Big O does unless it's something that just recently aired or is incredibly long.
>>
>>15639030
Why can't people just enjoy the mystery and not ruin it with stupid questions?
>>
>>15639353
I don't know but if you ever plan on making a show that has a mystery of no intention with it being resolved at least for the love of gosh have an ending figured out beforehand as a contingency plan if the network decides to force you to reveal it because I guarantee they will after a season or two.
>>
>>15639013
It seems to be $50 on Amazon on Rightstuf, which is pretty standard for a new 26 episode release.
>>
>>15639378
Must have been some sort of pricing error I guess. Few days ago it was listed at $79.99
>>
>>15638470
I still don't fully understand the ending, was it all a simulation/hologram?
>>
>>15639490
It was a "tv show". The whole plot of season 2 including Roger's speech at the end is a commentary on the renewal of popular shows and the relationship between the creators, the audience, and tbe studio.

Wasn't there an alternate ending that branched out into what they had planned for the 3rd season, but AS cut back and that reuse of the 1st episode was used in place (with somewhat off-model Angel and Dorothy on the street watching Roger drive by)?
>>
>>15638470
In the second season there are more characters introduced that speak other languages but in the first season it's regarded that they don't exist
What's with the contradictions?
>>15638483
Just watched that episode
>>
>>15639490
The characters became self aware they were in a TV show and convinced the network to put it in syndication rather than remove it entirely.
>>
>>15638470

whiney westerners got their season 2 which sucked
>>
>>15639490
The second season took what the first season always implied about its construction (the mystery of Paradigm City and things like the backstory of the Bigs being scaffolding for Roger's adventures and thematic garnishing instead of the centerpiece) and made it an explicit meta-story with the characters being presented in a self-aware TV show. Why is Paradigm City the way it is? Why does Roger know about Big O and why is he able to control it so well? It's because that's the story.

It's somewhat clever, and a little more gracefully done than one might expect, but I've always felt it was a shame that the show traded its real strengths for hammering that home.

Regarding the upscaled blu-ray... it's certainly not what the show deserves, but comparing it to the DVDs, it does look a bit better in some aspects (colors are better, some details more noticeable).

Of course a proper remaster would look a thousand times better.... but we're never going to get that. :(

And then that all goes out the window if you consider SRW Z's storyline for The Big O.

Was Big O cell animated or was it digital? Because if it's the latter, there's literally nothing you can do with early digital anime.
>>
>>15646414
The first season was cel, the second was digital.
>>
>>15645144
SRW Z series plays the setting straight but adds in the dimensional fuckery that is more or less the recurring theme of that series. IIRC Paradigm isn't a T.V. show, but the city itself is still a simulation intended as a way of preventing further dimensional fuckeries and disasters by erasing the memories of those inside of it and causing them to stagnate. Paradigm is also lousy with 'Dimensional Power' which is an energy source that can more or less be manipulated for whatever you want.

Pretty good. Just like the 1st season, details and colors are better. I've only grabbed screens from episode 15 (Negotiation with the Dead), but I think they're good examples. Of course some more work on it since it was digitally done unlike the cel work for the 1st season, could've improved some of the softness.... but I digress.

In doing these, I've noticed the BD contains more of the overall image (DVD appears cropped on both sides, strange...), so that's another plus.

(Wish that site had a multi-upload option...)

Also, anyone here a former member of the Paradigm City Forums?

I wish they hadn't shut it down. I mean I think every theory about the series was discussed to death, but it was a nice comfortable "home" on the web.
