Well, at least I hadn't seen it before, no idea if it's common knowledge. Basically it's a short epilogue sequence for the flash anime that takes place after the final episode.

I don't know when it aired. As far as I know, there's not even a full release of the flash anime on DVD/Blu-Ray.

The flash anime generally aired as a lead in to two Keroro episodes on Animax. However, sometimes they aired various episodes of the flash anime by themselves, covering a full block with them, and there were some special airings with the entire flash show's run at once.

I didn't catch them though, since finding Animax streams was annoying back then and I didn't expect any new content, but I guess it's possible that segment came from one of those airings.

So, what is Keroro like now? Any new interesting hijinks? I stopped watching a very long time ago after episode 135 or so, after the first team vs team arc. Kururu saving the day was definitely the highlight of that arc, but after it feels lie tired jokes and stale characterization.

As far as the anime went, starting from the 2nd year, it's mostly anime original stories, rather than manga adaptations. There are still some, but even the 2nd year only had 14 episodes with at least one story based on the manga and the number just drops from there.

Anyway, they also change directors in the beginning of the 3rd year. The new director takes a while to really get a handle on the humor. He improves starting from the 4th year though, both with humorous stories and serious ones. The quality is still inconsistent, but there's some really enjoyable stuff, like an episode where Mois gets Kururu's personality and starts torturing the platoon. Also, thanks to a manga story, Momoka's parents are basically revealed to be Ryu and Chun-li when they were younger, which leads to some hilariously over the top stuff in some anime original stories too. There are also some episodes with actually cool robot battles, stuff like Dororo's backstory, and a bunch of neat one shots.

There isn't a lot of development for the main cast though. They add a running joke about Kururu teasing Giroro about liking him. Momoka after a while (mostly) stops with expensive operations to get Fuyuki, although it still happens a couple of times (in the episodes of a writer that obviously shipped Fuyuki with Alisa, the monster girl that's introduced around the point where you stopped watching).

The anime ended with the 7th year though, and afterwards it has mostly been the manga. There were two seasons of flash shorts that adapted some early stories again and several later ones from after the original anime ended, but it skips a lot of stuff due to its short length.

There's not even a BD release. Only a DVD one with half (?) of the show and some making-of footage iirc, and it was a package deal with volume 25 of the manga ("Volume 25.5").

As an aside, they had a copy in the NYC Kinokuniya which I saw on yet another random visit. Should have grabbed it then, but oh well.

It makes that one kind of boring though, exactly because it's almost a perfect match as far as looks go.

Anyway, I got a raw of volume 28 of the manga, but there are no extra chapters. It does do some odd things with the chapter arrangement though, like mixing multiple chapters of the Nazca lines together into a single one (so some pages are edited to flow without the cliffhanger lines), with the now unused covers shown in extra pages after the main story. It skips the new years' story too, going up to chapter 258, already the beginning of the Giroro vs Aku Aku battle.

I guess this is why Mine wanted to avoid shorter chapters, since there's very little material for a new volume at this point.

Nah, he started heavily promoting it on twitter as soon as the game was out and not doing well - although back then the point was to attempt to save the franchise. The Keroro crossover was the biggest increase of users they got back then, but then they couldn't follow it up with anything else (the GiTS one was a flop).

And he was defending the anime on twitter during the first two episode airings, which got tons of negative comments even in Japan.

Nah, that's not official art. Mine only draws adult Natsumi with breasts that big. 13-14 years old Natsumi's aren't that large.

Although that might be intended to be adult Natsumi, considering her hair style, and it's just due to the artist's style that she looks too young.

Hah @ this episode's ironic twist. Though, the Mk Is weren't very useful compared to the Mk IIs/God Keron, and not like the dream sequence, where the Kerobot was just replaced by completely different ones. Though the lesson itself is pretty sound and Keroro was a jackass for having that thought.

I never thought about this before, but Orara's design is clearly meant to be a Getter reference, right?

The anime staff ended up using the design for a Goku parody, but the hat, sideburn and emblem make a lot more sense if it was actually designed to be a Getter reference.

Funny thing is that in the last season it's the MkII that pretty much vanishes while the original Keroro Robo (by itself) makes a couple of cameos. The Great Keron appears once for the mother's day episode, but after that it's pretty much only the original Keroro Robo that appears. Although the Giroro MkII also makes a brief appearance.

I don't think there was anything specific for the Keronians, but there was that huge Japanese reference list.

It seemed to focus more on quotes taken from other works, rather than visual references though, but there were some annotations about visual references too.

They're smaller than in the beginning of the manga, but that happened years ago. I think the only recent change is giving them bigger iris, rather than the thin 90s style one that Mine used for a long time.

The first two episodes aren't really representative of the show's format (and first has several animation errors that aren't common afterwards, although the production values continue cheap), so you should watch at least up to episode 3.

It's a light adventure anime taking place in a surprising background, although that background never really becomes the focus of the show. The first episode might suggest some action/fighting focus too, but that's a wrong impression.

Don't know if it's Mine/Mine derivative work bias at hand here, or just the great way all of the show's elements just clicked and came together (the adventure, the endearing characters/nicely done character growth, humor, the subtle or unsubtle hints/details about the setting and world it takes place in, etc etc... especially by the final episodes) but yeah, it's great, and deserving of it's popularity. and it's also the first seasonal in my 6 years of following animu like that I've rewatched so soon after it ended.

Even episodes 1 and 2 are interesting on rewatches more than the first time around.

It really annoyed me how the last episode she appeared in the anime didn't reference her crush on Fuyuki at all.

It was written by Shimoyama Kento, who started writing Alisa episodes during the 6th season. The issue is that at the same time he pretty much seemed to want to sabotage Momoka. By the time of the final season, every other writer had plots focused on Momoka attempting to be a normal girl or much more "normal" stuff, like going with Fuyuki after an UMA (while latched on his arm) or getting him to go with her to a Planetarium, while in his stories that focused on Momoka she still was doing expensive plans and not really even approaching Fuyuki physically.

Then he writes this episode with the Newspaper club and completely ignores Chiruyo's crush on Fuyuki, even showing no reaction when he asks the newspaper club to interview Omiyo.

Well, technically one year had officially passed by the time New Keroro debuted, so it's not a -complete- time freeze.

I'd guess one of the issues is that Shounen Ace is filled with light novel adaptations, so making the human cast members high school age would remove some of Keroro's uniqueness compared to the other series running there.

Nope, I don't think they did. There were some licensed smaller Keroro earphones, but rather than using Kururu's design there were themed colors and emblems for each platoon member, including an yellow/orange one for Kururu. I guess they considered Kururu's too bland? It is fairly normal looking, after all.

Technically the iconic laugh was basically made up by Takehito Koyasu (note how it's very different in the early episodes compared to the later ones). So, it's not that surprising that a production without any involvement of the original anime staff ended up going in a different direction. (Mine Yoshizaki was there, but the Kemono Friends crossover was one of the rare Keroro products that didn't use the anime license at all, so no Sunrise involvement).

They were trying to draw a line between making them resemble their original selves and making them cute girls. In-universe, they're the Keroro platoon themselves but changed by Sandstar, the plot device from Kemono Friends that turns animals into human-like girls - and the change is supposed to be mental too, not only physical.

So, for example, you get Keroro being mostly the same, but to make it clear that she sees herself as a girl she boasts about her domestic skills and about wanting to be an exemplary female soldier. Giroro and Dororo even change their usual speech ticks (like Dororo going with Watakushi rather than Sessha).

I guess with Kururu they thought giving her a cutesy voice style makes up for her still using masculine pronouns and general personality. That's also probably why she got big round eyes rather than scowling or smug eyes, or just opaque glasses covering them. Looking back though, I guess she would have worked better speaking in a more feminine style but with a lower tone and more smug look.

Yeah, I don't think we ever got an account of how they met, only just them and Dororo as kids together. Also, it's interesting how Earth's importance to Keron differs now compared to the original anime, where it seemed to be treated as a normal planet to be conquered at best and backwater at worst, to a mission of utmost importance in the present manga. Then again, maybe that's why there's things like a longer history of Keronians on Earth in the manga and anime, why those shadowy Keron Army figures showed up at times in the earlier manga, and why New Keroro was sent to the Keroro Platoon.

Just based on that, it's clear that Earth must be important somehow, but this is the first time it's directly acknowledged.

I never noticed it before, but one of the anime's worst recurring jokes was entirely created by the anime's 2nd season staff (556's colored boxes) basically out of nowhere.

He's still mostly an over the top toku joke even through the episodes in the 40s, with colored boxes only coming up once, but then when he receives his reintroduction in the 2nd season, the narrator outright describes him as a man who loves colored boxes... and somehow that becomes a huge focus of his character until some point of the 6th season. I really want to know why they came up with that. I generally like 556's stupidity, but only when they weren't pushing those pointless boxes.

Do you mean when the movie aired? March 1, 2008, so the same day as episode 201. As far as viewing order goes though, I see each movie taking place after the current season, before the next one, so movie 3 would be between 4th and 5th seasons, episodes 205 and 206. This is most noticeable due to the new designs for the humans from movie 1 and movie 3 making it to the tv show right when the new season started (although in Movie 1's case they only appear in season 3's opening, not the show itself, but the movie 3 designs are actually used in the main show as soon as the 5th season begins).

Hadn't noticed it before, but looking at these designs, it seems like the colors given to the armageddon girls (who appeared in the Maya end of the world episode from the last season) were colored by the anime staff disregarding Mine's shading here. You can see that the first one, Hopi, named after a native America tribe and based on a legend from them, actually was meant to have darker skin too, like Maya's real form. There are some lines for shading around her skin that are missing from the others. Meanwhile, Luz (the twin tailed one) actually seems like she was intended to have dark hair. I guess they didn't put any thought in this since these designs just made a quick cameo at the end of the episode anyway.

The mountain doesn't look exactly like the one in pic related (no snow top), but that would beg the question of "what else would that mountain be?". Since this whole saga is about dimensional travel, maybe that could be just a subtle change? Or that this is somehow in the past, or another version of Japari Park, given, yeah, Mirai's right there.

I certainly hope it is. Entire chapters' worth of the Keroro Friends + Fuyuki's adventures and interactions in the park would be great to have so soon while KF is still hot (and in the middle of a re-airing).

Almost full scan of the extra page. No 4th wall breaks and it seems like Keroro might have amnesia unlike in the original game crossover.

In the lower panels, Mirai says they'll take her to the center to investigate what kind of frog she is, and Keroro just replies with a "Thank you very much! (De Arimasu!)".

Hm... if we do get a full story following this set up later, I hope Mine won't go with a premise where they only recover their memories by going back to normal. They'll miss a lot of chances for interaction if they only have their basic personalities, rather than their memories.

Thinking about it, amnesia could be used to transition more easily into recasting.

I remember some people on twitter complaining about Friends Keroro and Tamama having different voices in spite of having female VAs from the start, but maybe initially having amnesia + Serval calling her "Kaeru-chan" could make people accept a VA change more easily. This is relevant if they want to make content involving them without being tied to Sunrise.

I was actually wondering about the question of possible adaptation/media use outside of Mine's own illustrations/manga like if, say, Keroro gets a new anime down the line or whatever. Merely having the original VAs would warrant Sunrise having to get involved? Or is it just use of animated versions of the characters they have the animated rights to, even if it's the alternate versions of said characters?

The Kemono Friends collaboration itself and those Kemono Friends Chaos cards with the Keroro Friends are pretty much the only official Keroro related merchandising from after the anime (and that wasn't a manga bonus) that doesn't credit Sunrise/BNP.

Even those old "Keroro from back then" cards that had different designs for the cast never seen anywhere else (like Keroro with a yellow/red star and Giroro without scar and with a camouflage hat) had credits for Sunrise.

It seems like their license is very extensive. There's a collaboration with a mobile tennis game currently - and yet again, it's specifically licensed from the whole anime production group, with BNP (which replaced Sunrise after the split), Tv Tokyo and such even though it doesn't use anything specifically associated with the anime aside from Keroro's VA.

Much gratitude. Saw them in the thread, but couldn't say that there due to Japmoot's utterly retarded IP range bans. Other than the Toki one which is indeed a bit rough (though, given the way her singing lines were written/drawn in the original, it would of course be difficult), and the significance of the words "a big fuss" being used in the Serval one needing to be explained as written, those are just fine for a first-timer.

Coincidentally, my TL skills also aren't up there, as I've admitted in these threads, but there was a void that needed to be filled, especially considering the recent manga chapters are now the only un-TLed Keroro material and that this is the most extensive story saga in the manga. The KF content and story implications just add a lot of extra incentive.

Not all of them, but a small chunk: Volume 22 and all of the chapters in volume 23 (except 191) have been fan translated for several years now, in addition to the first chapter of volume 24 (195). Then there's nothing until volume 26's chs221 and 222, and then the English Comic Walker chapters.
