My only opinion here is that it feels strange to toss aside in such ungracious manner, in lack of better term, the new characters which they already spent a good deal of time to try to establish.

Also, said "real fans" are the same guys who are shitting all over this specific series for being different from the original. And even with part of the fans of the original shitting on it, 2199 Blu-ray and DVD sales exceeded half a million copies, which probably means it achieved a new generation of fans.

Considering what story arc this is a remake/reboot of, having them not on the ship may actually save them for later stories.

Remember, the Comet Empire are was where this show got the reputation for changing the question from "who is going to die?" to "Who is going to live?"

Yamazaki was originally introduced in the TV movie that was set right after Yamato 2, as an old hand of the ship, who somehow survived after the ship took around 90% casualties.

Niimi would be perfect to have around in the later stories due to her science roots. Especially a Yamato III remake (it needs it). Kiryuu would also be good for that as a linguist.
Misaki and Hoshina represent to survival of the species I would hope, but also would fit in better in Yamato III.

Harada on the other hand...somehow I think she'd going to die with her son on the Moon when Zordar comes to melt it and the Gamilon embassy.

Akira will probably go down like her original (male) predecessor, though I'd rather she stick around due to her awesomeness and voice actress.

This is Legends of the Galactic Heroes sized fleet of just heavy battleships Earth has to deal with. While the 10,000 or so Gamilon warship at the Naval Review at Balun was a huge number, those were mostly cruisers and destroyers. THIS mass is all battleships that are larger than Andromeda.

Kodai's upset that Earth is going back on its word to Starsha on the matter of the wave motion gun. It gets worse since Earth is also used a side effect from the Cosmo Reverse System to exploit a temporal distortion to built their fleet of wave motion guns equipped ships.

However, that is before seeing this massively huge number of heavy battleships. My guess is Kodai's going to have to roll with it to defend Earth. Especially since Yamato's defense of Gamilas is what scored them enough respect to allow Starsha to overlook their blatant corruption of Iscandarian technology and give them the Cosmo Reverse to save Earth.

Well if you pay attention the beams never actually targeted the ship (called the Calakmul). It got fucked up by the ambient energy. With a proper targeting solution, it'd probably been destroyed like the rest.

That or Yamato's convergence style weapon is more effective against larger targets than Andromeda's scatter shot weapons since that's good for taking out fleets of smaller ships (like the majority of the Gamilas and Cometine fleets up to this point). It is fortunate that Andromeda and the Dreadnoughts can fire in a convergence mode as well as the scatter shot mode. Yamato is presently the only know Earth warship equipped with a wave motion gun that cannot fire in scatter shot mode. But can probably fire a slightly wider cone shaped blast to cover that mass of warships.

The other possible plot option were is the large green glowing object in that picture. I think that is an artificial sun that the Gamilas set up as part of the terraforming effort on Planet 11. Yamato's wave motion gun can likely blow that up and the solar mass would send out a wave of destruction into the Cometine fleet. The blast shouldn't hurt the planet too much, since it be like the original series Battle of Balan, where Yamato blew up a similar artificial sun that was being dropped on them by Dommel. It took out the Gamilas base, but the majority of the planet was fine afterwards.
