Saw Kong on a whim and I thought it was way decent. Kaiju wa dope, the obligatory who's-more-human-the-monkey-or-the-man theme, an poking fun at Sam Jack's catchphrase made it a really fun movie. Oh and the whole plot with the funny guy from WWII.

Because those are the kinds of movies we identify when we think of giant monsters. Japan had some good ones like Gojira, which is why Shin Gdzilla can work with an audience familiar with that. Meanwhile US giant monsters were fun schlock, like THEM!, Tarantula, Giant Claw, Giant Behemoth, and the majority of kaiju movies we ended up getting.

You ever wanted to watch a hybrid Vietnam War/King Kong movie? It's a pretty good one of those. Human characters are all pretty paper-thin except for John C. Reily but the monsters and action are as good as you'd expect from a giant monster movie. Kong himself was decent, he just pales in comparison to the original or Andy Serkis' Kong.
