I'm the guy making weird story and space-swimsuit essay, here's another storyline:

Some investigator take as a whimsy bet to find out why female uniform "keep getting sexier and sexier".
The investigation turn out to be muuuuuch deeper and freaky than he imagined.
There's an actual conspiracy from a bunch of female Admiral trying to create a matriarchy by applying rigorously gender equity (no feminism please!) but controlling/dominating males through sex appeal.
Looking for who actually let that conspiracy happen the investigator follow the butler (always them!) who look to be the tools of a male admiral, turn out he is himself the puppet of his falsely submissive wife.
After a chase by women soldier in bikini with guns (they were all on a female-only vacation space colony) and other hilarity, he unravel his way to the upmost highest seat of power, he discover the Omnipotent Supreme Messianic Council of Wisdom simply wanted mankind to have more child to justify invading new land, but civilian weren't patriotic enough.
after hearing that the investigator just leave, unworried because he's noticed during all his journey that military were only interested in SEX not child and pretty happy with the peace.

It's a quirk of the time Yamato was made. Something like Muv-Luv, in comparison, is more even in having people wear tight suits in the military (although some girls get custom color schemes, but that's the extent of it).

Actually, the remake enhanced even more the distinction. Although even in the original the men had looser pants, while Yuki's was all form fitting, in the remake the men's suits became more military-like, while the women's received a bunch of extra lines to accentuate the body hugging.

With that suit you'll die whatever happens which is stupid. If the mecha is incapacitated you can still survive with a normal pilot's suit. But with a bathing suit you're hosed. That was the most stupid element of Gunbuster.

Desperate times comes desperate measures. If a full suit will slow you down and get you kill whats the point of worrying about the aftermath. Thats like running with full gears on when you are getting chased . You only take want you might need and drop the rest.
