It was actually an innovative approach. Take the combat for example. Because the weapons weren't beam weapons, combat had more weight to it. When someone got hit with a battle ax it looked like it hurt. When people died in battle we see them slowly crushed to death in the cockpit. Not as abstract as being blown up, being crushed is something people have context for. The complete lack of random explosions also made survival more believable.
