Maybe it's too soon to say this, but I think Toei wants to create a secondary line of shows, with old heroes and a bit more mature themes. A regular 50 episodes is almost impossible (and Sentai is more light vibe than ever). However, I think these movies with 80's style can be a great path to follow. They just need to create good histories for other heroes, not just Gavan and Deka.

Actually it's the Sakamoto Avengers series.
It has nothing to do with mature themes.
This line didn't really go through Hikasa and Shirakura until the end product comes out.
Again the project is completely based on the sales of the series.
This one got lucky with the sales of Space Sheriff Next Generation. If the movie bombed there is no next installment, as said at the movie screening event.

More like lack of toy sales. Based on what's said in the Japanese wikipedia, lack of sales of previous series led to B-Fighter taking many Super Sentai elements. It was successful, but B-Fighter Kabuto right afterwards had much lower sales in spite of keeping the same formula. Then, they went in a completely different direction to differentiate metal hero from Sentai, resulting in Kabutack, which actually had good sales, but, just like Kabuto, Robotack dropped again. They just didn't manage to find a formula that worked with the franchise for an extended period, then Heisei Rider blew up and they never looked back.

So how well is Space Squad doing in terms of reception / box office?

To me, movie was OK - good, but could have been a lot better.

Maybe I'm setting the bar too high here, but for the info and previous photos, I was expecting something like Sharivan Next (the more serious movie of this entire Space Cops revival). However, it's just an 80 minutes extended Deka episode, with Gavan getting ass blasted while making quips.

And the final "fight" with Satan Goth was extremely lame. Pure waste of potential.

With Shelly withdrawing from Gavan's team I'm hoping Sakamoto will do a girls only team spinoff in parallel with Space Squad main story.
The lack of female combat suit really bothers me when Annie has one, Julia (Gavan's student) has her own, Minerva (investigator from the comic) has black bootleg, Spielban got the female crystal suits. Hopefully more female suits will be introduced in the latter movies.

So looking at the actual ticket sales number it's around 300 tickets being sold per day after the first 2 days, and has accumulated around somewhere around 6~7 million yen in the last 6 days (including special screening events with cast talks and stuff). It's pretty much up to sales and streaming now.

Hard to believe, since GavanG in Gavan Next and Shaider's suit in SHTZ received physical damage - and Toei have been doing that shit since 82/83...

Don't know if Toei simply cancelled the contract with Rainbow Inc. and started to make their own suits, but this looks a stepback (in terms of action quality). Even using 2 different suits like in 80's-90's, the metal one for shots and spandex for action, I love real sparks - and today definitely should be easier to make it than 30 years ago.

And Jiban, Fire, Spielban and Juspion destroyed the shit out of them (good times).

Ranbow still makes their suits, but they are more into making local heroes suits recently. Toei isn't their biggest customer anymore.
Also Space Squad was supposed to be a project for launch in 2015. Due to Sakamoto's schedule filming got pushed to late 2016.
Rainbow and Toei doesn't store their suits anymore so they can only get those made when Sakamoto is available for the filming. Since there they can't spare to lose any of the suits they can only stay away from the rough course.

Great mech, nice monsters (in a general way), Darth Vader clone and tons of practical effects.

And it's not just the only MH with official robot, from the very beginning to the very end, but also better than 95% of all Sentais. Flying kicks, summersaults, beam duels and even suplex, all this without CGi or even chroma, only using wires. How many Sentais did all that? No fucking way.

Mia, and some kids, was the weakest part in Juspion.

Some toys used the original molds, but they only released cheap stuff like vinyl figures at first and repacked some of their old toy lines like Rambo and Robocop. Kamen Rider Black Henshin Belt was released without even a paint job and the silver chrome the original japanese had, but it's the real deal. The same company later brought us the proper toy line for Winspector and Solbrain.

Alright, I'm going to try to get a couple of friends i know into Tokusatsu and I plan on using Gavan next generation as the introduction (Since it is only six movies and not a whole tv show, I think it would be the best)

So I'm thinking of having them watch it in this order

Gavan the movie -> Sharivan -> Shaider -> Gokaiger vs Gavan -> Girls in Trouble -> Space Squad

So Gavan/Sharivan/Shaider are there for obvious reasons, since these are their first outings and doesn't need prior knowledge. Of course this makes Retsu the Mentor of the group.

Then ofcourse Gavan vs Gokaiger as after thoe three movies, not only do you have a bit of knowledge of Space Sheriffs to help out, but in this sense you get a Retsu movie, making this a Mentor film as opposed to just a regular crossover.

I don't know much about Juspion, but Mad Gallant is a pretty sick design despite how "simple" it is. It's a shame Metal Hero Figuarts are pretty much dead outside of the Gavan Renewal/Saibarain and Retsu figures.

I think from all the MH, Juspion is the most merciless of them - he doesn't care about fighting fair (although he isn't an ass about it), and he goes for the final attack as soon as possible, even against the enemy generals. They only survive because black magic and stuff.

No doubt. The character is a self-made-guy, basically don't have anything to develop. Also don't have much drama related to him during the show (Eijin's death in the very-very-end don't even count).
