/m/ likes to call regular Gundam just "toy commercials", but apart from the meta series like the Gunpla Builders and Build Fighters ones, Twilight Axis is one of the few Gundam animations that is genuinely just a toy commercial. From the top of my head, the only other plain toy commercial Gundam animations were the Astray shorts for SEED.

Will this be like Origin or Thunderbolt where I have to wait seven years before I can watch it all, or is it a one, and done?

Gundam series are defined by gunpla sales, all this has is the Tristan which defied all expectations and actually sold well. However, everything else is old recolored P-Bandai kits.

Is there anything to back this up? All I've seen are a few photos of dozens of Tristan kits sitting on shelves, one even had a few Alex kits mixed in. I know some Japs have been going nuts with modding the kit to have modern articulation but they're really few and far between considering the amount of effort needed. Frankly I just don't want the Tristan to sell well anyway because between it and the p bandai zaku iii Twilight Axis has had shamefully bad Gunpla releases.

I think what's been going on with the kits so far is pretty telling of Bamco's expectations of the show.
The only regular release kit is the Tristan, which is cheaply made and uses recycled parts from a far too old kit which lead to a disastrous reception on release. Bandai wasn't expecting much from this kit as evident from the half-assed marketing and just not giving a shit about it's poor sales and reception. Meanwhile they're pushing a bunch of new releases, completely unrelated to the brand new show, hard.
All the others are P-Bandai only released recolors of kits as old if not older than the one the Tristan's reused parts came from. Kits like this are more often than not p-bandai exclusive specifically because they don't expect them to sell well.

If Bandai doesn't seem to have much faith in Twilight Axis, why should we?

Basically this is just world building for late UC.

The two main things that Twilight Axis is doing for the overall UC Narrative is
-Expanding upon the elimination of psychoframe by the Federation, explaining why it's not seen again in UC (Until Angel Halo?)
-Revealing the Ronah's origins and setting up for F91 (Frontier Side is under construction)

Did any of this need to be explained? I don't think so, but it's neat world building that avoids ridiculous amounts of retcons like OYW era material does

I dunno, I liked the battles in Unicorn - and Ark Performace' manga have some great battles that deserve animating; but so much was changed in the story of Unicorn for the worse. I wouldn't really care to see that happen.

Since Ark Performance place so much emphasis on slow story telling and world building I'd much rather see their stuff get the Turn A treatment - maybe not that many episodes but the same rate of pacing. I wonder what would happen if Johnny Ridden ever got adapted, if they'd have to do the obligatory shoe in Gundam for Johnny to be testing early in the show (Gerbera Gundam since it's Zeek tech they investigate?).

It's a shame their Gundam stuff doesn't get more attention.

Because Bandai literally reuses molds all the time. There are enough variants of the RX-78-2 and Zaku molds to blot out the sun, to say nothing of how they milk the Unicorn. They've been milking the 2.0 MG frames forever. Fuck, the Origin and IBO lines have mostly been retools of the Origin Zaku and Gundam/Graze inner frames, but no one minds because those are damn good.

The only reason people care about this is because they could have reused a newer mold (like the Revive Mk-II). Also because it looks like garbage.

Retooling a mold means you physically alter a mold, as in you literally take the tool (the mill) to the mold, as in you carve a completely new negative space from the same piece of metal. That's not what happened. Bandai made new molds just for the Tristan. Everything is CNC now, they took a computer file and used a computer to carve out a new mold.

The laziness here is in the design, because they probably had the files to create the Alex's molds and it would've been a minimal change. A big change like Mk-II to Tristan would've required actually paying their engineers to make sure the design will pop out of the mold properly.

There was an interview waaaaaaay back where someone asked Tomino if G-Reco was tied to UC. He said it was after the end of UC. People took that to mean *immediately* after UC, and further took the similar names of nations in G-Reco and Turn-A to mean that the timeline was UC->RC->CC and that Tomino had thrown all the other Gundam shows back out of the timeline. People who don't like UC and CC sharing the same universe as SEED and G ran with this and told fans of "AU" shows to fuck off.
Then Tomino doubled-back on them and said that Reco was after Turn A. So these people, in order to continue to hold their sacred Tomino Gundam above all other shows, have had to resort to attacking Tomino's credibility which is pretty funny when you consider that he's the writer and director of the show that made all the other shows canon (Turn A). Also there are at least a few people who just really really love Turn A to the point that they don't want to think about it's place as "THE END OF ALL GUNDAM" being undone even by its own writer. Also the implication (and word of the designer) that an extra five centuries of technological progress from the moonies means the Turn A is no longer the most advanced Gundam in the franchise.

Its like that crazy fanfiction idea Square had to tie FF10 to FF7 by saying they colonized the FF7 planet. They're too different for me to just accept it like that.
