It's pretty, action packed, has cool looking monsters, and some decent characters.
The plot isn't even that hard to follow if you watch it in the right order.

Like almost everything I watch, I like the overall designs for everything more than the story or characters. Fights were mostly good too. I still don't know why the Angels just couldn't be buddy buddy with the Humans, there's literally no reason for them to consciously start 3rd impact.

Complaining about eva's symbolism is like complaining about Gundam colors. It's just an aesthetic thing, you weren't supposed to think it meant anything and you should stop blaiming the show for not having something it never pretended to have.

They are called angels because Seele is crazy. They don't come with dog tags, they don't introduce themselves, Kaoru has no clue why we keep using dumb words and just rolls with it. Evangelion has technical spots of excellence but taken as a whole I think it's quite mediocre.
The character cast, especially the main character doesn't help matters.
What it boils down to is that Evangelion more than any other anime is chained to 1990s Japan and the relevance today just isn't there. The remakes just underline how out of date thematically Evangelion really is.

It's a show with some cool action and visual direction that uses crazy scenarios as a way of exploring themes of isolation and intimacy. Despite the bombast and weirdness, it's a pretty personal story. It's not a perfect show, but people get fixated on the wrong things with it sometimes.

But in general adding "during war" makes a them incopatible. Cooking during war, loneliness during war, slice of life during war, hs comedy during war. Those shows won't be the same.

Eva is just another case of a succesful product trying to change to appeal to a new demographic and loosing the original while barely getting anyone new.

If you liked the original series there's very little to get from the rebuilds. Or Girlfriend of Steel. Or that other romantic manga. Or those two or three videogames (the date sims and the fighting one).

I like Evangelion.

I really wish there was a really good game based on Evangelion that does not try to mimic life simulation or dating like in Evangelion Jo on PS2\PSP. Something like a mix of those Gundam games with CoC: Dark Corners, sanity system and all. And some creative liberties with how injuries work.
