Maybe its one intended for existing fans of the series (though I had seen the previous anime, for which this is a prequel), but without any of that background it was... weak. Characters are a mix of cliches you've seen a hundred times before and the plot hinges on them making the dumbest decisions for arbitrary reasons. It felt to me watching like they very much did. Towards the end there was a lot of the bad guys doing suicidally stupid things because 'evil lol'. The show did do a good job of making me hate the villains though. Like watching that stasi cunt get fucked hardcore was so hype and satisfying.

Honestly I kind of like the setting for Muv-Luv more than the characters. I largely don't care about the characters.

For example, Schwarzeneggermarken, which is an excellent example of how to have lots of things that could have gone quite well, and do all of them wrong; the characters being big part of this problem. The lack of ideological conflict is a big part of the problem; Beatrix is the only character to profess any sort of ideological or philosophical thesis, but that doesn't work because her thesis was dumb.

They could have had Beatrix promoting nazism and Katia advocating for capitalism and democracy, and then have Iris represent a synthesis and advocate some sort of Third Position to unite against the real threat, but instead she just flops around and the other characters are mostly window dressing.

Beatrix's game and CG scenario is from Lise's route. It'll be the first SM scenario that doesn't adhere to Katia's route. Jap speculation is that the scene is going to involve Theo and Lise in someway.

So why does Beatrix go so easy on Theo? She had multiple opportunities to stab him in their fights, but keeps kicking or knocking him around instead. She even gets behind him, surprising Theo, who resigns himself to death, and then wastes the opportunity by kicking him away.

Also, interesting thing to note, but Beatrix doesn't bantz with anyone but Iris. In all of Katia's route, she only says one line in battle (discounting her final conversations with Theo). People yell at, insult, threaten, or talk about revenge to her all the time, but she just gives them the cold shoulder, whereas we all know she behaved and treated her opponents in the anime. There's seems to be no emotion from her, just cold, detached, lethal precision. It's just kinda weird watching the anime and then comparing it to the VN.

Yeah. Alternative wouldn't have had the impact it had, IMO, if I wasn't faced with the juxtaposition of all these cute, happy characters forced into the hell of an alien war. Lise's card's special starts with an AOE wave for up to 800% dmg then switches to a sort of "berserk" mode where you can't really control her aside from targeting which enemy she goes for next while she has a really high speed and damage boost. If the stage boss pops up while she's in that mode her special meter resets meaning you can fill it again and stack the current damage boost on top of the AOE multiplying the already multiplied damage modifier and making for an absurdly powerful attack, especially when using a damage focused tsf like the new MiG-23 that came with this event.

This ends up instakilling bosses on all but the highest rank stages which is cool and great for S ranking missions quickly but if you're going for item collection like in this event its best to not sick Lise on the boss right away if she's already used her special, otherwise she can kill it faster than the game can register.

In the VN though, Beatrix destroys Heim's artillery (in Katia's route) early on, and the final fight is around stasi HQ.

Valvrave has many, many problems: it is rapey, frequently exploitative in its depiction of violence, shoddily written, and patched together from ideas taken from anime tropes at large and from other mecha series, both good and bad. But its core problem, ultimately, is that it simply has no core. It is an empty shell of a series, and, in my opinion, an utter and complete waste of time as a result. I've given better ratings to series that are arguably much worse and much more offensive than this one, with Kite coming to mind as as example, but in each of those cases there was at least something at the center that could be followed and picked apart, something with some consistency to it. There is simply nothing inside of Valvrave the Liberator, and in tandem with its content, there's something especially horrifying to me about that.
So here it is: Valvrave, or Valvrape as perhaps better fits its horrifyingly lax attitude towards sexual violence. I could give it a slightly better rating, based on its visuals and occasional moments of entertainment value, but there's a reason I won't: it's a void. I see it as nothing more than an empty space with pieces of other series and scenes of pure shock value thrown into it, and anyone who enjoys this schlock is the cancer that is killing /m/.

Sometimes, there are hooks, arcs that are terminated in an unfulfilling way (such as what SM purposefully does to heighten its tragedy), or things of interest that are left unexplored in a story. They leave holes in your heart or questions of what-if. Fanfiction is a way to fill in those "holes," so to speak or answer those questions. It's like how /a/ had a ton of SM fanfics after the anime ended just because they were feeling so hollow and incomplete (now that I think about it, SM has a ton of Jap and Chinese fanfiction too).

Most fanfiction is just terrible though. Even the ones that have good, clear prose and setup tend to run out of steam or ideas.

I don't think they ever retconned her to begin with. Saying that, I preferred the version I heard of initially. Tragic waifus who are bitches on the outside, broken and crying on the inside are a dime a dozen, but how many truly evil, repulsive semen demons are there, especially in a work like Muv-Luv? Anime Beatrix was a fun villain, someone you could really despise and who was terrifying despite her attractiveness. They ruined it by trying to write in some of her backstory though. Cut those bits out, make her motives purely selfish and cynical, and leave the Beatrix who tried to fire on Katia's station, got off on execution and torture, and smirked when she heard the news of Lise's death and you'd have the Beatrix I wanted.

Not only out of character but good thing this isn't canon because they couldn't have picked a worse context possible for a sex scene unless they wanted to make Beatrix look even more like a hypocritical dirtbag and take some of her last remaining virtues away. Intentionally undercutting Lise as well as her excuses about "muh Jurgen" at the same time. Not to mention giving her supposedly virgin body away to a guy she just met for no reason who already made it clear he doesn't like or agree with her. Makes it funnier though that if she were to actually do this in that route then Theo pumps and dumps her(as she'd deserve in this scenario) before helping Iris kill her and running back to Lise.

Well, Beatrix does view Lise's attachment to Theo as foolish to begin with (I know, hypocritical considering Jurgen). Also, she could be attracted to Theo. There's hints in the LN, especially once she starts (wrongly) projecting pieces of Iris/Jurgen/herself onto him. She wouldn't have talked to him at length about her ideals otherwise, or respected him enough to want to give him a death worthy of an eishi when he told her how much he hates her. There's also the fact that she lets him into the fold pretty quickly in Lise's route (enough that the other Werewolves make a big deal of it), and even talks about assigning a MiG-27 to him when she gets another one.

Don't try to make sense of it, Beatrix would have to be a monumental shitter to not just backbite Lise like that despite knowing what it would do to her but after holding out on having sex with Jurgen till after marriage despite officially dating him for years to then pull this crap just because there are hints she might be projecting things onto Theo or could find him attractive? Its just hentai logic that I really can't take seriously as being representative of the actual characters or their actions and trying to explain it as such just makes it look worse.

It does fits her teenage personality, however it does not fit her adult one though. And making it canon, that "Strafe™" was only facade while she remained a dorky tsundere within, is shit writing. But that isn't exactly new for SM.

Humanizing the villain fits into the general spirit of the franchise, "evil to the core" Beatrix might have been fresh, but it wasn't Muv-Luv. They could, and should, have done a better job though and spared us the jarring difference between the adult one and the teenage one by humanizing her in a different way.

I would have prefered for them to have shown her thought processes, her arguments more fleshed out and shown some regret or at least self doubt. They showed hints of it, but she is mostly opaque so its always easy to dismiss them like Theo does in story.

In all of these there is more character continuity and proper development, while Beatrix remains a moeblob by autumn '77, despite already being Stasi, and hating their guts and the system at the time, and is supposed to go full sadistic killer and true believer in them in less than 9 months. Its far more jarring than Irisdina's development or Lise's traumatic experiences.

Well, she was always predisposed towards authoritarianism at the start, and her family was one of the founding families of the DDR. From a young age she had a belief that progress and history requires sacrifice for the greater good. Still, she wanted personal freedom (to marry Jurgen), and considered her family to be a prison. Perhaps she saw the wisdom of her father towards the end.

Additionally, much happened during Jurgen's final months to Beatrix. She lost her family, she's had to kill and interrogate innocents for Axmann, her whole family line was purged, all of her friends abandoned her, Iris told her off, and Jurgen died. That's a lot of character development. Also remember that only the first half of BiS has been covered. Like SM, BiS is likely to condense the most traumatic, and character forming block into a very small window of time compared to the rest of the story (the second half of SM takes place over the course of less than one week, whereas the first half was three months).

Look, the contrast and mystery between who Beatrix seems to be, and what's inside is what makes her so compelling. Beatrix seems evil, and everyone in game talks about how horrible she is, yet her downfall many times in the VN is when she decides to be her true self and do the "nice" or right thing rather than the pragmatic evil one. You think her opaqueness is bad, I think it adds to her character as you have to read what she does. She's someone who's trying to do whatever is necessary to survive, and believes that terror and evil are the means to do so, yet her conscience always betrays her in the end. I just think that it's interesting that for once, it's a villain's innate goodness rather than their evilness that does them in.

It is, just look how we have had the same arguments again and again since november 2015. Just by making her less opaque the whole thing would have finally put to rest. Instead even mentioning Beatrix, or posting two pictures of her in a row, causes /m/ to have a short meltdown of autism.
