I'm only aware of the villain from the TV version, who was voiced by Bright's VA.
Who else was there?

Same. The reboot was short but comfy and it would be nice to see more of the new crew. Also would be nice to figure out what links they have to the original SV 2.
>>
>>15611867
Life sucks sometimes
>>
>>15611860
Damn, that sucks, but to be fair she already got a replacement character in the TV-verse. If EZY(?) is in the same vein as the live-action series and focuses on a new cast, with cameos and references to the original cast here and there, I don't think it should be that much of an issue.
Considering that it'll most likely be a 12 episode series, I just hope they don't go full muh SERIOUS PLOT, but gives us primarily standalone SoL episodes with maybe a small more serious arc for the last 3 of 4 episodes. Like, almost exactly what the New Files OVA did, where the bulk of the episodes weren't part of a single arc. If it's 24 - 26 then I'd be perfectly fine with several arcs. It just wouldn't be Patlabor without the comfy police SoL comedy episodes.
>>
>>15611895
Pretty much exactly what I'm hoping for out of it.

You can sprinkle some bits of the overarching arc into every episode even, as long as it's not the main focus until the final few eps.

>everyone conveniently forgetting that Patlabor Reboot featured some of the best use of CGI ever
>>
>>15612283
Granted, it was a short with some talented people behind it, but I would love if the 3DCG in the upcoming one was like this.
Unfortunately given money, scheduling, and staff constraints, I don't think the 3DCG is going to look that good. I hope it will be, but in all likelihood it won't.
Hand drawn is out of the question in this day and age, I'd rather have the Labors be on model than IBO level QUALITY. Whether it's Production I.G or modern Sunrise, 3DCG would be the best option.
Like it or hate it, like gay marriage or "diversity" in media, 3DCG is here to stay.
With the mindset of
>or nothing at all please
we might as well just end anime today.
>>
>>15612383

Since they're 3D models, they can re-use them. That is likely the main purpose for the short. Create some assets that can be re-used, and gauge whether there's enough interest for a full series.
>>
>>15612283
That's not CG, or if it was it was drawn over.

Models have these things called normals that typically point out perpendicular to the surface from which it originates and it's used to determine how light interacts with the surface. Which means you wouldn't get those nice crispy shading as if everything was a cube with perfectly distinct sides, that doesn't seem to make any sense
>>
>>15612283
No

>>
>>15612429
Either way it'll still be CG - computer generated. How do you think they drew over the model if not on a computer and then inserting it into the scene via computer? It's a stylistic choice, but still CG all the same.

>>
>>15612804

Yeah I have to stop and wonder how much these people who complain about CG actually remember about hand drawn stuff. The OVA was mostly pretty good looking but the TV was fugly in places
>>
>>15612434
Threadly reminder that drawn-over-CG has been used in anime since the 80s, the only reason you can tell it's CG in reboot is because they didn't do a good enough job of hiding it, they followed the CG models too closely.

Not as impressive as fully hand drawn animation from a craftsmanship standpoint but when done well using CG frames as a base can look pretty good, CG isn't always bad.
>>
>>15611149
Don't assume the old cast of characters will be back

That's probably for the best anyways

>>
>>15613174
I wish fully CG anime would just stop trying to look like hand animation, it doesn't work, I'd be down for more anime that look like that one Appleseed movie with the more realistic style.

Video games these days look better than stuff like Knights of Sidonia, I want an entire show that looks like an MGS-V cutscene.
>>
>>15613186
>MGS-V cutscene
MGSV was just bad realistic CG. Most of the faces were even just straight up scanned from people. Realistic CG is a menace that's killing artistry in the western game industry.
>>
>>15613186
Well, even though I agree that trying to imitate limited hand-drawn animation isn't the right way, I don't want 3DCG anime going full realism. If I want realistic style, I will just watch something live-action, honestly.
Knights of Sidonia adapted character designs to 3D badly, but I liked action scenes. Then, there are BBK\BRNK and ID-0 which adapted usual for anime character designs really good, but animators are trying too hard to imitate limited animation. There is also Kemono Friends, where animators found a compromise. They did character designs specially for 3DCG and modeled them with consideration of 3DCG quirks. Also they didn't try to imitate limited traditional animation, so movements are much smoother than aforementioned BBK or ID-0.
>>
>>15613173
>As in CG is a tool and a tool can't be bad?

Naturally.
>>15613175
>It can be pretty bad, subjectively speaking.

So can't hand drawn. I mean how often have we seen what amounts to still images and the animators just sliding the cel around
>>
>>15613221
>So can't hand drawn. I mean how often have we seen what amounts to still images and the animators just sliding the cel around
That's true.

As a point, though, we've seen all ranges of hand drawn, and I've yet to see CGI that I'd call "really good". I've seen CGI that doesn't look bad, true, but the only times I've seen a sequence or a frame that I thought was extraordinarily good, it's been pretty clearly hand drawn.

>>
>>15613236
I haven't seen any of those, though I did hear MJP had some pretty good CGI. The clip you posted is certainly not bad, and while I don't like it visually, that's more because of the camera jitter than the models. I'm not sure if I'd call it "very good" to the extent that absurd hand drawn stuff can be.
>>
>>15613236
Bubuki Buranki is an excellent example as well, but it doesn't look quite as good in motion as it does in stills.
>>
>>15613257

It looks a lot better on Blu Ray than it does on a shitty webm, mind you and there's some stuff in the movie thats even better. Etotama's not remotely /m/ but I wish more people would watch it becuase damn was it a surprise.

It kills me that it tanked while that Kemomo shit prints money

Yeah, I'm really really excited about this. A Pluto animation AND Patlabor? It's like somebody in Japan somehow knew exactly what my most fervent anime-related wishes were. Seems like it'll be good to be a /m/echa fan this year.

>>15613186
>I want an entire show that looks like an MGS-V cutscene.

Yeah. I was also talking about this with some other folks, the cutscenes from the Berserk Musou game do a better job than all the CG in the actual anime. Sometimes it seems like all the good CG art you find in vidya.

>>15613221
Speaking of Berserk, I was watching the '97 anime and it seemed they used that "still pan" technique a lot. It was also common in a lot of other anime, like for action scenes you'd just see a still shot of stuff exploding and people screaming. I dunno, a lot of folks like that method better. Maybe there's just more tolerance for very limited animation as opposed to poorly-done animation.

Are you perhaps referring to the spinning solar system bit in Daicon IV? Because something like that is going to be the extent of it during the 80s and the first half of the 90s. Something more complicated would not have been effective as a cost-saving measure, so if you were going through the expense of using CG animation, you'd be showing it off as CG.

And that's all putting aside that the tools and expertise to make the motion of CG animation look good would not have been widely available (if at all) at the time, so it would not have been worth tracing unless you were going for a smooth and artificial look (good luck making anything rotoscoped look smooth, though).
