I need to play some mech games

I've played all the mainstream stuff, so let's have a thread for more obscure / forgotten mecha games, even if they're not the greatest

Have you taken a crack at Japan-only games? If you are ok with fumbling through some text there's great strategy and action games, like the Gundam game series Gihren's Greed. An English PC action RPG game that's fairly mechanical but not really giant robots, more about cyborgs, is EYE Divine Cybermancy, weird but rather fun.
>>
>>15610062
EYE isn't english, it's French. Which is why the translation is so wonky, because the translators either didn't know French very well or didn't know English very well.
>>
>>15610062
EYE is the best thing, there's nothing better than a minigun uzi.

It's this good. You also have a wide selection of vehicles across three different main categories to choose from, but each has subcategories ranging from a giant tower on tank treads to a powersuit only slightly larger than the civilians walking around the map. In turn there are a lot more variants used by the enemy factions.

Front Mission: Gun Hazard is probably closer to a 2D Armored Core because you can customize parts though it's limited.

Both are great though. Definitely play through the translated Valken ROM instead of Cybernator so you can see the prime minister of space an hero himself.

Metal Arms is one of the greatest shooters of all time. It's about a robot in a world of robots fighting to free his side from the oppression of a giant robot designed to be the next step in intelligence and power, and the plot overall is pretty standard stuff, but where it gets its strength is the gameplay.

Controls are weird and take getting used to, but once you're used to them and the physics you can do some pretty cool shit. Some of the weapons are standard in basic (there's a basic spam weapon a la the Mega Buster for when you're out of ammo, sniping weapon, a bazooka, a shotgun, and a machinegun for instance) but there's a level up system where you purchase levels as you go in and most of them get a lot cooler (the spam weapon is one of the best in the game because it can charge up - again, Mega Buster - the sniping weapon drives stakes into things and at higher levels those stakes catch on fire and explode, the bazooka shots split into four rockets, the shotgun has surprising range and is semiautomatic... the machinegun is the one odd one) and some of the other weapons are just really out there - the second weapon you get is specifically designed to rip limbs off shit so you can disable their weapons, there's a gun that lets you take over enemy robots, there's a grenade that does similar shit, there's another... grenade? That hits a bunch of shit and homes in and flies and is basically death incarnate. Loads of fun stuff.

Also good multiplayer last I remember.

And if you're near a cliff on the stages with those, you might not be on that cliff anymore after it hits.

There's an awkward gap between the heaviest tanks which can knock down three tiles worth of stuff at once and the lowest weight range which have none of the ramming power of their larger cousins and none of the speed either. Sometimes not even any of the firepower. Mostly they're good for slightly higher vehicle multipliers to the final payout or low vertical profile.

The best class I think is one of the faster, lighter A-gravs like the Pompadour or Canavan flying sedans with cloak if you're going to get into straight up fights or EMP if you can sneak around. All A-gravs can fly over short cover and have an easier time of dodging incoming fire while returning it, unlike the Troubadour. Strafe when you're flying straight at a target to jink projectiles or need to hit the side or rear armour at close range, and just flick the mouse around to make fine movements or make attack runs on patrols.

I've found VOTOMS Koutetsu no Gunzei to be kinda lacking. It's a Front Mission clone with 1/4 of its features. What made me really hate the game is how it takes away mechs and characters away from you without any kind of warning. Your final roster is made up of low-mid end ATs, instead of the high-end ones you had a few stages before.
Also, there's only one named enemy, and he's not even the final boss.

One Must Fall: 2097. It's quite old now, but it's a very functional fighter with a lengthy tournament mode, decently wide variety of mechs (one's a literal edgelord with giant knives for hands, one beats you with chains, one stops time, etc.), and the most satisfying CLANG noises I've heard in a video game, especially when you get a longer combo going.

>>15612559
I've played this series in the PS2, and I don't think they're very good games. IIRC, there are three games:
- G-Breaker: Third World War of Cloudia
- G-Breaker 2: Alliance's Counterattack
- G-Breaker: Legend of Cloudia

The first two games are squad SRPGs, kinda like Front Mission Alternative (not real time, though), while Legend of Cloudia is that Armored Core clone that you posted in your image. As an AC clone, it's severely lacking too - the stages have very few enemies (and you don't even need to defeat most of them), repeat like 3 times each until the end of the story (kinda like those Neptunia games), and is totally skewed towards missiles. The customization is just switching parts around, and upgrading Attack/Speed/Armor. Actually, Speed is so OP that you shouldn't upgrade anything else. Just zip around the enemies.
When you finish the game once (it's rather short), you get to play as one of your rivals, with 2 less stages than the main character, but his robot is totally different.
I remember someone posted the links between G-Breaker and Sunrise Eiyuutan in a prior thread - I think the MC of G-Breaker is the father of the MC in Eiyuutan.

This was my favorite fighting game as a kid. The tournament mode was really cool with its RPG elements. I remember trying to max out every robot on the highest difficulty.

The "fatality" moves were rad too and I loved the little touches like the news media coverage and the grumpy mechanic who hates his wife.

I probably owe a lot of my fascination with mecha to this game now that I'm stopping to think about it.

I am probably better off if I remodel my mechs into lewdbots
>>
>>15613170
I just remember how much fun it was when i attacked Jaburo in that game and when there was like only two Zaku 1s remaining i had lost my both arms and was body slamming the two.
Then at one point i lost my head but kept on body slamming and kicking them.

It was genuinly fun.
>>
>>15613203
why do they just keep sliding across the floor like a bunch of ice skaters? do your robots not know how to walk or run? haven't seen them jump either... at least add SOME physics to the mechs...

Too much physics = no fun
Too little physics = boring

find a good balance of physics and realism to contrast the awesome science fiction of giant fighting robots...

So pretty new when it comes to PC gaming, but I'm wondering where are some good PS2 and/or PS3 emulators I could use?

I definitely wanna play some Armored Core on my PC and laptop.
>>
>>15613308
For PS2, there's PCSX2, it's pretty good and I can run most things with only a bit of speed loss at worst.
PS3 is still being worked on, but watch RPCS3. It can run Z3.1 and .2 decently well from what I know.
Try PPSSPP too, for PSP emulation. The lighter games should be able to run at decent speed on a tablet.
>>
>>15613321
I have a GT 730 on this little old comp. Will this be enough to run any emulted games? Like say, all games from PS1 to 2, GB to DS, N64, etc.? I know this sounds like a /v/ question but I'm dying to play me some Retro AC & Steel Battalion stuff.
>>
>>15613329
And by that I mean, will I run into any problems like lag, choppy sounds and glitches etc. I really miss Nine Breaker.
>>
>>15613329
Eyeballing it, you'd have issues with Gamecube or PS2, but anything older or portable should run alright enough.

>>
>>15613329
>I have a GT 730 on this little old comp. Will this be enough to run any emulted games?

GPU in general doesn't have a massive effect on emulation speed. You've got a pretty shitty one so you won't be able to do all those fancy 5 times upscaled, AA-on sort of stuff but the base game up to about 2x upscale shouldn't be a problem on anything.

What it really comes down to is your CPU.

ATC Raycrash a really obscure arena battle MMO which was actually pretty good but died way back and was surprisingly balanced. Most of the mechs were able to directly counter another one and had multiple loadouts which kept games fresh.

https://youtu.be/d9xCCEnZHs4
https://youtu.be/acVwI2cWmKo

Once you got good at the game you could some really insanely intense fun dogfights going like so.

https://youtu.be/dxC2ACsvL_U

>>15609999
I remember this game dying the same death as most MMO games being a complete grind and taking fucking forever to update as well, it also has a completely awful hit register which turned it into a point & click game.

Only thing it had going for it was some neat designs.

OP mentioned Exteel and you sure as hell can't play that anymore.
>>
>>15613256
Given how much I see older Armored Core games in what you showed, consider a soft lock-on box on the screen, having to shoot so precisely in a somewhat fast paced game seems just obnoxious. This also means radar / marking units on screen.

If you don't want mechs to walk, take away the feet and have them float / slide around ZoE style.

Consider having booster being used in short bursts to zigzag/close distance/move between covers. You kind of started doing that by the end of the video.

Overally looks pretty okay though, keep it up.
>>
>>15613402
It should be fine, from what I can tell its a bit better than my FX 4300, and that can run most things decently well without any overclocking.

>OP mentioned Exteel and you sure as hell can't play that anymore.

He obviously wants to try out/play an obscure/forgotten game. How the hell is he gonna do that if raycrash is DEAD.

Axis Arena, a Korean arena FPS/TPS on PC.
You can mix-and-match from the small-ish selection of parts and muck around with your color scheme.

The developer gave publishing rights to RealMedia, who put up a stripped-down version for their now-defunct RealArcade service. That's the version you might still find on file sharing sites nowadays.

Not pictured:
Silver Knights, also on PC, also a TPS.
A douin game somewhat reminiscent of Virtual On. There was an English fan translation, but the fanbase wasn't big or long-lasting enough.
The Wikipedia entry might have links.

Also, Bootfighter Windom XP SP-2. Also a doujin game originally, and also got a fan translation, but got a lot of attention, so the sequel was picked up for sale.

that's basically what you did though. furniture and office utilities don't do battle or walk around. Your "clockwork planet" just rearranges itself. I bet rubix cubes are /m/ to you too.

the point of my analogy was that fax machines, and printers are just machines. not actual /m/echa. your "clockwork planet" from your non-/m/ game is nothing but an oversized machine. once again, barely anything mecha in your game.

Monster Rancher had robot monsters yet it doesn't count as /m/ either.
>>
>>15615703
What was the sequel called? "Embarrased" Gear? "Ashamed" Gear?

Fucking japanese. I can never take them seriously sometimes...
>>
>>15615726
Not him but
So if it's controlling a robot it would be 100% /m/ in your definition?
There's the industrial/futuristic theme in general, with a large chunk of the designs going to said theme or mashing it up with other areas.
What would be considered "the main villain faction" is pretty much /m/ with their design of being constructors, creating the robots that are an occuring enemy along with themselves, utilising said machines through bipedal robots to stationary artillery platforms that are robotic in design to quadraped drones.
You got drones which pretty much become a equippable weapon who's design is the result of adapting to the enviroment.
Only problem is the PCs being alien, and the only robot outside of drones you can use is summoning a bipedal enemy as an AI ally freely. So then that discredits it as true /m/, right?

>>
>>15616760

>>
>>15616643
The GOG version doesn't have the roar button. Also, no matter how many patches you apply, the game becomes more and more unplayable as you reach its ending. Because of the wrapper used (Nglide, I think?) there are tons of memory leaks in later stages, specially the sewer boss. Nothing you can do to remedy that.
The first stages work like a charm, though.

Also, no one beta-tested the final boss. It's fucking impossible to defeat it without the cluster missiles.

I'm sure many people know about Ghost in the Shell PS1 game where you ride the Fuchikoma all the time, but less known is PSP version based on SAC anime and that one is pretty fun.
Its main gameplay is first-person shooter but you get to bring a Tachikoma that follows you around. You get to choose between komas with different personality and customizing their loadout. But the best part is that most of the time you can get inside the Tachikoma and control it directly.
It run perfectly well in PPSSPP with dual analog control possible with right setup and there's even a patch that allow it to run in 60 fps.

I met the creator of this game by chance once when I worked in a store a long time ago. He paid for something by credit card and I recognized his name, asked if he made OMF2097. He was surprised I knew the game and connected the names. Considering the number of times I had seen the name in the credits it wasn't that surprising to me!

John Romero couldn't even transliterate kanji correctly. The correct reading/pronunciation should be "daitou".

Other games: the old Infocom Battletech games were fun-ish, but hard as balls.

Stellar 7 and Nova 9 are pretty fantastic distant future mechatank games.

The PC Battlezone games are second to none (fighting the USSR on the moon in the 1960s during the secret "actual" Cold War for Moon Metal because we never told anyone that we landed on the moon and all the other planets and had to fight a space war with the USSR)

I also remember this one semi-lewd J-game from the 90s called Metal and Lace: Battle of the Robo Babes. It was Japanese and you beat up mecha ploted by waifus until their clothes and parts fell off or something. There were a few references to stuff. There was a PC Engine sequel.

>I'm finding nothing.
There's a Starsiege/Tribes/Halo website called "the Junkyard", it used to have a bunch of files, including some of the stuff cut from the RealArcade version.
IIRC, someone even had the KR/retail version, IDK if it was ever dumped.

I think there's a couple YouTube videos with DL links.

You can try the Lost Heroes games, if you don't mind that it also features Ultraman and Kamen Rider

I first played W and Wars before the mod to make older games benefit from the N3DS even released but it's not that big of an issue most of the times.

Wars runs fairly smooth mostly.

IF you're wanting to make as much money as possible, then ditch the mecha aesthetic entirely. It's always going to be a very niche medium that requires a disproportionate amount of time and effort to make decent, let alone popular.

If your goal is a customizable shooter arena deal, then do something somewhat unique with it. Waifufaggotry is the easy out, but I myself would like to see something dieselpunky ala Crimson Skies.

I only knew him from his forum back when he was attempting to make OMF 2 which later became Battlegrounds. It's a shame he didn't have a real budget or development team to make something worthwhile out of it. It was way too ambitious of a project for what was practically just one guy.

I often wonder what would have happened if he had waited a decade and gotten onto the Kickstarter train instead of trying to do things solo. I don't think he has any interest on reviving it today after Battlegrounds went so sour.

Speaking of D&D inspired stuff from Romero, I like Quake and all but sometimes I wish we had gotten the gothic fantasy adventure game Romero wanted to make.

Anyone who's played Armored Core: Project Phantasma, is it worth getting if I've already played the first one?

How many new parts are there?
Any changes to the gameplay?
Analogue stick support?

I have some extra money in the wallet of my Singapore PSN account(for Gundam Breaker 3) and there's a Japanese version of it that I can afford, would it be much of an issue to play the Japanese version? From what I remember most of the menu options have pictures that'd make things easy to navigate.

Analogue stick support doesn't come until AC3 series. AC1 and 2 series are still really good in their own ways, I'd give it a shot.

Yup. AC2, AC2 Another Age, AC3, AC3 Silent Line. None have analog stick support.

If you want a good mecha game, check out HAWKEN. The only option is to be in them you can't exit or anything , but it's a cool fps that you should try out
