They're continuing the themes of Shin Godzilla but having a design similar to Freedomzilla because they're appealing to the foreign market.

To recap all the relevant information we have so far:

>2 contrasting Alien species with advanced technology and humans .Vs Godzilla
>Godzila's rampage. Human population reduced to about 1/100th
>Pre 20k Godzilla's rampage was slowed down by trapping him beyond the Himalayas. Only lasted for a year.
>Godzilla first appeared in America and chased humanity all the way to Japan
>The exodus to space was carried out by a utilitarian AI system. Not everyone got to leave.
>Every organic creature on earth has G cells even the plants
>Mechagodzilla city?
>Plenty of mecha overall
>Kaiju that were namedropped so far are Anguirus, Rodan, Dogora, Dagahra, Orga, Hedorah and Kamakiras
>It's taking inspiration and elements from most Godzilla films but thematically it's linked by '54 and Shin

Eh. Disappointing. Was hoping for something more original. Looks too similar to the Legendary design. We'll be getting enough of him over the next few years. Gentlemen, I wish to (autistically) propose the strongest Godzilla possible using this new, larger, and more powerful Anime Godzilla as a basis.
First let's look at this new Godzilla. Said to be the largest of them all, taller than Shin who stands at 389 feet tall. Of course we're not given an exact number yet but considering how massive they probably want Godzilla to be let's be bold at say it's going to be at least 500 feet tall. This actually doesn't mean much for now but keep that in mind for later.
Now we don't have many hard facts on Godzilla's destructive power, mostly just visual things such as him melting electrical towers, blowing holes in buildings, lifting Kaiser Ghidorah, blasting him into Space and surviving City Busting Meteors and Black Holes. So let's move onto the fun stuff.
First addition to the behemoth 500+ foot Godzilla. Super Godzilla from the SNES game, and oh boy is he stronger than you think. Given his Health before and after it's safe to say Godzilla is 50% more durable than 'City Busting Meteor means nothing' and actually calculating the damage between Normal and Super G's Atomic breath (then rounding down to account for variables) it's 2.3 times as powerful as his normal one. Given he can vaporize Kaiser Ghi in base form, we'll say he can Vaporize 2 Kaiser Ghis.
NOW let's make him Burning/Meltdown Godzilla. No hard numbers here, but let's just say everything is bumped up some more, maybe another 2 times. He could now just vaporize 4 Kaiser Ghidoras or Monsters of it's level.
>>
>>15611720
NOW let's say Hell opens up, hell bats Fly out, Consume Super Burning 500 Ft Godzilla's flesh and becomes one with him like in Godzilla in Hell. This is where things get seriously fun/scary. Each of the bats can fire Atomic breaths, which resulted in him firing an Atomic Blast the SIZE OF GODZILLA. Our 500 ft Abomination just fired a 500ft Atomic Blast. Considering his basis of American Godzilla this puts him at 7 heads tall, 6 heads wide. Meaning the blast is 7x Taller, and 6x Wider than normal. But that's scaled to American Godzilla who isn't 500ft. So sizing him up he'd probably be 9-10 Heads Tall and 8-9 wide, but we'll low ball to give Creation a chance 9 by 8. Multiply that and we get 72, which means that 500f Tall Super Burning/Meltdown Hellbat Godzilla can in fact destroy 288 Kaiser Ghidoras, or equal/lesser Kaiju. In one blast. Which means that this creation could now go on a rampage in a city of Kaiju as if he was 54 Godizlla in Tokyo.
This is assuming Anime Godzilla is only 500 ft and not even more

Heisei Godzilla is the definitive look of the character. And Godzilla vs Biollante is apparently Japan's favorite Godzilla film.

Reminder: Godzilla 2014, financially speaking, performed like a Millennium film. That era wasn't exactly the strongest box office wise for the series.
>>
>>15612981
Heisei and Legendary Godzilla designs are the strongest and most fitting designs for the character, but for different reasons.

Heisei is most marketable and mostly used in merchandising.
Legendary is the "Believable" design that oozes charm due to it being able to pull of a intimidating appearance one moment then can be used for something cute.

Point is, if you want a successful Godzilla design, make it "Bulky" and have features of dogs and bears in it's face.

Vs King Ghidorah, compared to the other Heisei flicks, has the most fun with itself. But that doesn't excuse the messy narrative, poorly handled WWII section, and very noticeable decline in the quality of special effects. As a complete film it's a step down from its predecessor. Yet sadly it was only the beginning.
>>

Remember Godzilla has been growing for 20K years, even that 500 feet is extremely low balling it

>>
>>15620682
vs. Destoroyah is one of the better Godzilla movies though.
>>
>>15620682
Godzilla vs Biollante was a financial disappointment. Which killed the artistic ambition of the filmmakers. Remember. Toho wasn't satisfied with the performance of Return of Godzilla five years earlier and now its sequel fared even worse. So they put less effort into the films and depended on nostalgia (King Ghidorah, Mothra, and MechGodzilla). And it worked.

>>15620735
Nah. It's just as lackluster as its immediate predecessors. Suffering from many of the same problems like dull characters, poor special effects, and lazy film-making. People just get tricked by its emotional final twenty minutes.

Only newcomers to comics think they are doing anything different.
>>
>>15620682

This: >>15620748, and also, Toho lost the American market beginning with Biollante, so they shifted strategy to pandering to their homegrown audiences with minimal effort, and lazily copying elements from whichever Western movie was popular at the time. Because that was less risky than originality.

>"Godzilla was born of nuclear power, and in that social environment Godzilla (1954) appeared.

Shin was about 3/11, it's a recreation of '54. An authentic Godzilla for the modern age. It wouldn't be the same without 3/11 just like '54 wouldn't be the same without Japan getting nuked.

About the fact that Godzilla shouldn't have emotions, Urobuchi remarked the same thing how later movies gave him a personality, he became more of a "character" and less of a concept.
In my opinion this is why GMK and Shin are good. They nail the classic portrayal of Godzilla down.

Not sure if this was translated, but here's an interview with Urobuchi about Godzilla, it shows his views about the franchise and Shin in particular:

SoG and MechaGodzilla are well thought of. Sea Monster is underrated. Megalon is genuinely terrible, though some fans get ironic appreciation out of it. And Gigan has the ambition of a Golden Age film without the budget.

Here's what Honda said in response to whether or not he think's Gojira should have ever had sequels:

"Godzilla was a product of the times. There previously had been no monster like him. So, people were frightened, and shocked, by him. Now, when Godzilla appears in a city, most of the buildings are even taller than he is!

The image of what a monster is shouldn't stay the same. It should be different so that people will be shocked and surprised, just as they were by GODZILLA - KING OF THE MONSTERS in 1954. Something new, and strange, must be created."

As I recall, there's a shot before that of the frozen Godzilla where the tail creatures can't be seen. Maybe it's an editing error, or maybe they didn't want to spoil the creatures before the ending so they left them out on purpose. Or perhaps they started climbing out of Godzilla after he had been frozen but the "cooling effect" hit them before they could make it.

Toho did the same for the Millennium films. Godzilla 2000 and GxM weren't as profitable as they would have liked. This led to Varan and Anguirus getting replaced by the namesakes of GMK. Kaneko was against the changes to his script. But obviously he was in no position to resist. GMK was the most successful entry of that era and like clockwork Toho revived MechaGodzilla for the next two films. So the previous few decades have been coasting on the nostalgia of the Showa Era.

Godzilla is turned OP to a ridiculous degree, he manages to kill 100 million jap by himself. Humanity couldn't beat him with all the nukes they had in 2030, this is with the additional help of advanced aliens and their technology.

He's still organic so it's possible he could be killed with nukes.

Anyways, the timeline we have doesn't mention nuking Godzilla. What it says is that they used about 2000 thermonuclear bombs to create a giant chasm (1km wide, 800m in depth, 10,0000km in height) in the Himalayan transform boundary, effectively trapping Godzilla between the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate.
This managed to slow him down for one year before he blasted one part of the Himalayan mountains with his atomic breath and then continued on with his rampage.

This is Godzilla on Kaiju steroids. It's the work of an absolute madman.

The market for kaiju films were shrinking with each installment by this point. Especially children. So this was Toho's desperate attempt to regain the younger audiences. Godzilla (1998) really hurt the franchise. Look at the attendance numbers before and after its release.

People also need to remember that most of the Godzilla films released in the 70s were made for children (Champion Festival) and with less than half the budget the ones before them had. Doesn't excuse all of their flaws, however, context is important to take into account.
>>
>>15633611
>Godzilla (1998) really hurt the franchise. Look at the attendance numbers before and after its release.
I don't think its fair to blame 1998, man. The audience lost interest because the new Godzilla films were cheap and didn't bring anything new to the table, with a few exceptions of course.
>>
>>15633870
It wasn't Godzilla (1998) by itself. But I think it's fair to call it a major factor. The market was getting oversaturated (Gamera Trilogy, Mothra Trilogy, Heisei Godzilla, Ultraman, etc) and on top of all this Sony throws this massive, poorly received film.

My poor translation attempt:

■[1] 05-1999 United States, New York-Boston area witnessed the appearance of the first of the giant organisms [Kaiju] named: Kamacuras. Estimated number of casualties: 2.5 million people.
It appeared suddenly out of the sea from the upper New York bay area. In 72 hours upon landing, it moved 330 kilometers northeast, destroying every area in its path. In retaliation, the Air Force used laser guided underground piercing bombs [Bunker Busters] against it.
※ The leading theory to explain the appearance of the Kaiju is the sudden change in the global environment.

■[2] 09-2002 United Kingdom, London-Manchester. The appearance of the Kaiju Dogora. Estimated number of casualties: 3.9 million people.

■[3] 11-2005 People's Republic of China, Tianjin-Beijing. The appearance of the Kaiju Rodan and Anguirus. Estimated number of casualties: 8.2 million people.
※ The tactical use of the biological weapon [Hedorah] was a success. The entire area of Hebei suffered an outbreak of pollution damage.

■[4] 12-2017 Australia, Sidney-Newcastle. The appearance of the Kaiju Dagahra. Estimated number of casualties: 6.7 million people.
※ Unidentified substance discharged from within the Kaiju's body caused wide bacterial infections. It continued spreading across Australia's east coast.

■[5] 05-2022 Turkey, Izmir-Ankara. The appearance of the Kaiju Orga. Estimated number of casualties: 1.15 million people.

■[6] 2030 United States, West Coast area. The appearance of a Kaiju different than all the others. The Kaiju Godzilla. Estimated number of casualties: 8.7 million people/Percentage of surviving humans:56%/World population estimate:2.3 billion people.
Los Angeles-San Francisco completely destroyed. Enormous damage incomparable to that of past Kaiju attacks took place.
※ 3 distinct Kaiju appeared simultaneously and were all annihilated by Godzilla.

■[7] 2034 Western Europe destroyed by Godzilla. An all out attack by the EU allied forces failed.
Estimated number of casualties: 6 million people/Percentage of surviving humans:30%/World population estimate:2 billion people.
Paris, the capital of France fell. The whole of Europe is evacuated.

■2035 The alien race [Bilsard] landed in London.

■2036 The alien race [Exif] landed in New York.

■[8] 2039 Humans, Bilsard and Exif established the Earth union. With the help of the Bilsard and Exif, science and technology has advanced. Operation [Eternal Light] to recover Europe was successful.
Although the mass production and development of Kaiju weapons has accelerated. An effective plan for stopping Godzilla remains to be found.

■[9] 2042 Godzilla activity confirmed (Number of occurrences 8).
Kaiju Godzilla. Estimated number of casualties: 300 million people/Percentage of surviving humans:19%/World population estimate:1.2 billion people.
Living space disappearing: 50% of the whole East Coast of the United States, Northern Africa, Eurasian continent

Project team establishment:
Selective immigration plan started. Construction began of an interstellar immigration ship.
Temporary central government function moved to the outskirts of Rio De Janeiro.

■[10] 2045 Operation [Great Wall] to confine Godzilla in the Eurasian continent is implemented. The transform boundary between the Himalayan mountain range and the Eurasian continent was destroyed using 2000 thermonuclear bombs. It resulted in the formation of a giant fault zone of 1km in width, 800m in depth and 10,000km in height. This succeeded in ceasing Godzila's advance for 1 year.

■[11] January-2046 Godzilla breaks through India's line of defense
Kaiju Godzilla. Estimated number of casualties: 200 million people/Percentage of surviving humans:13%/World population estimate:800 million people.

>Is this Godzilla anime trilogy going to be a serious theatrical release in Japan with heavy promotion and the like? Or will it be a limited release.

We don't know yet. It will depend on how many theaters it gets screened across. Mainstream anime movies start around 300 screens, ones aimed at children can exceed that.
I'm guessing for Godzilla, it will be around 150 screens, that's around the level of popular otaku-centric anime movies.

>And was the decision for the films to head straight to Netflix for foreign markets based on Shin Godzilla's international performance?

Shin didn't do THAT great and it's common knowledge for japs that westerners didn't care for Shin that much.
I think that decision came about because the producers believe that the movie has elements that could appeal to the international market.

I know Shin earned like 95% of its worldwide gross domestically, which is why I asked did that influence the decision to use Netflix this time. But remember it had a very limited release and minimal promotion. Funimation was so pleased with its performance that it extended its showing from a week to over a month. Relatively speaking, it did well for itself.

And Western critics didn't call it a masterpiece like the Japanese did, though the overall response was positive. The average scored was like 7/10. Only counting the Godzilla films with enough legitimate reviews, its the second highest rated film in the series behind only Gojira of course.
>>
I, for one, welcome our ridiculously bullshit overpowered Godzilla. If the timeline for this film is any indication of how batshit fucking crazy things will get, then count me in. Anime Godzilla started production when Shin Godzilla was in the conception stage. Urobuchi even read the script of the movie. Shin and Anigodzi have the same producer and my guess is that he was aiming for different audiences for each project.

I think the Netflix thing came about because they really think they can sell it to an international audience. It's probably something they planned since Day 1.

Shin's influence will be felt for Toho's next live action Godzilla movie, if they go with a legitimate publisher this time and not Funimation it will prove that they trust a Toho Godzilla movie can make money overseas.
>>
>>15643106
Exactly, that's what I want animated Godzilla media to do is go where the live action films cannot go or would not make sense to go. Goofy superhero live action Godzilla is always there... But Toho won't do that I feel. So I agree with you on that token. Unique shit is always welcome to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though didn't the wife want to leave the city ahead of time and the protagonist tell her to wait for him instead?

yes

Sorry, are you talking about the new western Godzilla?

I haven't seen it yet, so that's not what I was referring to. Sorry if it seemed like I was criticizing it. I was thinking more of random other the disaster/emergency/outbreak movies like San Andreas, Independence Day, etc. where the person ignores whatever other duties or responsibilities they might have.
>>
>>15644874
Well you hit the nail on the head anyway, its generic soldier boy protagonist spends the whole fucking movie stumbling around yelling about his family.

And >>15644789 is right, the fucker's family is in danger only because he tells them to not evacuate from a city that THREE GIANT FUCKING MONSTERS AND A NUCLEAR BOMB are heading to

This. Godzilla (2014) has no characters after the title character makes his initial appearance. Ford Brody has no significant thoughts or personality. He has no one interesting to engage with after his father dies and all of the other characters become irrelevant early on. We don't spend enough time with them or learn enough about them to truly care. Watanabe was the only one to leave an impression.

The movie itself felt so bland and lifeless. Only thing I can really compliment is the cinematography. The score is forgettable at best. And the movie is too long. It falls flat in the second act. Even in the climax it continues to cut away from the spectacle. By time we reach the "kiss of death" it's too little, too late.

Edwards doesn't know what to do with Godzilla. He keeps repeating the introduction trick and we never spend much time with the monster. Heck, removing Godzilla wouldn't change much of anything.
>>
>>15644894
He spends most of the movie not saying a lot, and generally making progressively more dangerous choices that put him further from his wife and kid. Though they try to develop him when he saves the Asian boy. Tried and failed, the movie has zero character development despite being heavy on following people. He's generic, but not disgustingly cliche.

Watanabe did fuck all in it. He just stared and mouth breathed at some marks in filming and said "Let them fight."

To be honest, writing a perfect script for a Godzilla movie is pretty damn difficult, if not impossible.

In order for it to have any mainstream appeal, it would need a relatable protagonist. A lot of people complained about Cranston's character getting killed off, but that was probably the producer's call. You can't have an old man be the main character in a summer blockbuster. It's not good for sales.
Another thing it needs is an emotional backstory and motivation, it had to be muh family, because a couch potato wouldn't understand "duty" or some other motivation. It needed to be more personal for our main character. There lies the problem, having a personal motivation against an impersonal phenomenon. That's like wanting vengeance against an earthquake. It's an interesting concept, but not for a shallow summer blockbuster.

Those elements are essential for a drama, which is what Godzilla 2014 went for. It failed however because Godzilla is also the protagonist, he's by far the most popular character. People expect the movie to be about him, which is impossible. It needs to be about a main character that we care about and also be about Godzilla. This balance is the hardest to pull off and is the main failing not just for Gozilla 2014 but other films in the series.

This seems like a bad attempt to cash in on the Terraformars audience.

Might watch if Jet Jaguar shows up.

>cast Samuel L. Jackson or Denzel Washington as the lead
>He's the President of Earth
>His son is a Major in the United Nations of Earth Super Peace Keeping Service and one of the first casualties of Godzilla
>This time... it's personal

Too patriotic even if ironic, it will scare off the international market. Especially our good friends in china.

Would still watch though.

>It needs to be about a main character that we care about and also be about Godzilla.
This is why I don't entirely agree with the "if capeshit can become popular and mainstream, so can Godzilla" argument that I commonly see other people make. In superhero movies, the main attraction and the main character are usually one and the same, they're often played by easily marketable actors, and it's much more simple to write personal conflicts around them. Godzilla is a different matter, and just because one outlandish niche subject has made a surprisingly successful shift to the mainstream, it doesn't mean that another can do it the same way.

This. Cranston was as much of a selling point as Godzilla himself. If you're going to take him out early, at least put someone worth our time.
>>
>>15645730
Superheroes are made easy to relate with, the element of escapism is pretty big.
With giant monsters, the easiest route to take is to create a big spectacle. Which is what they're doing, movies have no humanity or new memorable characters to them, the milking might not stay forever but it makes good money now.

At least it's not the Dark universe. That shit needs a miracle writer to pull-off.

>>15645750
You have to understand, movies are made with the intention to market them for an international audience. The producers also want the biggest reach in demographic possible, to them it probably was the safest bet.

What is the worst monster fanbase and why is it Baganfags?
>>
>>15645235

Just adapt Half-Century War. If you trimmed some of the fat and made both the story and fights more focused, you could easily fit it into a 2 hour movie. You get a solid main character and equally solid side characters, with a relatable story coupled with lots of monster action.

Perfection achieved. Where's my Hollywood millions?

The movie starts 20,000 years after they've appeared. Who knows what happened to them by now. If they're still alive, then they most likely have been taken over by G cells.
It's a trilogy so we might actually see them do something if they appeared.

Pic is German, so everything's Kino by definition. But most of those films aren't that great. At least it's got the original and GMK, so that counts for something I guess.
