I think it wouldn't have had the reputation it has if it had actually been completed as a trilogy as intended. As it stands, it's a terrible ending to Nadesico because the movie feels like an extra long pilot episode for a new season. Lots of characters get shafted in screentime and don't actually get to do anything because a lot of the movie is just Ruri recruiting them back, things like who is Lapis don't get a chance to be explained, and the movie ends leaving without Akito seeing his wife he worked so hard to rescue.

It spends like an hour doing fuck all aside from Ruri's vacation, then goes OH SHIT, WE FORGOT THE PLOT and wraps it all up in like 10 minutes.

I love the movie. Probably helps that I disliked the TV series quite a bit. Akito was insufferablely whiny even by mecha pilot standards, Yurika is a pretty disgusting female character and the tone was all over the damn place.

The movie made Akito a badass, made the best character the lead, put Yurika on a bus and had some awesome mecha.
