I like most Emperor and Kaiser designs, honestly all Mazinger designs are pretty good. I just think, as you said, great and Grendizer are aesthetically less pleasing and the bottom of the barrel in designs. I think Grendizer is alright, even though I HATE ufo mode, but to be Great is the single worst Mazinger design because it took the original and made it boring while claiming to be "better".

The two just seem so dull and less unique than Mazinger.

Mazinger Z is my favorite as well. I think the head design has a lot to do with it. As far as the anime goes, it's fun to watch Koji be an asshole and a lot of the early weirdness of Z makes it more entertaining to me than the others overall.

Grendizer isn't a Mazinger in the literal sense but it's paired together with the Mazingers and the most recognized along with them, with Super Robot Girls Z officially making them a trio of sorts.

Govarian may have some similar facial features but it lacks what overall makes a Mazinger which is general body shape, pilder, access to the set of attacks (rust hurricane, breast fire, and rocket punch), exist in the same universe/tied together universes as Mazinger, and general color scheme. Grendizer may lack a pilder but not only does it have the other features, Grendizer Giga gave it a pilder.

A lot of mecha anime particularly older shows are garbage.

Aside from the original series the Macross franchise is really fucking lame and self indulgent. II (ironically) came close to being good, Plus was uninspired melodrama, 7 was garbage with some good tunes, Zero was the biggest waste of time ever, Frontier was a shitty retread of the original, and Delta is just an unholy turd.

Oh, and the fanbase is literally the worst fanbase of all time. EASILY.

I have opinions.

Macross 7 is total garbage in every way without a single redeeming feature. Macross birdman was alright and had some of the best mecha designs.

Mazinger and Getter are ugly designs and modern edgy re-interpretations are massive improvements over the originals.

The O and Qubeley are both ugly as fuck. All of Scirroco's designs are ugly too.

They both pandered shamelessly but I feel that Delta really pushed it. I know this is weird to say since I know that May'n went on to be a huge success after frontier, but Delta just really felt like a bigger cash in.
A lot of characters in Delta are just there without any purpose, and this is discounting the idols.
The antagonists weren't properly developed outside of two characters and I felt that they were just making everything "bigger and better" because Frontier did it.
Also the conflict is supposed to be something that will change the fate of the galaxy, but it feels so unimportant, and I know the NUNS could give less of a shit about backwater planets, but still they could've done something else to make it seem like there were high stakes.
Delta would've worked better with a smaller cast and a less grand conflict.

iirc early comments said that the show would be about competing companies and I thought "wow, that's perfect for macross" it could've been a story that properly expanded on a facet of the universe that hasn't been explored as much instead of raising questions.

Unpopular opinion time: I think this massive facade of detached, petty and even angry apathy towards things is kind of the most insane gimmicks this website and the internet at large has taken on and it's just exhausting at this point. People can unironicly enjoy a thing or be enthusiastic about it without a people having fits and having to try to explain away enjoying things as 'clearly they're forcing themselves to like a thing that I don't.' 2.Viewership is concentrated around gundam among online anime fans for wrong reasons (I watch it for politics and things that has no relevance to mecha itself). There is no way this crowd of watching "mecha anime which are not technically mecha anime" is going to die out.l
