Titan comics is releasing the new robotech line with a cosplay variant cover
>>
A cover is made by DA artist Artgerm.

Release date is july 26
>>
Robotech should die

Plus, a "cosplay cover" for a comic is a shitty idea
>>
>>15593980
why is Robotech still a thing?
>>
>>15593995
That's like always a cosplay variant for the comics that gets variant covers.

>>15593996
because nostalgia and being superior to macross
>>
>>15594002

>REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Will Macross fags ever stop being such fucking cry babies
>>
>>15593996
Because Harmony Gold likes making money off of misguided nostalgia.
>>
>>15594057

Well, unlike Robotech fags, we have to resort to expensive imports or pirate torrents to enjoy what we like, despise living in the era of legal streaming. And that's a pretty good reason to complain.

And there is no bigger crybabies that people complaining about other people complaining

All three Robotech shows have been given uncut releases multiple times. Macross even has an uncut english dub featuring Minmay's seiyuu reprising her role. They even released Love Live Alive uncut and subtitled.

Harmony Gold isn't holding up the release of later series. First problem is the insanely licensing high fees. HG is an issue, and they'd be sure to try and block it if a company other than themselves tried to release it now, but Manga representative Keith Burgess stated at Anime Central 2004 that "It would take all the anime companies working together to be able to afford to bring the series (Macross 7) over to America" because they apparently tried to negotiate for it after releasing II and Plus. Russia seems to be the only country that has a release for Macross 7 outside of Japan. As far as I can tell anyway.

The other biggest issue blocking releases of other Macross shows is vague wording in a contract that neither side wants to budge on. HG's contract simply says "The Macross TV series" which is plural, non-specific, and incredibly vague even for it's time. If HG had the materials for these shows they'd likely be on DVD by now. HG hasn't been stingy or defensive about releasing these shows uncut like 4kids was. 4kids cancelled a successful set of uncut DVDs with no reasoning or warning, HG at least has allowed Macross to receive multiple uncut sets.

HG is total dicks for sure but the release of shows it the one area you can't blame on them. Big West and Tatsunoko are holding up anime because the fees are high, and they won't just let HG have the materials.
>>
We already have the original and Plus.

To be totally honest with you, Japan can keep everything else.

Except maybe an official western release of DYRL would be nice.
>>
>>15594721
seriously that's "omg I have had it up to HERE with Debbie and her bullshit"
>>
>>15594818
a thousand years ago when AnimEigo got SDFM they said they tried to get DYRL but Company A said Company B had the rights and Company B said Company A had the rights so they were stuck
this was before the big Macross lawsuit in Japan iirc

Speak for yourself, I'd love to be able to buy the fucking videogames without hassle.
Not to mention an unfucked live action Macross would be great. If Cowboy Beepboop can get a damn TV adaptation, I just know someone would bankroll a Macross adaptation, but the fucking kikes at HG continue to shit everything up.
>>

You're right. I wasn't really thinking about broader media.
>>
>>15595010
I don't see the appeal of a live action movie they're always fucking trash and inferior. Why would you want one? You'll gain nothing from it.
>>
>>15595010
speaking of games and Bebop did the dubbed version of the PS2 game ever leak?
>>
Pardon my newness but I can't remember whether I watched macross or robotech and this thread has me confused. What were the specific differences? Also if anyone has amazon prime they have 'macross' for streaming. Is that the pure version?
>>
>>15595052
The key difference is that protocol changes and they tack on forshadowing about the Robotech Masters. That's really it. Everything else remains the same. Well except names and terminology but even quite a few of those are the same.
>>
>>15595066
also Robotech kills off a fuckton of named characters off-screen-ish at the end of the Macross story
>>
>>15595066
Thank you. I did my own research too. I was confused because I never saw robotech season 2 & 3 which to my understanding are entirely different animes. To me robotech/macross is the story of the SDF 1, min may and hikari (rick) etc. Reading the history of harmony gold stitching three shows sounds like a shit show.
>>
>>15595032
>they're always fucking trash
The live-action Rurouni Kenshin trilogy starring Ryotaro Nogami would beg to differ.
>>15595052
Robotech was a redubbing of Macross, Southern Cross, and MOSPEADA, with changes to make all three of them linked and set in the same universe. Amazon Prime has the original version of Macross, but I hear the video quality's kinda shitty.

It is. There's no real reason in watching Robotech today, honestly, outside of historical significance as one of the series that helped popularize anime in North America. The novels are legitimately good reads though- well worth a look.

>>15595010
Did the script or more concept art from the canned 1992 movie ever leak? I know the treatment did.
>>
>>15595032
The appeal is seeing big budget effects mixed with Macross. If there's one thing Hollywood has over Nippon is that they can actually make a live action movie that doesn't have painfully bad acting and CG.

You do realize it's not HG keeping macross over right? It's combination of song rights and NOBODY GIVING A FUCK!

>nobody giving a fuck
Kawamori literally said that he'd help with a Robotech live action if they'd let him.
>>
>>15595162
No, it's HG too. While it's largely because of music rights, it's also because Harmony Gold has done some real shady, underhanded shit. They've trademarked the term 'Macross', 'UN Spacy', and the UN Spacy logo in multiple countries after Big West and Studio Nue stopped playing ball with them. Harmony Gold is a sleazy as fuck company, which is part of why we don't get even get the Macross manga over here. In fact, that's directly what killed Macross 7 TRASH getting brought over to the US during the anime and manga boom of the early '00s.

The music rights bullshit is a smokescreen, probably thought up by kevin mcQueefer. AKB0048 got licensed, and last time I checked akb are one of the biggest acts in japan. Much bigger than mayn or fire bomber ever were. Some marketing retard over at HG probably thinks he's being clever spreading the music rights disinfo to take some heat off hg and even bigger retards over here parrot it.

I got a chuckle out the lame attempts to meme their shitty new comic though.
>>
>>15595352
What a load of bullshit.
You know that this is the same planet where Kite got a Hollywood adaptation with Samuel L Jackson, right?
Obscurity won't mean jack shit to Hollywood when they're just using anime because they've run out of obscure capeshit to adapt.
>>
>>15595496
I hope they're being paid for this, defending HG for free is just too depressing to think about.
>>
>>15595510
Don't forget Cameron/Rodriguez's Battle Angel Alita adaptation, and Tom Cruises Edge of Tomorrow. Both of those were way more obscure than Macross, even in the general anime fan world.
Macross, I have no doubt would get an offer for a movie sooner or later. Its literally only HG being a bunch of greedy jews.

>Macross, I have no doubt would get an offer for a movie sooner or later

I doubt it. The whole fighting aliens with pop music thing is very, very japanese and would be a hard sell.

Battle angel only got an adaption because alita is, or was james camerons waifu. AYNIK got adapted because it's highly compatible with western audiences who love time loops, army shit and a good romance.
>>
>>15595519
They could do their own thing, like they did with Edge of Tomorrow, where they take the basic setting and characters, but adapt them to be more western, so less pop songs, and more VF's and superweapons.

Or they could just adapt Plus and make it into a standard AI gone rogue situation.
>>
>>15595519
is cameron /ourguy/
>>
>>15595526
There was a time I thought so but I'm sorely disappointed with what I'm seeing and hearing about the Alita movie. He handballed the directing part of the project to someone else implying he's not as passionate about the franchise as he used to be, the plot sounds terrible and drawn from the wrong part of the source material. The first promo poster had a super-cheesy tagline which doesn't bode well for the film either.

He's still writing the screenplay, and is the exec producer which implies he's still decently involved.
The man has to finish 4 Avatar movies by 2020, of course he doesn't have time to direct Alita, but I'm confident he cares enough about it to keep Rodriguez from screwing it up too bad.

>>
>>15595536
Involved yes, but not wear-a-custom-made-waifu-shirt-in-public involved. Not sure how to feel about the screenplay if he thinks going straight into motorball with yugo as her coach and the damascus blade as the macguffin is a good idea.

Star Trek: Beyond did it. And in a way more reminiscent of the "it's fucking magic/technobable deal with it" attitude to music that some of the macross series had than SDF's culture shock

>>
>>15595496
Nah, I can definitely believe music rights is a big hurdle too. While Fire Bomber and May-n aren't anywhere near the popularity of AKB, that's also probably why we wouldn't see it licensed. It's a niche series with fairly expensive music rights- AKB0048 can bounce off the fact weebs- namely idolfags- are more likely to be fans of the idol group. Macross is largely popular with mechafags and oldfags, who are an increasingly small group. For what it's worth, though, I feel like Macross Frontier most likely would've been licensed when it was airing had Harmony Gold not cockblocked it. That was extremely popular with anime fans in general.

Hell, didn't HG use Alto in one of the promo pics for their reissue of Robotech around that time? Surprised that didn't end up in court, since they legally don't have the rights to the character's likeness.
>>
>>15596719
I remember seeing Animerica cite the music rights cost rumors as the reason to not expect 7 in the USA legit even back when HG was asleep.
>>
>>15595643
Have you never watched Power Rangers? The out of suit action was always pretty strong. Especially in season 2 and 3 where it was better than the suit fights.
>>
>>15595496
Except HG has jackshit to do with the music rights thing. It was a CPM employee that stated the music was an issue because they wanted to license the show.
>>
>>15596771
>>15597070
It was a Manga employee.

>>
>>15597063
>The out of suit action was always pretty strong. Especially in season 2 and 3 where it was better than the suit fights.

That's really just comparing shit with piss.
>>
Wasn't there a Macross 7 dub in the works with Boston's Brad Delp as Basara with all new music?
>>
>>15597090
Nah. Power Rangers has a lot of flaws but it's out of suit action is pretty strong. Even to this day. Sentai's a better overall show but that doesn't mean Power Rangers doesn't do it's original footage well.
>>
>>15597099
Allegedly. I've never seen proof of it, so I doubt it was true.
>>
>>15597073
The rumor existed long before 2004. I recall seeing it around the late 90s in Animerica.
>>
>>15597073
Why would Macross 7 cost more than any other random series from that era? Genuinely curious.
>>
>>15597930
legends say the music has to be licensed separately from the music company and they want crazy money
like how Child's Toy didn't have the original OP and they just dropped the audio when it was in the show
>>

Isn't that also the reason why Zeta DVD releases got that orchestral OP instead of The Sign of Zeta?

>NOBODY GIVING A FUCK

Pic related is a brand new toy from Harmony Gold's recent Chinese toy partner, KidsLogic; a statue/diorama sound system. HG has been marketing it as a "Robotech" product, but KidsLogic has been selling it as "Macross" in toy expos and conventions everywhere.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHw_mOMCZn4&t=0s
At Toy Soul 2016, the woman showcasing it is dressed in the outfit Minmay wore in DYRL, and the diorama itself is even playing "Tenshi No Enogu" right out of the movie. You'll even notice that it doesn't even say Rick Hunter on the cockpit and instead is printed as Hikaru Ichijo instead. If you look closely in the video, the banner in the back doesn't even say "Robotech" at all, just "Macross". In fact, the only indication that this thing is Robotech is the tiny cuecard on the podium the toy sits on.

Also, Harmony Gold's entire merchandising line is nothing but Macross products with a huge wankery for valkyries, destroids, and the SDF-1, even some DYRL action figures and statues.

Clearly, the only 'fuck' nobody gives is Robotech, even the people marketing it.

I have no strong feelings either way about the whole Macross rights kerfuffle thing anymore, it's clear that nothing will ever change regarding its legal status and there hasn't been a decent Macross entry since 7. At this point all I want is a western BD release of SDF and I'd be happy.
